‘Profiling’ Caused Chicago Olympic Loss

From Pakistan’s The Nation:

Harrowing security caused Chicago Olympic snub

October 06, 2009

KARACHI – The city of Chicago was denied the hosting rights of 2016 Olympic Games not because it was in any way inferior to other three cities in the race, but due to stringent security regime slapped after 9/11 in the USA, according to reports leaked to the media

Despite having the support of world’s most powerful ruler, Chicago, the front-runner in the race lost in the first voting only because the 98 members of the IOC were convinced that stringent security measures at USA airports would create unfathomable problems for third world countries

The moment that upset USA apple cart came during Chicago’s presentation when an IOC member from Pakistan, Syed Shahid Ali, noted that going through US customs can be harrowing for foreigners.

Obama responded that he wanted a Chicago games to offer “a reminder that America at its best is open to the world.”

It was Pakistan’s Syed Shahid Ali who drew the attention of the house to the difficulties that athletes and spectators would face in the USA. During the presentation Syed Shahid Ali noted that going through US Customs can be harrowing experience for foreigners. President Obama’s response to the comment that America was open to the world failed to convince Asian, African and Middle Eastern voters.

Even the French IOC member Guy Drut supported the view of the Pakistan representative of an excess of security. He had complained that he was barred from crossing the lobby of his hotel for security reasons. The city of Copenhagen was closed because of President Barack Obama’s presence

This is a new one. But it is the first explanation we have heard from an actual IOC member.

We suspect that Mr. Ali meant that some foreigners are subject to being profiled in the US.

“support of world’s most powerful ruler

    That’s great, freaking great.

  2. Colonel1961 says:

Score one for us, huh? If they really think our security is too tight, perhaps we’re doing something right!

(OK, I admit it, I’m in a really good mood today…)

Just when DingleBarry was opening up our soft “Southern” underbelly.

Would there have been a Jihadist event? Say like, “Hop, skip and Body parts toss?”

  3. proreason says:

That tight security won’t last for long. Wait till they throw the first set of CIA guys in jail.

  4. GTBurns says:

The Press blames everyone but those really involved. Like The City of Chicago itself with its rampant graft and corruption and Obama’s arrogant display at Copenhagen.

Obama thought that all he needed was a 4 hours when Tony Blair had to wine and dine the IOC for 4 days to get London 2012. That is a big problem I see with the President, he just does not seem to be putting the full energy into anything he does.

It is still funny with the Congress and White House in their control, the left still cannot get anything done.
