Hey! Not all public schools are teaching the wrong things! I teach US history in the public schools and teach basically what Sharps Rifle and Exeter posted (though Exeter, that was very concise, I may quote you in a few weeks). While most social studies departments are liberal there are a few of us lone conservatives out there striving to spread the truth and teach our youth to THINK and see through the propaganda (on both sides). I'll use this article tomorrow in class and point out the inconsistancies.

I understand exactly what Exeter is saying -- this has always been my understanding of the political party histories. I'm not sure what Gipper is saying?

Anyway, my original point was, as stated by Exeter, that history must be re-written if the Democrats are going to come out looking like the saviors of US civilization.

wytammic - please get me in touch with those teachers - they're confused by the formative years of our two-party system, and in dire need of a wall-to-wall education.

Alexander Hamilton really created the first political party - the Federalists, who were dedicated to getting the Constitution ratified. Thomas Jefferson and other opponents - those who feared Federalism and wanted to retain the Articles of Confederation - were called the anti-Federalists. Jefferson later called his party the "Republicans" to imply that the Federalists were not on the side of the people. The Federalists disintegrated shortly afterwards, and the so-called Republicans began to splinter into "adjective" parties (National Republicans, Independent Republicans, Democratic Republicans, etc.). Andrew Jackson emerged from the Democratic Republicans and adopted the name, "Democrat". Their opponents, under Henry Clay, called themselves Whigs (after the British party of the rising middle-class). The Whigs eventually collapsed, divided as they were on slavery issues, while the remnants of that party gathered again and put John C. Fremont on their "Republican" ticket in 1856. They chose the name to insinuate that the Democrats had fallen away from Jefferson and their Republican roots. Then of course, Abraham Lincoln became president in 1860 - thus the birth (actually a rebirth) of the Republican Party.

Even now, the Democrats recognize Jefferson and Jackson as the founders of their party. Republicans, of course, are proud to be "The Party of Lincoln". These party names have been established since 1828 and 1856 respectively, and have not changed. The Democrats have been on the wrong side of every major issue since their beginning - abortion, segregation, slavery, the Federal banking system, even the adoption of the Constitution itself. I guess this is why they need to rewrite history through the publik skool system. The teachers are either woefully ignorant or outright lying. I'm not sure which one is worse.

"It gets confusing, those Republicans are actually today’s Democrats, and the Democrats are actually now today’s Republicans."

Your statement is untrue. I was taught the same thing and/or confused, too. The confusion mainly stems from the fact that the modern Democratic Party is an offshoot of the Democratic-Republican party. The modern Republican Party has a different bloodline.

From Wikipedia:

[The Republican Party was] founded in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and modernizers...

The Democratic-Republican Party was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in 1792. The term Democratic-Republican is a historian's usage. Its members identified the party as the Republicans, Jeffersonians, Democrats,[1] or combinations of these (Jeffersonian Republicans, etc.).[2] .[3] It was the dominant political party in the United States from 1800 to 1824, when it split into competing factions, one of which became the modern Democratic Party.

Excuse me, but wasn’t Abraham Lincoln a fricking REPUBLICAN?

Isn’t he credited with ENDING SLAVERY?

I know you will find this difficult to believe, and I understand because we're on the same page here. However, my daughter (conservative to the core and attends an Ivy League University) learned in the public high school she attended that the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln were actually the Democrats. It gets confusing, those Republicans are actually today's Democrats, and the Democrats are actually now today's Republicans. Understand? Me neither, but that's what the publik skools are saying. :)

1st - "Excuse me, but wasn’t Abraham Lincoln a fricking REPUBLICAN?"

Another peculiar element of the early Republican party is, the Abolition Movement was the "Religious Right" - the narrow, "fanatic" base of the GOP much like the Pro-Life movement is now. In the years following the Civil War, it was the Radical Republican base that passed the XIII, XIV and XV Amendments to ensure American citizenship for blacks. It was the Democrats, after wresting control of Congress, that allowed the southern states to institute segregation with the 'Black Codes' and 'Jim Crow' laws (ironically, they did this by deceiving the newly-enfranchised blacks).

Somehow, the Dems have managed to realign the truth - slavery=freedom, and abolition=slavery. You have to admire the accomplishment; I can't think of a more successful lie in history.

Republican does NOT mean slavery. Most Republicans lean toward conservatism and desire a limited government. Many Republican politicians strive to live up to the term "public servant". Democrats, on the other hand, tend to favor a bigger government--a government where the people are made to serve. In essence, liberalism, socialism, and the Democratic party take us closer to slavery, with the Democratic leaders being the slavemasters. (If thats too harsh a word, you can substitute king and serfs.)

States Rights Gist.
Edmund Ruffin.
Judah P. Benjamin.
Jefferson Davis.
Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Joseph Wheeler.
Wade Hampton.
"Bull" Connor.
George McGovern.
Orval Faubus.
All Democrats.

The Secession Crisis of 1836.
The initiation of secession in 1860.
The Firing on Fort Sumter, the initial act of aggression of the United States Civil War.
The firing of water cannons on civil rights supporters.
The murders of civil rights supporters.
Prompted by Democrats.

Why?

BECAUSE THE DEMOCRATS WERE THE PARTY OF SLAVERY AND SEGREGATION!!!

Who opposed the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery?
Democrats.
Who supported the Ku Klux Klan?
Democrats.
Who instituted the "Black Codes"?
Democrats.
Who maintained "Jim Crow" and segregation?
Democrats.

No matter how much they deny it and lie about it, the 'rats supported slavery, secession and wanted to surrender to the Confederacy. Any American with any honest knowledge of history knows this. The 'rats stood for segregation and still want to keep blacks enslaved and beholden to them. These creeps haven't changed in 170 years, they've just become more evil.

It doesn't take much looking back at all to see that during the Civil War and after the Republicans was the party of Lincoln and blacks voted in favor of it, which didn't start to change until the Roosevelt New Deal in the 1930's. Ergo, Republicans had nothing to do with slavery.

But it doesn't matter. Incidents like this will get buried on page 15 of the daily news, if reported at all. Page 1 news is reserved for Obama, we should all know this by now.
