Ukraine-Russian Talks Progress – Or Maybe Falter

From Time Magazine:

Kerry Hints at Progress in Ukraine Talks

By Denver Nicks | March 5, 2014

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry emerged from a meeting with Russia’s top diplomat with a renewed sense of confidence there may be a diplomatic solution to the crisis engulfing Ukraine and Crimea. But the top American diplomat stressed the need for patience…

“We agreed today, both sides and the Ukrainians also, that we are all better served if this can be resolved through dialogue,” Kerry told reporters in Paris after meeting there with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Ukraine’s territorial integrity must be restored and must be respected,” Kerry said.

While signaling that progress may have been made, Kerry cautioned that no one expected “that we were suddenly going to resolve [the Ukraine crisis] this afternoon.” “I want us to be realistic,” he said. “This is hard, tough stuff.” …

"Stuff"? But Mr. Kerry is so realistic.

By the way, just remember how well Obama and Kerry’s diplomatic solutions are working in Syria and Iran.

Meanwhile, we have this from the Wall Street Journal:

Frantic U.S. Push for Direct Russia-Ukraine Talks Falters

Western Diplomats Gather in Paris but Fail to Get Kiev, Moscow to Table

By Jay Solomon and Stacy Meichtry | March 5, 2014

PARIS—U.S. and European diplomats failed in a daylong effort to get Russia and Ukraine to begin direct negotiations aimed at ending Moscow’s military incursion into the former Soviet state, raising the prospect of a protracted standoff.

In a hectic day of talks that shifted from the American embassy in Paris to the presidential Élysée Palace to the French foreign ministry, officials focused on arranging a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his new Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Deshchytsia.

When that encounter didn’t happen—even though they were in the same building—Secretary of State John Kerry played down the failure and cited hopeful signs in his own talks with Mr. Lavrov…

"Failure"? What failure? That’s not the way Time Magazine saw it.
