Three Muslims Indicted For Anti US Plots – In Ohio

I sure hope these innocents haven't been put through all of this trouble due to some damned illegal monitoring of their phone calls to Al Qaeda.

From the Detroit Free Press:

Left to Right: Mohammad Zaki Amawi, Marwan Othman El-Hindi, and Wassim Mazloum.

3 charged with plotting attacks

CLEVELAND — Three Muslim men from the Mideast were charged Tuesday with plotting attacks against U.S. and coalition troops in Iraq and other countries. One of the men also was accused of threatening to kill or injure President George W. Bush.

All three had lived in Toledo within the past year and were arrested last weekend — two of them in Toledo, the third in Jordan, authorities said.

They were charged with conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure people or damage property in a foreign country; conspiracy to kill Americans, and harboring or concealing terrorists. The charges could bring life in prison.

All three pleaded not guilty in federal courts in Cleveland and Toledo.

The federal indictment doesn't specify whether attacks were imminent but says the suspects recruited others as early as November 2004 to train for a holy war against the United States and its allies in Iraq. Two of the men discussed plans to practice setting off explosives on July 4, 2005, so that the bombs wouldn't be noticed, the indictment alleges.

The indictment says the group also traveled to a shooting range to practice and studied how to make explosives. It alleges that at least one of the men researched and tried to obtain government grants and private funding for the training.

Mohammad Zaki Amawi, 26, is accused of threatening in conversations to kill or injure Bush. Amawi, a citizen of the United States and Jordan, also is charged with distributing information about making and using bombs.

The others are Marwan Othman El-Hindi, 42, a U.S. citizen born in Jordan; and Wassim I. Mazloum, 24, who came to the United States from Lebanon in 2000.

El-Hindi's attorney, Steve Hartman, said the government was overzealous in bringing the charges. "It doesn't help that he's Jordanian," Hartman said.

El-Hindi is accused of trying to get a U.S. citizen with a military background to travel with him in 2004 to the Mideast as part of a plot to establish a terrorism training center. The indictment identifies the military person only as "the trainer."

Also, according to the indictment, El-Hindi met on or about April 4, 2005, with an accountant in Dearborn to create a nonprofit organization "that would receive grant funds, under the guise of providing tax education services."

Mazloum, who said he's an engineering student at the University of Toledo, operated a car business in Toledo with his brother. The indictment accuses him of offering to use the dealership as a cover for traveling to and from Iraq so that he could learn how to build small explosives using household materials.

An unidentified U.S. citizen with a military background helped the government foil the plot by working with the suspects while secretly gathering evidence, according to the indictment.

The report didn't mention whether their nonprofit 501c3 organization was approved by the IRS or not. But I suppose if Move On, Code Pink and Mother Sheehan are tax-exempt "charities," why not these guys?

Fair is fair.
