Venezuela Is Now Running Out Of Toilet Paper

From a very understanding Associated Press:

Now Venezuela is running out of toilet paper

By FABIOLA SANCHEZ and KARL RITTER | May 16, 2013

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — First milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities — toilet paper.

Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the embattled socialist government says it will import 50 million rolls to boost supplies.

That was little comfort to consumers struggling to find toilet paper on Wednesday.

"This is the last straw," said Manuel Fagundes, a shopper hunting for tissue in downtown Caracas.

They are running out of straws, too?

One supermarket visited by The Associated Press in the capital on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread. "I’ve been looking for it for two weeks," said Cristina Ramos. "I was told that they had some here and now I’m in line."

Economists say Venezuela’s shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government’s controls on foreign currency.

"State-controlled prices — prices that are set below market-clearing price — always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union," said Steve Hanke [sic], professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University.

Isn’t it funny how toilet paper is always such a problem for communist countries. But that is the problem with socialism. To paraphrase Lady Thatcher: ‘eventually you run out of other people’s toilet paper.’

President Nicolas Maduro, who was selected by the dying Hugo Chavez to carry on his "Bolivarian revolution," claims that anti-government forces, including the private sector, are causing the shortages in an effort to destabilize the country.

Why didn’t he think to blame Bush?

The government this week announced it would import 760,000 tons of food and 50 million rolls of toilet paper.

Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming blamed the shortage of toilet tissue on "excessive demand" built up as a result of "a media campaign that has been generated to disrupt the country."

Even the media is involved.

"The revolution will bring the country the equivalent of 50 million rolls of toilet paper," he was quoted as saying Tuesday by state news agency AVN. "We are going to saturate the market so that our people calm down." …

Fleming, the commerce minister, said monthly consumption of toilet paper was normally 125 million rolls, but that current demand "leads us to think that 40 million more are required."

"We will bring in 50 million to show those groups that they won’t make us bow down," he said.

Mr. Fleming sure has a way with words.

    Simple solution: ask Carlos Slim to start home-delivery of the NYT in Venezuela. Nobody seems to want that rag here in the States.

  2. “Commerce Minister Alejandro Fleming blamed the shortage of toilet tissue on “excessive demand” ”

    Are the Venezuelans scared sh***less of their Marxist government? Has the food deteriorated to such a low level? Or have the political parties used up wood pulp to make signs and placards?

    Fleming also said, “The revolution will bring the country the equivalent of 50 million rolls of toilet paper,” he was quoted as saying Tuesday by state news agency AVN. “We are going to saturate the market so that our people calm down.” …

    Maybe the “revolution” can give them employment and prosperity? Nah.

    I would assume they used all their toilet paper wiping up all the crap that came out of Maduro’s mouth.

  4. Another in your face example of Socialist Economic Policy and vivid evidence how it causes economic disaster.

    Or, Consuela’s House of Painful Burritos has expanded into more outlets. I dunno which.

    Shortage of toilet paper was Chavez’s brilliant idea to ration everything. Venezuela wants to stockpile everything for natural brush camouflage as they increase ties and military aid to Iran.
    There is a shortage of toilet paper in middle-eastern countries. They think smelling like sh*t is sexy.

      Well, with Venezuela’s growing ties with Iran, Al-Qaeda, and Hezbollah, they scrapped Chavez’s 60 second washing and replace them with Islam Muslim cleaning practices,
      Which can use rocks, tree leaves, and priority to recycled paper before manufactured.
      Chavez is pushing tobboco and coco leave rolling papers the new toilet paper to save.

      youtubes are invaluable for Muslim washing rituals after “urniation and defecation”

      called “Istinja” : Cleaning Oneself after Urination and Defecation according to AICP

      see the 2 minute plus demonstration or read the instructions that must be done of sexual organs prior to praying. Below is the 4 minute demonstration for Wudo which deals with behind the bear, arms, face and beard. (and we know they need to wash those beards)

      “It is an obligation to make Istinja’ from the wet najas -filth after it has passed from any of the eliminatory outlets. This means if urine or the like passes out of a person ,the person must clean himself from the najas- filth before praying, otherwise the prayer will not be valid

      ;However , one does not have to make Istinja’ after passing gas.

      • Istinja’ can be done either by using water or by using a material that is pure ,solid ,dry ,”uprooting” and “unrespected”
      (as in)
      Such materials are like rocks, tissues or papers that do not have any Islamic material on them.

      • Performing Istinja’ using water is done by pouring the purifying water over the contaminated place until it becomes pure.

      • As for performing istinja’ with other than water, it is done by ‘wiping the outlet 3 times’ with the aforementioned described materials. ‘If the outlet is still not clean’, more wipes must be done until it is clean.

      It is not valid to have less than 3 wipes, even if cleanliness is achieved with 2 wipes (except in Venezuela)

      Benefit:

      It is a rewardable deed (sunnah) before entering the toilet room to say:

      Bismillah .Allahumma inni a^udhu bika minal-khubthi wal khaba’ith.

      Which means: “O Allah I seek refuge with you from the harm of the male and female devils.”

      Also after leaving the toilet room it is sunnah to say:

      Ghufranak. Al-Hamdullillahi-lladhi adhaba ^annil-adha wa^afana

      Which means: “O Allah I ask your forgiveness. Praise be to Allah, who took the harm away from me, and granted me good health.”

      Compliments from the AICP

      It does not appear they use disposable water pitchers for sanitary reasons.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Wait til schools, stores, and work places are required to build wash rooms to accommodate for their religious rites required of Istinja to ward off the devil, and the “Wudo” washing from head to toe. Well, maybe it’s only down to the ankles. I can’t remember.
      I just hope the Muslim Cleric got the job of washing that rag head Osama Bin Laden’s corpse. He did not deserve it. He sure did not allow American’s body’s he blew up to be washed.
    I did not make the above ritual up.
    But, as the shortage of toilet paper is part of the Agenda 21 global environmental regulations and we already see recycled toilet paper (no bleach used make you fear if the toilet paper has not been sterilized)
    I do foresee a problem in the US worldwide as curbside recycling is growing (we have several bins now) the latest for cardboard so you understand that newspaper and cardboard has it’s own, and high quality paper can not be put in either or it won’t be picked up.
    I was reading that there is a shortage of fertilizer; the chemical created kind instead of using the cow manure the green people complain of harming the air.
    So, perhaps instead of rocks as the Muslims use, one should save peelings off fruit and vegetables which can be recycled for composts.
    And one should question the White House composts used to grow the hops and spices used for their beer brewery that does not have to pass inspection.
    The staff have quite a messy job dealing with sorting through the White House garbage. No doubt they’ve built a bigger shed for the composting then when the original garden was just for lettuce and peas.
