Hugo Chavez Wins ‘Dictator For Life’ Vote

[Please scroll down for update.]

From Mr. Chavez’s fans at the Agence France-Pressee:

Venezuelans vote on lifting term limits

by Sophie Nicholson

CARACAS (AFP) – Venezuelans went to the polls Sunday to vote on changes to the constitution which, if approved, would allow President Hugo Chavez unlimited bids to stay in power.

The anti-liberal leader expelled a European deputy and once again slammed alleged assassination attempts against him in the run-up to the vote, which could determine whether his self-styled socialist revolution stretches into the next decade…

"I have an exalted faith in respect of Sunday’s result — the triumph of the people, the Constitution," Chavez said hours before polling stations opened at 6:00 am (1030 GMT).

Chavez supporters let off firecrackers and played bugles to ensure citizens woke up early and came out to vote…

Chavez, first elected in 1998 and re-elected in 2006, said that if the change were approved, he would have "the outlook open until beyond 2013," when his current term expires…

Former Cuban president and Chavez’s hero Fidel Castro said that "the destiny of the people of ‘our America’ will depend a lot on victory (of the ‘Yes’ vote) and that will influence the rest of the planet," in an article published in Cuban media.

Venezuela expelled European Parliament deputy Luis Herrero late Friday after he called Chavez a "dictator." …

Of course there isn’t much doubt about the outcome.

Even if this is voted down, Mr. Chavez will continue to run that country with his oily iron fist for as long as he wants.

By the way, isn’t it disturbing how familiar the propaganda art of dictators like Mr. Chavez has become?

  Update!

A shocking update from an elated CNN:

Venezuela’s Chavez declares victory in term-limits referendum

CARACAS, Venezuela (CNN) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declared victory Sunday night in a constitutional referendum that will allow him to run for a third six-year term in 2012.

With 94 percent of the votes counted, about 54.4 percent of the voters supported the referendum and 45.6 percent were opposed, the National Election Commission said in a news conference Sunday night.

“Victory, victory, popular victory,” Chavez told a jubilant crowd of thousands gathered in front of the Miraflores presidential palace. “This is a clear victory for the people. A clear victory for the revolution.”

The National Assembly approved the referendum last month. Venezuelans narrowly rejected a similar measure in December 2007.

If the results hold, Chavez could run for a third consecutive six-year term in 2012…

What a surprise, huh?

With slightly bigger ears, and a necktie, the poster could be Obama. The socialist rhetoric and sloganeering already are the same.

I see that the Petrothug from Venezuela is at it again. Notice now that as the price of gasoline per gallon is inching up again, he’s shooting his mouth off once more. Pompous paranoid ass!

  6. Perhaps Mr Obama should be asked if he thinks it is appropriate that the constitution be changed in this circumstance?

Certainly, a response (or lack thereof) would reveal his truest intent here?

“More than 16 million Venezuelans were eligible to take part in Sunday’s vote, which international observers said was free and fair. ”

Have you forgotten that a House joint resolution has already been introduced to try to repeal the 22nd Amendment allowing His Majesty to run forever?
