Time Shrieks: Palin Desecrated The Flag

Just when you thought they had reached the bottom, we have this from the aptly named ‘Swampland’ blog of the former news magazine known as Time:

Did Sarah Palin Disrespect the Stars and Stripes?

Posted by Amy Sullivan Monday, January 24, 2011

Swampland alum KT pointed out to a few of us this weekend something we’d missed in the already much-discussed Sarah Palin video that followed the Tucson shooting: the American flag placed behind Palin to add a presidential air to the recording is on the wrong side.

"To add a presidential air"? As far as we know, our current President is not all that keen on speaking in front of American flags.

Big deal, you say? Actually, yeah. The U.S. Flag code was passed by Congress nearly 70 years ago to provide exact rules for the use and display of the Stars and Stripes. One of the many rules dictates the positioning of the flag relative to a speaker:

When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium, the flag of the United States of America should hold the position of superior prominence, in advance of the audience, and in the position of honor at the clergyman’s or speaker’s right as he faces the audience.

Most sentient observers will have noticed that Mrs. Palin was speaking from a private residence and not a church or public auditorium. But we are talking about a ‘reporter’ for Time.

Google any politician’s official portrait and you’ll see that the flag is always to their right. I did this with Sarah Palin and was amused to find that even SNL’s famous Tina Fey skits have the flag on the right side of "Palin’s" podium.

How amusing.

This isn’t the first time Palin has run afoul of the U.S. Flag Code. She caused a mini-uproar last fall when she casually autographed a supporter’s American flag at a Tea Party rally. And of course there was the photo from Palin’s spread in Runner’s World, which had her leaning on a flag draped over a stool.

Will any of these flag infractions matter to Palin’s fans? Of course not. But maybe, just maybe, during the next campaign we could all be spared the ridiculous debates over doctored photos of Democrats putting the "wrong" hand over their heart while saluting the flag or uproar over whether Obama should wear a flag pin wherever he goes.

I know–fat chance. But a girl can dream.

How many photos of the American flag being trampled has Time magazine published over the years? How many burning flags have been displayed on its covers?

It would almost seem that as far as Time and the rest of the media and the rest of the left are concerned, it is practically a civil right to desecrate the American flag – if not an actual duty.

But we are supposed to suddenly believe that for Time the flag is sacrosanct. In fact, they are almost as respectful about it as their fellow propagandists at Newsweek:

But all is fair when you are smearing the Tea Party and Sarah Palin.

To Time and the Left – this part of the sentence is all that is needed on discussing Sarah Palin – she is so dumb, so inept that she does anything to ‘add a presidential air’ to her video, that she does not even know – she did her ‘add a presidential air’ wrong and that she is too stupid to even know the US Flag Code. Thus she never has been, is not nor ever will be a viable presidential candidate.

That is all that is important to Time to convey – at all. Ever.

They must be terrified indeed of Sarah Palin and all that she represents. The next two years will be interesting indeed.

I’m willing to trade Barack Obama with the flag on his right side for Sarah Palin with the flag on her left side.

Can we make the trade today? I’m ok with that.

  3. Moose Breath says:

This story could cause an anti-Palin backlash. What if some right-wing, extremist, flag-waving nut targets Sarah Palin as a result of this story? The media must be more careful. Everybody knows these extremists are fixated on the American flag.

Now more than ever, we need civility. The media must stop fanning the flames of hate.

By the way – wouldn’t one, couldn’t one ascertain from Sarah Palin’s placement of the flag – that she was indeed doing the correct thing – not implying (as Time did) that she is putting on presidential airs – but rather showing that she is just one of the people of the US – not a politico with or putting on presidential airs? Just a thought to consider – which Time would always do, if this was a Left celeb parsing and considering all possible interpretations just to deny their continual disregard for the US Flag code, putting on (intentionally) presidential airs and of course their usual modus operendi – lying.

Liberals terrifed of a woman that is not even a political official just an average PRIVATE citizen, WOW!!!!

Imam Barack Husein Obama refused to put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance, that is OK.

Imam Barack Husein Obama refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at all, that is OK.

Palin have flag in the left side AT PRIVATE HOME, that is worst?

I had seen Palin’s birth certificate, where is Obama’s? Why is he spending a million dollar on lawyers to “protect” and “defend” the release of such document? Why does a doctor in Kenya claims he has Obama’s birth certificate? Why is the media waiting for weakileaks to tell us about such doctor and Obama’s birth certificate?

  7. P. Aaron says:

They’re jealous because Sarah Palin is a hottie and all they got is Barbara Mikulski.

or uproar over whether Obama should wear a flag pin wherever he goes.

Translation: you pick on our weakling, we’ll show you!

I swear liberals are becoming more and more like children everyday. It’s like a playground and the liberals keep getting beat up and running to teacher to complain for getting punched after pulling Sally’s hair, when Sally didn’t share her toy and only pulled her hair because she thought it would be funny. And Sally is mean. It’s her fault! Wahhhhhhhhhhh!

As a result: I now talk to all liberals like children. :) Act petulant, get treated as such. Next I’ll start asking if it’s time for a nap, if their diaper is wet, or if they need a pacifier to chew on.

I refuse to acknowledge their jabs and jeers. It’s sad that we have to pay attention to it to any significant degree, but having witnessed a blogging meltdown on another subject, one can see how fruitless it is to suffer the slings and arrows of petulance and chicanery. In other words, it’s a huge waste of time. Sure, it’s fun to point out their lapses in logic and their reverence to “relativism” but, in reality, most conservative thinkers would rather be prevaricating about the Super Bowl or paying attention to their vocations, or their kids’ needs or getting dinner ready. Where Sarah put the flag is of no consequence. As a symbol, it was a pleasant reminder of what she stands for but since she’s not in any official capacity of government, having it in the background is absolutely fine. It matters not where it’s displayed other than, say, on the floor in a pile, as Time so frequently delights in showing us. Or on fire. It’s just another case of them holding us to our own standards while they happily ignore them, or any standards for that matter. But I have already wasted your time and mine by simply posting anything about it here.

  9. TerryAnne says:

Lol! (regarding your last sentence) Your posts are never time wasters. Anyone who likes Airplane is always worth listening to in my book! :)

You’re perfectly correct, though. I should have added that if a liberal sucks me into orbit and tries to debate me, I’ve taken to replying as I would to a child.

    • untrainable says:

TerryAnne, you found a liberal that wants to debate? Call Ripley’s. There could be some greenie reward for discovering a previously unknown species.
