US ‘Protects’ Polar Bears, Despite Numbers

From those champions of truth and science at the Associated Press:

US lists polar bear as threatened species

By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday because of the loss of Arctic sea ice but also cautioned the decision should not be viewed as a path to address global warming.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses, meaning, he said, that the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future

The department outlined a set of administrative actions and limits to how it planned to protect the bear with its new status so that it would not have wide-ranging adverse impact on economic activities from building power plants to oil and gas exploration.

“This listing will not stop global climate change or prevent any sea ice from melting,” said Kempthorne…

He cited conclusions by department scientists that sea ice loss will likely result in two-thirds of the polar bears disappearing by mid-century. The bear population across the Arctic from Alaska to Greenland doubled from about 12,000 to 25,000 since 1960, but he noted that scientists now predict a significant population decline.

It is the first time that the Endangered Species Act has been used to protect a species threatened by the impacts of global warming.

Environmentalists and a number of Democrats in Congress welcomed the decision to bring the bear under the protective umbrella of the Endangered Species Act, but expressed concern that its protection would be blunted by the provisions and exceptions outlined by Kempthorne.

The Bush administration “is forcing the polar bear to sink or swim,” said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., chairman of a House committee on global warming.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., called it “a lifeline for our last remaining polar bears” but said the bear’s survival won’t be assured without limits on oil development in the same Arctic waters where the bears are found

Once again we are witnessing the triumph of propaganda over the truth.

And once again the media and the rest of the left celebrate. Or rather, complain that this preposterous ruling has not gone far enough:

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., called it “a lifeline for our last remaining polar bears” but said the bear’s survival won’t be assured without limits on oil development in the same Arctic waters where the bears are found.

That is to say, limits on US oil development in the Arctic water.  — Not anyone else’s.

Obviously Mr. Kerry so hates the United States and is so besotted of OPEC and Mr. Chavez that he is willing to have his unfortunate constituents either freeze to death or bankrupt themselves to heat their houses and get to work.

He has his priorities.

Well, since polar bears have been tracked swimming continuously for 62 miles, I say let ‘em swim.

So a doubling of the population of bears qualifies as our last remaining polar bears in John Kerry’s warped mind. We should take up a donation and send him–unarmed–for a 2 week all expenses paid tent camping trip on an arctic ice-flow. I’ll water-proof the tent with bacon fat for him. That way he can see who is really threatened.

Canada, home to two-thirds of the world’s polar bears, will not for now follow the U.S. lead in listing the animals as threatened, Environment Minister John Baird indicated. Demonstrating that not every liberal politician in North America has totally lost their minds.

    ROFLMAO!!!

Actually, Baird’s a member of the Conservative Party of Canada.
I was under the impression that we were going to follow the US’s lead on this. I’m glad to hear otherwise.

Not that we didn’t know it from the whole Global Warming movement in the first place, but I can’t see how any scientist worthy of the word wouldn’t be completely embarassed by this situation.

The data is telling you the exact opposite of what you are predicting will occur.

You’re no longer practicing science but rather astrology.

    “Oh, but the models say…”

The ones programmed by humans based on assumptions by humans that have not yet correctly predicted anything?

Lest we forget, astronomers did work out “models” to accurately predict the movement of the planets in an earth-centric solar system prior to Galileo’s theories as well.

So damn the data, announce the results you want.

A sad day indeed for science, but yet “scientists” will continue to berate Bush and others for not taking what they have to say as truth.

    I wonder why.

A little insight from Hugh Hewitt on the implications of this moronic decision.

The Endangered Species Act operates in a very unaccountable fashion, and if the polar bear is listed as a “threatened” species, every federal action –the grant of a permit, the award of a grant– that leads even indirectly to the emission of greenhouse gases will come under at least the theoretical review of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service pursuant to Section 7 of the ESA. MSM continues to report the controversy as though its impact will be limited to the arctic region, when in fact it is as likely to delay or destroy economic activity in any part of the lower 48 as it is in Alaska.

The immediate response of impacted industries and consumers should be a series of test cases to force the delineation of the reach of the Act’s application to the polar bear and the gases allegedly causing the destruction of its ice habitat, test cases brought in jurisdictions most reasonable on such matters. Allowing the ESA to slowly ensnare industries previously unregulated by its commands via suits in jurisdictions cherry-picked by environmental activists would be the worst possible result.

Hewitt is correct in his assessment. We can expect an endless stream of suits blocking any sort of development in the Arctic. So much for drilling in ANWAR and energy independence for the next several years.

I agree BillK. As I’m sure most of you know, atmospheric science isn’t the only scientific discipline that is politically motivated. Acheology, geology and many disciplines are fraught with examples of people being drummed out of their positions for daring to “upset the apple cart” that is the evolution, the age of the Earth, ancestry of animals, Egyptian studies and many other examples. People find things all the time that don’t fit the “thoery of the day” and they are afraid to even publish what they find and when they do they are made a laughing stock by their peers who dare not buck the system.

Todays scientific community no longer has the appeal or authority they once had with the public because people can see what science swears isn’t there or vice versa. It’s become a political movement of people on the government dole of grant money who will not take any position, scientific or not, that may jeopardize their position at the taxpayers teat.

I thought the polar bear population had increased? This is crazy!

“A sad day indeed for science……”

BillK, think of all of the Scientists that devoted their life work to a theory, (solar flares, cycles of global cooling, et al) and the Liberals essentially render their theories useless/inacurate in order to fulfill their stupid political agenda. (All in the name of “carbon credits” or just plain, more taxes.) Sheesh!

  9. Lipstick on a PIAPS

So let me see if I’ve got this straight. If there were polar bears instead of people that were killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 THEN we could all be unified in the Global War on Terror? THEN could we waterboard the people responsible? THEN could we lock them up in Guantanamo Bay and throw away the key? THEN we wouldn’t have to worry what these people responsible for this act think about us?!? Liberals on this blog help us out!

  10. TheChicagoWay

The “science” behind polar bear population trends is as clear as the “science” behind manmade global warming. (Oh, I’m sorry….”climate change”). I dare you to find hard proof that the overall polar bear population is declining, much less threatened……

There are plenty of articles on what we have to DO about polar bears and global warming. Very little information on the hard science proving same…. For example, in the latest IPCC report, (THOUSANDS of pages, MILLIONS of free lunches), there are a grand total of EIGHT PAGES on causation. (These eight pages cite “models”, but, of course, the models themselves are not presented). The rest is crystal ball gazing on an enormous scale. Speaking of scales, when are they going to be lifted from our eyes?
