Vietnam Is Abuzz Over Chelsea’s Wedding

From the Associated Press:

Vietnam abuzz over Chelsea Clinton’s wedding

Thu Jul 22, 2010

HANOI, Vietnam – Chelsea Clinton’s big day may be half a world away but that hasn’t tempered enthusiasm in Vietnam for her upcoming nuptials.

Who can doubt that the people of Vietnam are “abuzz” in eager anticipation of the social event of the season?

In Hanoi on Thursday for diplomatic meetings a little over a week before the July 31 wedding, mother-of-the-bride and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was given a wedding present — a white tablecloth — for her daughter by the Vietnamese government along with gemstone mosaic portrait of her and Chelsea during their 2000 visit to the country.

"Very nice," Clinton said when Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem presented her with the tablecloth and congratulated her on the marriage of her only child. "I’m very honored. I will be very pleased to give it to her."

Arriving at a hotel to speak to a luncheon hosted by the local American Chamber of Commerce, she was greeted by and posed glowingly for photos with a group of young American women holding a congratulatory sign reading "Mazel Tov Chelsea."

Clinton, who is on the last leg of a four-nation tour that also took her to Afghanistan, Pakistan and South Korea, was introduced by chamber president Hank Tomlinson as "the first secretary of state to visit Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korea and Vietnam while also planning her daughter’s wedding."

Clinton laughed and said jokingly that traveling while "trying to help organize my daughter’s wedding is proof … that I may be lacking in common sense."

Of course in every joke there is a little truth.

Meanwhile, we have this report from Asian News International (ANI):

Chelsea Clinton’s wedding price tag could reach $2m

Fri, Jul 23, 2010

Washington, July 23 (ANI): The total price tag of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding is expected to reach 2 million dollars…

Details of the wedding are slowly leaking out – it’s presumed to be in the small upstate New York village of Rhinebeck, reports ABC News.

While nobody but the Clintons knows the exact price, it’s shaping up to be a costly affair: the total price tag could easily reach 2 million dollars.

When Jenna Bush got married two years ago at the president’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, planners estimated it only cost 100,000 dollars for the "down-home" celebration

Compare and contrast.

    Who cares?

I have a zit on my butt that is far more important.

  2. U NO HOO says:

    2 million dollars?

That’s more than I make in a day.

  3. TwilightZoned says:

They’re the only ones abuzz with the exception
of our propagandist media. Who cares is right.

  4. Right of the People says:

Are the O-hole and Thunderbutt attending or does he have something more important (like playing golf) to do?

  5. canary says:

When you think of the Vietnamese refugees here in America it’s tasteless.

They left out her 2nd sneak stop in dangerous Indonesia, where the hatred for Obama just keeps on growing.

  6. canary says:

Expect pearls & coral coming back with Hillary. Her son-in-law isn’t going to tell.
Hillary’s new diary blog. I was looking for the Philippines 3 deep sea earthquakes since Obama & Indonesia are doing their deep sea drilling right smack next to them, and this came up. A new official government site called the “DipNote” the U.S. Department Of State Official Blog. William J. Burns (Under Secretary of State blog July 19,2010 on his visit.

It has pic of little Indonesian girls waving “both” U.S. & Indonesia flags together if that’s any sign of the future of the U.S. Flag.

“U.S. Commitment To Building a Comprehensive Partnership With Indonesia

I’m happy to be back in Indonesia. ….It’s also given me the chance to reaffirm the strong U.S. commitment to building a comprehensive partnership with Indonesia.

Sometimes the day-to-day work of diplomacy doesn’t always make headlines,

but I can assure you that our governments have been consistently working hard to deepen our bilateral relations.

A good example of this is the collaboration of U.S. scientists and Indonesian oceanographers in deep sea exploration by the U.S….

We’ll continue to build our comprehensive partnership when
Secretary Clinton and Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa co-chair a joint commission later this year.

One more thing. Even though it might not always be in the headlines,

the United States-Indonesia partnership remains a priority. And I’ll be back. ““““““““““`
Burns repeats 2 points. It’s not in the media, but Obama is committed to merging the U.S.A. with Indonesia. The picture is alarming.

It has little Indonesia girls waving “both the U.S. American flags & Indonesia’s flags together.

While the Philippines are our allies, and we have Marines losing their lives to radical muslims trying to take them over, I pray to God that Obama does not send our soldiers to Indonesia because the majority of people hate U.S. & Obama. All the mining pearls, coral, & oil in the Coral Triangle means nothing to people who would rather blow themselves up.

  7. Liberals Demise says:

I’m sure if Frau Hildabeast were to stop by N.Korea they’d give her Samsonite luggage (filled with a dirty sumptin’) to bring back too.
I mean she said she is lacking in the ‘common sense” department.

  8. caligirl9 says:

Isn’t it a conflict of interest for ‘ol Hil to keep the tablecloth and portrait?

Or has the concept of conflict of interest gone down the toilet (or applied only when necessary) by the current administration?

BTW, hideous “portrait.” Wonder if it was produced by child slave labor and its cost/worth?

  9. Rusty Shackleford says:

Funny, for a Western artist to depict East Asians with coolie hats would be categorically stereotypical. So what, exactly is the message here? I mean, I don’t know much about “art”.

  10. proreason says:

The fact that Chelsea has made it to this stage in life is testament to the resiliance of human beings.

Imagine having Bubba and the Hildabeast as your parents.

It’s a miracle they didn’t throw her off a pyramid in order to get Hillary elected President. They must not have thought of it.

  11. canary says:

Caligirl, I can’t get anyone to tell me why Obama didn’t claim his gigantic golden necklace as income, that his Arabian Royal Highness hung around his neck, as he took his 2nd public bow too.

    • caligirl9 says:

He had that part of the “presidential give-back” of gifts hidden somewhere in the “health care bill,” so now it’s legal??

  12. Motherofthebride says:

Yuck!! What are you people talking about?? Would you please stop and take a look at that atrocious portrait that Vietnam gave poor Chelsea???

WHERE is she supposed to hang that thing in her classy penthouse?? Now she’ll have to stash it in a closet somewhere until some diplomat from Vietnam comes to visit! Who cares about the cost of the wedding?? Could we show a little compassion for this poor girl! What an ugly portrait!!

    • Steve says:

And by ‘penthouse’ you mean the Clintons’ new $12 million mansion in Bedford Hills, New York.

But, yes, you make a good point. Of course the Vietnamese made up for it by giving her a white table cloth, as well.

(Which could easily be draped over said photograph.)
