US Taxpayers Support The ‘Gaza Flotilla’

From International Solidarity Movement is the group that along with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, and the Israel Committee Against House Demolitions, started the Free Gaza Movement. The Free Gaza Movement who are the people who organize the flotillas to send supplies into Gaza.

Well, it turns out that at least two of these groups, the International Solidarity Movement and the Israel Committee Against House Demolitions, receive funding through an American 501c3 tax exempt “charity.”

On ISM’s ‘donations’ page, they explain how to make a tax deductible donation:

According to Guidestar, the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute is indeed registered as a 501c3 “charity.” Here is their mission statement:

Mission Statement

The A.J. Muste Memorial Institute was founded in 1974 to further the goals of its namesake, US pacifist leader A.J. Muste: to explore and teach how nonviolence can be used to bring about world peace, and social and economic justice. Through grants, sponsorships, publications and management of a building in New York City that serves as home to a number of activist organizations, the Institute seeks to help people spread the message of nonviolent social change all over the world.

Here is a little more on the AJMMI, from Discover The Networks:

A.J. Muste Memorial Institute

Named after socialist, union activist, and war resister Abraham Johannes Muste (1885-1967), the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute was founded in 1974 by a group of pacifists who proclaimed a deep "commitment to nonviolent radical change by providing the movement for peace and justice with practical, concrete support." Working out of its New York City headquarters, a building it dubs the "Peace Pentagon," the Institute publishes books and pamphlets against war and in favor of nonviolence, and provides grants and sponsorships to leftist grassroots groups throughout the U.S. and around the world.

In its early years, the Muste Institute was run entirely by volunteers who worked at a borrowed desk in the New York City office of the War Resisters League (WRL). In 1978 the Institute purchased, from WRL, a three-story office building (the aforementioned “Peace Pentagon”) in downtown Manhattan to serve as a permanent base of operations for itself and other local activist groups. Today the Institute rents out office space in this building to a number of organizations that share its leftist and anti-American perspectives. The Institute subsidizes the office rents for these tenants, using income from several commercial storefront rentals to offset the cost of the subsidies. This arrangement enables the Institute to provide low-cost office space for its tenant groups, among which are the following:

    * Deep Dish TV: Created in 1986 by leftist activist Dee Dee Halleck, this satellite channel airs radical videos on the FSTV satellite channel, including Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now!

    * Nicaragua Solidarity Network of Greater New York: This pro-Sandinista communist organization, created with the help of Cuban Intelligence, condemns U.S. intervention in Latin America and encourages grassroots resistance through its Weekly News Update

    * Socialist Party USA: This organization seeks to establish a socialist order in the United States.

    * War Resisters League: In the Cold War against the Soviet empire, this organization led efforts to dismantle America’s nuclear capabilities. WRL was perhaps the first major anti-war organization to blame America for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. On that very day, WRL released a statement saying, "The policies of militarism pursued by the United States have resulted in millions of deaths. . . . We condemn without reservations attacks such as those which occurred today, which strike at thousands of civilians — may these profound tragedies remind us of the impact U.S. policies have had on other civilians in other lands." …

    * Not In Our Name (NION): This self-described "peace movement" is a Communist front group initiated by the longtime Maoist activist C. Clark Kissinger – a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP), a Maoist group calling for the overthrow of the U.S. government and its replacement with a communist dictatorship.

    * Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO): A member of the steering committee of International ANSWER (which is a front group for the communist Workers World Party), IFCO promotes a "people-to-people foreign policy" to provide aid to "the victims of US foreign policy."

    * Socialist Party of New York City: This organization declares that it is "committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of democratic socialist society."

A member organization of the Peace and Security Funders Group, the A.J. Muste Institute commonly uses its tax-exempt status to sponsor likeminded organizations that are not tax-exempt, thereby enabling the latter to receive tax-deductible contributions from the public. Among the organizations sponsored (and otherwise financially supported) by the Institute are: the Center for Environmental Democracy; the Climate Crisis Coalition; Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants; the Global Exchange; the Holy Land Trust; the Coalition for the Human Rights of Immigrants; the International Solidarity Movement; International Nonviolent Initiatives; the International Women’s Partnership for Peace and Justice; the Denver Justice and Peace Committee Education Fund; the International Peace Bureau; Kairos/Plowshares; the International Peace Bureau; the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions; Justice for Detainees; the Nicaragua Solidarity Network of Greater New York; United for Peace and Justice; War Resisters’ International; the War Resisters League; the National Lawyers Guild; the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; Jews for Racial and Economic Justice; and Justice for Detainees.

Not only does the A.J. Muste Institute make grants to organizations whose objectives it supports, but it also occasionally receives grants from likeminded foundations. In 2002, for example, the Institute received a $10,000 grant from the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, and the following year it received a $25,000 grant from the Samuel Rubin Foundation.

It is all so incestuous. And, as usual, it is being subsidized by the US taxpayer.

Moreover, as we have noted several times previously, 501c3 “charities” are prohibited by the IRS from engaging in or promoting illegal activities or even activities that are against US policy. Such as aiding officially sanctioned terrorist groups like Hamas.

From the guidelines of the Internal Revenue Service:

1. Introduction

Exempt purposes may generally be equated with the public good, and violations of law are the antithesis of the public good. Therefore, the conduct of such activities may be a bar to exemption

2. IRC 501(c)(3) and IRC 501(c)(4) Organizations

A. Charity Law

Exemption recognized under IRC 501(c)(3) is unique in that, unlike exemption under other paragraphs of IRC 501(c), it is grounded in charity law, so that denial of exemption under IRC 501(c)(3) may be based on charity law.

(1) Substantiality Test

Violation of constitutionally valid laws is inconsistent with exemption under IRC 501(c)(3). As a matter of trust law, one of the main sources of the general law of charity, planned activities that violate laws are not in furtherance of a charitable purpose. "A trust cannot be created for a purpose which is illegal. The purpose is illegal … if the trust tends to induce the commission of crime or if the accomplishment of the purpose is otherwise against public policy…. Where a policy is articulated in a statute making certain conduct a criminal offense, then …, a trust is illegal if its performance involves such criminal conduct, or if it tends to encourage such conduct." IV Scott on Trusts Section 377 (3d ed. 1967). Thus, all charitable trusts (and by implication all charitable organizations, regardless of their form) are subject to the requirement that their purpose may not be illegal or contrary to public policy. Rev. Rul. 71-447, 1971-2 C.B. 230; Restatement (Second) of Trusts, Section 377, Comment c (1959). Moreover by conducting criminal activities, an organization increases the burden of government and thus thwarts a well recognized charitable goal, i.e., relief of the burdens of government

Therefore, if an organization engages in illegal acts that are a substantial part of its activities, it does not qualify for exemption under IRC 501(c)(3).

And this:

(4) Planning Illegal Acts

Not only is the actual conduct of illegal activities inconsistent with exemption, but the planning and sponsoring of such activities are also incompatible with charity and social welfare. Rev. Rul. 75-384 holds that an organization formed to promote world peace that planned and sponsored protest demonstrations at which members were urged to commit acts of civil disobedience did not qualify for IRC 501(c)(3) or (4) exemption. G.C.M. 36153, dated January 31, 1975, states that because planning and sponsoring illegal acts are in themselves inconsistent with charity and social welfare it is not necessary to determine whether illegal acts were, in fact, committed in connection with the resulting demonstrations or whether such a determination can be made prior to conviction of an accused

Also, as the guidelines notice, ‘charities’ cannot do illegal acts even in the name of “world peace.”

  1. NoNeoCommies says:

When will Israel realize that the PR war is lost and just deal effectively with these goons?
They should have damaged their propellers and left them to drift or actually staged a “real” commando raid.
It’s not like the left would interpret the video any differently.

  2. Trialdog says:

True NoNeo, true. The PR battle is lost for Israel and Israel mishandled the flotilla. Israel must understand the PR battle is well coordinated and deal with it as it is. The Obama administration is.
Look, this flotilla was a staged event from the beginning. Those who staged it are from the same groups that support and stage events for Obama. Think of international community organizers.
I believe one has to be naive to think the tactics used by the flotilla organizers, while not coordinated with the White House, fit right into the White House play book.
What does Obama want? The answer is a two state “solution.” Obama wants to see a “Palestinian state.”
So how is he going to do that?
The answer is simple. Obama and his crew do not mind seeing a very hot war develop between Israel and her neighbors. They’ve done nothing to discourage this from developing. In fact, they are condemning Israel for defending herself, refusing to veto hostile U.N. resolutions, and doing nothing to hold back Syria.
This sends the basic message to the Islamists that they are free to continue attacking Israel. International relations 101.
When the Islamists begin their promised war against Israel, expect more of the same from Obama. Israel will be villified and condemned. Then Obama will come in suggesting U.N. intervention. That will not consist of NATO member nations because Turkey will be supporting the Islamist nations. So we’ll have a U.N. “Peacekeeper” force without much U.S. direction or military strength. This force will set up boundries the Israelis cannot cross. Obama will begin referring to these boundries as the “Palestinian borders.” Obama will thereafter push for U.N. recognition of the new Palestinian state.
This is pretty basic stuff. So if the feigned outrage fits the Obama narrative, then so be it. Obama accepts it. That’s why the U.S. delayed its response.
So, maybe you read it here first but I am laying the blame for the next Arab-Israeli war directly at the feet of Obama. The U.S. could pressure hostile nations to stand down on Israeli attacks and could support Israel. Such would send a strong message to hostile nations they best not start anything or they’ll be hearing from us. Rather, the Obama administration is encouraging further attacks with a pathetic and short sighted foreign policy that could only have come from some idiotic facualty lounge discussion at Harvard. Obama will get his war, then blame Israel, and coordinate public opinion for U.N. recognition of a “Palestinian state,” then, finally, claim victory for solving Middle East problems and go to Oslo for another “Peace Prize.” In the meantime, people will die and Israel will have to deal with more terror from an extremely hostile and U.N. recognized terror state on its borders.
