U Of VA Fights To Protect Climate Fraud

From an approving New York Times:

Quash the Subpoena, U.Va. Urges

May 28, 2010

As we noted briefly in Friday’s Times, the University of Virginia has filed a court petition asking a judge to block a subpoena of a prominent climate scientist’s research materials.

The subpoena was issued by the state attorney general. In the court petition, the university’s president, John T. Casteen III, said it had “sent a chill through the Commonwealth’s colleges and universities — a chill that has reached across the country and attracted the attention of all of higher education.”

The scientist, Michael Mann, formerly a professor at U.Va. and now at Pennsylvania State University, became the subject of controversy last year when his private e-mail messages and those of other climatologists were posted online in a scandal known as Climategate. The messages prompted some climate change skeptics and deniers to accuse scientists of exaggerating the evidence for human-driven global warming.

Dr. Mann was largely cleared of any wrongdoing after an inquiry by Penn State. Nonetheless, Virginia’s attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli, issued a subpoena demanding that the University of Virginia surrender any and all communications, research material and data produced by Dr. Mann during his time at at the institution. He said he wanted to know if the professor violated Virginia’s fraud laws in seeking state funding for research.

Those materials were due to be submitted on Thursday; instead the university filed the motion. Submitted in Albemarle County Circuit Court, the petition is one of the more pronounced recent efforts by the scientific community to put an end to what it characterizes as harassment.

Last week the Union of Concerned Scientists released a letter signed by 900 Virginia scientists and academics, including 325 from the University of Virginia, urging Mr. Cuccinelli to drop the investigation. And earlier this month 200 leading scientists published a letter in the journal Science calling such tactics against scientists “McCarthy-like threats of criminal prosecution.”

The only ‘McCarthy-ism here is the Charlie McCarthy-ism of the ‘global warmists.’

They happily mouthed whatever the fraud like Mr. Mann told them.

And now they are screaming bloody murder because they have been caught.

It’s like turning on the lights and watching the cockroaches scurry. These “scientists” are running scared now that their gravy train is being halted. They might have to get actual jobs and that frightens them immensely.

    • GL0120 says:

      Right on the money, ROP.
As Rush always advises, if something doesn’t make sense, follow the money.
Research grants are what university “Scientists” live on so anything that those grants them must be stopped.

    • JohnMG says:

Worse than having to get real jobs, they might be found criminally complicit in a massive fraud scheme.

At best they would be required to repay the stolen (make that fraudulently claimed) money back to the taxpayers. At worst, people like Mann etal. face the prospect of becoming somebody’s “wife” in a federal penal institution, where they’d be on the receiving end of what they’ve been doing to us for over two decades.

    • confucius says:

Does anyone know if the RICO Act can be used to prosecute this network of global warming cultists?

My lay interpretation of the Act is “yes.” If so, then the whole crooked lot can be criminally prosecuted, civilly sued and all the monies recovered.

      Anyone know?

  2. P. Aaron says:

If it’s a public university receiving public monies, kick the damn door open and have a look around.

  3. Chinnubie says:

Kudos to Mr. Cuccinelli for his ability to see through the hoax of man-made global warming. I just hope he can stand up to the pressure he’s brought to bare upon himself.
