U.S. working with Libya on Gadhafi visit to U.N.

By Matthew Lee, Associated Press Writer Tue Aug 25

WASHINGTON – In a bid to head off any embarrassing incidents, the State Department said Tuesday it is working with Libya to find a place for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to stay when he visits the United Nations next month…

Gadhafi might set up a Bedouin-style tent at a Libyan-owned estate in the upscale New Jersey suburb of Englewood to accommodate him and his entourage. Some of the families of victims of the Lockerbie bombing — 23 of the 259 people killed were from New Jersey — live nearby and local officials and residents have protested the idea.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said U.S. officials will keep in mind the "very raw sensibilities" of the families as it works to find a residence for Gadhafi, who is set to address the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 23.

"Our priority has been and will remain the families of the victims of this tragedy," Kelly told reporters. "We, of course, are sensitive to the concerns of the communities that might be affected by any travel arrangements made for the Libyan delegation."

Kelly said the department is in discussions with lawmakers and local authorities in the New York area on the matter and is "also talking to the Libyans to highlight the concerns that we have and the very raw sensibilities or sensitivities of the families who live in that area."

Kelly stressed that no decisions have been made as to where Gadhafi will stay. Nor, he said, has a decision been made on a request by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., who has asked that Gadhafi’s movement be limited to the immediate area around U.N. headquarters.

Under its host nation agreement with the United Nations, the United States is obligated to allow foreign leaders, other officials and diplomats into the country to visit or work at the U.N. with limited exceptions. However, provisions allow U.S. authorities to restrict their movement to a 25-mile radius around U.N. headquarters.

It was not immediately clear if Lautenberg’s proposal, which would essentially prevent Gadhafi from leaving the U.N. compound on Manhattan’s east side, would be enforceable.

Gadhafi met in person with the freed Lockerbie bomber, former intelligence agent Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, on his return to Libya…

And in a possibly related story, from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Cops nab man slaughtering lamb at Northwest Side home

August 26, 2009

A man was arrested and charged with possession of having animals for slaughter after he was found with four lambs, including one he allegedly killed, at his North Park neighborhood home on Sunday.

Abdulsalam Alawi, 38, of the 3200 block of West Ardmore Avenue, was charged with four counts of possession of animals for slaughter, municipal ordinance violations, according to a police report.

Alawi was arrested at 11:25 a.m. Sunday at his home, where he allegedly had four lambs in his garage — one that had already been killed prior to the arresting officers arrival, according to the report.

Alawi allegedly told officers he was intending to slaughter all four animals in preparation for his families’ upcoming holiday observance, according to the report.

Alawi allegedly told officers he knew his home was not licensed slaughterhouse or “kill floor,” according to the report. He was found to be in violation of the state department of agriculture guidelines and requirements

Of course Mr. Gadhafi doesn’t stop at slaughtering lambs.

On a side note this is a good opportunity to see the moral bankruptcy of the U.N. One need only to look at its speakers – the holocaust denying Ahmadinejad, the dictator Chavez, the terrorist lover Gadhafi. Maybe I’m a fool, but I have a hard time imagining why such an organization is beneficial to our country. The utopian pretense of all countries coming together to discuss their problems and promote human rights is not working.

Last year Islamic countries in the U.N. wanted to pass a binding resolution to prevent the “defamation of religion,” namely Islam. So for advocating universal human rights such as freedom of speech, the UN appears barren.

Amazing how this promoter of a 9/11 style airplane bombing against Americans going home to enjoy Christmas is getting to enjoy our soil, near one of the cities affected by terrorism – and less than 10 years after such an atrocity. Why Americans put up with this sort of thing is anyone’s guess….

Why hasn’t the Moron offered to let his moral equal from Libya pitch his tent on the White House lawn?

  3. Himself says:

Kaddafi’s tent is a distraction. The mastermind of PAF103 air piracy and mass murder should not be allowed anywhere near NYC airspace.

Moreover, JFK Intn’l is where mass murdered American dead were unceremoniously forklifted in cardboard boxes for their families to retrieve from the airport animal warehouse.

JFK is the LAST place Kaddafi should be permitted to set foot. The very idea is yet another agonizing insult to the victims’ families.

    Enough already!

  4. Liberals Demise says:

Why can’t this Bedouin punk pitch tent at the UN? That is where he will be safest from the infidels. Besides ……we are footing the tab…as usual!
Is his tent flame retardant? I hear that area of NJ is notorious for flaming arrows and Molotov cocktails!

LD .. that UN idea is a terrific one!!!

Maybe that ousted Honduran dictator wanna-be, ex-president o-blah-blah’s behind could sleep over in the tents, too. Yeah .. a party.

o-blah-blah could bring his sleeping bag over and invite the Castro’s and Chavez.
