Cincinnati – Federal officials in Ohio have sued a member of the American Civil Liberties Union’s national board of directors, contending he never repaid government-backed student loans that date back to the 1980s.

Scott Greenwood, 43, a high-powered civil rights lawyer, blamed the government’s debt-collection lawsuit on a banking mix-up that he said he didn’t know about until a reporter phoned him Thursday.

The government claims he owes $8,000 in principal and interest for money borrowed to attend law school at the University of Chicago.

In recent years, Greenwood has been at the forefront of several major legal battles.

He helped negotiate a landmark settlement with the Cincinnati Police Department that has been hailed as a national model to prohibit racial profiling. He won a federal court order in 2003 that forced a rural school system in Adams County to remove tablets containing the Ten Commandments from school entrances.

He has been involved in ACLU actions against Secretary of State Ken Blackwell in Akron over punch-card voting systems, and defended protesters in Parma Heights who had beefs with the city’s parks. In December, he helped lead a workshop for the nation’s mayors about the benefits and risks of Tasers.

In separate interviews Thursday, Greenwood first said he was surprised by the government’s accusation and questioned its claim. Later, he said he found out he was the victim of an error by a bank.

"It’s already been cleared up," he said.

Greenwood said he did not believe federal officials targeted him because of his ACLU activities…

I suspect Mr. Greenwood just didn’t feel like he needed to repay his student loan, since he is already contributing so much to the betterment of the country with his noble works.
