Bishop Tutu Wants “Hitler-Like” Israelis To Stop

From France’s AFP:

Tutu calls for immediate ceasefire in Middle East

CAPE TOWN (AFP) – South African Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu has called upon Israel and Lebanon to immediately cease hostilities, saying the conflict was "the best way to recruit suicide bombers."

"The very first thing is a ceasefire," the archbishop said Tuesday when asked about a solution to the bloody conflict which broke out in mid-July.

"We are just calling on our sisters and brothers there, for goodness sake, stop it," he told AFP on the sidelines of the launch of a global anti-blindness campaign in Cape Town.

The anti-apartheid stalwart, who turns 75 next month, said he regretted the extent to which Israel’s bombing of Lebanon was destroying infrastructure and innocent lives.

"It is one of the most distressing situations I’ve ever witnessed," he said.

"It is unacceptable. Nowhere can you ever be able to justify targeting civilians. In terms of morality, it is totally immoral."

Tutu urged Middle Eastern Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders to voice their outrage, saying neither of the warring countries would emerge victorious.

"If you say you are going to bomb … every single Lebanese, you will still not be the winner because you are going to leave somebody who remembers. It is the best way of recruiting suicide bombers."

Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his work in opposition of South Africa’s discriminatory racial policy, apartheid.

He chaired the country’s post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up to unearth past wrongs.

Tutu retired from office as Archbishop of Cape Town 10 years ago, and was named Archbishop Emeritus.

Yes, well Mr. Tutu is certainly a paragon of moral righteousness. He tells us often enough.

Never mind that he has compared Israel to Hitler and that he is a major supporter of the worldwide economic boycott of Israel.

Nobel Hypocrite

Asserting that "Israel is like Hitler and apartheid," Tutu urged his Boston listeners to oppose Israeli "injustices" as fervently as they once opposed Nazism and South Africa’s system of racial separation. "We live in a moral universe," said Tutu. "The apartheid government was very powerful, but today it no longer exists. Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Pinochet, Milosevic, and Idi Amin were all powerful, but in the end they bit the dust." How remarkable it is that he chose to compare Israel’s government to the regimes of such monsters, yet had no words of condemnation for his fellow Nobel Peace Prize recipient Yasser Arafat – the man single-handedly responsible for the murder of more Jews than anyone since Hitler.

Earlier the article points out that Tutu claims Americans are afraid to criticize Israel:

"The Jewish lobby is powerful, very powerful," he said. "[Y]ou know as well as I do that, somehow, the Israeli government is placed on a pedestal [in the US], and to criticize it is to be immediately dubbed anti-Semitic. . . I am not even anti-white, despite the madness of that group."

And Tutu doesn’t limit his moral proclamations to Israel. He calls America’s war on terrorism an exercise in "vengeance" rather than justice.

The 9-11 attacks, he says, were caused by the "poverty, hunger, and disease" plaguing the Third World, which he blamed, by implication, on the United States.

So when Mr. Tutu says there should be a ceasefire in the Mideast we should really all sit up and take notice.

He has almost the moral suasion of Kofi Annan.
