Trade Nominee Agrees To Pay His Taxes

From an un-fazed Associated Press:

Trade nominee Ron Kirk agrees to pay back taxes

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON – Ron Kirk, nominated as U.S. Trade Representative in the Obama administration, owes an estimated $10,000 in back taxes from earlier in the decade and has agreed to make his payments, the Senate Finance Committee said Monday.

The committee said the taxes arise from Kirk’s handling of speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, and for his deduction of the full cost of season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team…

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said Kirk was working to clear up "a few minor issues" uncovered by the committee and expressed confidence he would be confirmed.

Despite the error, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, issued a statement calling Kirk "the right person for this job," and said he would attempt to have the nomination moved through the panel quickly…

The committee said that last fall, Kirk amended his income tax return for 2006, paying an additional $2,188 in tax and $139 in interest after a notification from the Internal Revenue Service. The return was filed by a paid tax preparer, the panel added.

Wow, Mr. Obama is quickly becoming a one man IRS enforcement wing.

If he could only nominate a billion more people lifelong Democrats to various high-paying government positions, we could maybe put a dent in the debt he is running up.

Meanwhile, is somebody going to explain to the rest of us why we have to pay all of our taxes when we aren’t in line for a nice sinecure at the government trough?

Damn it, RB – that was my only bon mot!

    • Reality Bytes says:

Sorry Colonel. I guess that blows my chance of 4 wheel drifting your Ferrari, huh? Well, at least we’ll always have RBTini’s now won’t we.

Isn’t this nominee number 6 that hasn’t paid his taxes? Don’t make this into a racist, thing, it’s all races Obama’s chosen. This is what I’m trying to explain, what appears to me as a President and his buddies, wanting a communist type country. Hope there even is an election in 4 years, but of course we can not wait that long. If the states people don’t start pressuring their leaders that won’t be elected if they don’t stop this mania.

Thank god we now have an administration that is encouraging responsibility.

No hired flunky will go unpunished !!!

  4. pagar says:

If I were in the tax return preparation business, I think I’d take special care with Democrats who want their taxes done. Chances are, the info they provide the preparer are like the facts they pull out to claim things like a withholding table change is a tax cut.

  5. TwilightZoned says:

Awww…how nice he agreed to pay his taxes. WE just go to jail.

  6. Liberals Demise says:

I love how the pre-requisite for being on the OHole “A” Team is to be a C-R-I-M-I-N-A-L tax cheat and Bone Thug gangsta.
We are into the 2nd month and this is making the Clinton years look “sweet” in comparison.

I’m getting a BIG loathe on for this King Dick Obla Bla!!

    Agreed to pay his taxes???

    What a guy.

I sure hope everyone is paying attention so that when DuhOne raises everyones taxes SkyHigh that they have a choice as to paying them or not.

    • Colonel1961 says:

Precisely, 1st – I had no idea it was an ‘agreement’ – I thought it was the law…

    • 1sttofight says:

You know Colonel, I had a real close brush with death last April. I am not so sure I didn’t actually die and am now in Hell. I can not believe the US is in the shape it is now. It has to be a dream or actual Hell.

  8. pinandpuller says:

If I’m not mistaken you usually only go to jail for not FILING your taxes.

I thought that William Shatner had a lock on that name your own price thing?

  9. MinnesotaRush says:

Boy .. I may be going way out on a limb; but is anyone else seeing a ridiculous pattern with these o-blah-blah picks?!?!? Geeeeesh!!!

    • 1sttofight says:

Apparently I have been a real fool all these years, paying my taxes. I thought it was a law that you had to pay them, I didn’t know I could decide wheither to pay them or not.
I guess they covered that in Dem school which i have never been too.

What a world – in addition to all these tax CHEATERS…
in the states with income taxes if the governor (or governator) decides they spent too much of the taxpayers’ income tax and “can’t afford” to send the citizens THEIR OWN MONEY BACK – they simply tell the taxpayers “Too bad for you!.. we’ll pay you when we can AFFORD to”

what great government we’ve got, eh?

  11. catie says:

I guess the only upside though is now they have to pay their taxes so they can “help” the federal government even more. Remember Harry Reid said “tax system was voluntary”. I’ll remember this on April 15.

  12. canary says:

oOllah Obama can’t be so dumb as to not check on these criminals of government. Seems to be a life long pattern. oOllah lied to America about Bill Ayers just being a neighbor. oOllah Obama figures if his devoted people won’t mind someone who bombed America, and regrets not more bombing, that no one will care about these new criminals. So, why are all the other politicans, especially Republicans being so quiet?

  13. canary says:

“Income” taxes are only mandatory for gov employees, gov contractors, and residents of Washington, D.C. and any other “federal” territories. The rest of us have been deceived into thinking we must pay income tax, and coerced into paying them. It’s a long story. If you want the real truth, read this:

  14. proreason says:

Dick Morris says this about The Moron’s tax plans:

“We’re speaking, of course, of Obama’s plans to hike income taxes on the most wealthy 2 or 3 percent of the nation. He’s not just raising the top rate to 39.6 percent; he’s also disallowing about one-third of top earner’s deductions, whether for state and local taxes, charitable contributions or mortgage interest. This is an effective hike in their taxes by an average of about 20 percent.

And soon the next shoe will drop – he’ll announce that he’s keeping yet another of his campaign promises: to apply the full payroll tax to all income over $250,000 a year. (Right now, the 15.3 percent Social Security tax only applies to the first $106,800 of income – you neither pay the tax on income above that, nor accumulate added benefit.) For many taxpayers in this bracket, this hike will raise their total taxes by about half. ”

Dick’s predictions are not always perfect but he has some big hits recently.

(you might also note that I’ve been predicting taxes would go up by 25 to 100%. My prediction is over the next 5 to 10 years, and applies to the middle class….75K to 250K annual income, with higher increases at the top end than the bottom end. It is more likely low than high, imho. Although you may laugh, consider this….the trillions in new spending have to come from somewhere.)

    more from the same article…

“Here is a president who would rather redistribute income than create wealth. He thinks it more important to grow government than to fight inflation. He believes that it is crucial to expand health care to the young and middle aged, even if it means cutting it back for the elderly.”

    • Colonel1961 says:

Wages up to $106,800 ($102,000 last year) are subject to 12.4% Social Security withholding, and 2.9% Medicare withholding – a total of 15.3%. The Medicare withholding has no income limit; much like the Energizer Bunny – it keeps going, and going, and going…ridiculous. Those two ‘taxes’ (remember, they’re not deductible from your state income tax liability) should be more than enough to run the Gubmint. Heck, God only asked for ten percent…

  15. 1sttofight says:

If he took ALL the income of those making over $250k/yr it would not cover what he has already spent.
Where is the rest going to come from?

    • Liberals Demise says:

1st….if he rescends the child labor laws and puts little children to work from the cradle to the grave, we would still owe what he has given away.

  16. proreason says:

Interesting comment from Victor Davis Hansen in his blog today.

“Remember the very, very wealthy voted overwhelmingly in your favor precisely because their riches gave them immunity from high taxes, and in many cases they were far removed from the everyday risk and worry of owning a hardware store or trying to keep together a family-owned construction firm.”

“Those in great numbers who will pay your higher taxes are not really the rarer Warren Buffets, Bill Gateses, Diane Feinsteins, Teresa Heinz Kerrys, Sean Penns, George Soroses, Oprah Winfreys, or Tiger Woodses, whose mega-wealth really does result in private jet rides, and yet exempts them from worries that increased taxes might wreck their small businesses.”

  17. GL0120 says:

How dare you folks criticize TCO’s choices?
Can’t you see that these are people with the highest personal values in all of the world?
The instant that they’re nominated for a position they cough up the taxes that their paid preparers screwed the government out of. Do they wait until they have the office? NO! They pay up right away!
Do they ignore letters from the IRS? Okay, so they’re not perfect but as I said, nominate them and they come through.
How many of us would be so gallant, so forthcoming?
How many of us would rot in prison for the same offense?
