Walter Cronkite Stiffs Gal Pal Simon

From the New York Post:

August 23, 2009 — And that’s the way it is, Joanna.

While former opera singer Joanna Simon was Walter Cronkite’s constant companion in the last four years of his life, summering in Martha’s Vineyard and yachting off the East Coast with the legendary TV anchor, he didn’t leave her a cent when he died last month.

The most trusted man in America divvied up his estate among his three children and aides at CBS, leaving Simon out, his will shows. Cronkite also bequeathed mementos from his storied journalism career to his alma mater, the University of Texas.

The will was written in August 2005, before he and Simon started dating. It was filed in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court last week, a month after the legendary CBS newsman died at 92.

Simon and Cronkite grew close while each was mourning the loss of a spouse in 2005 — both had apartments in the United Nations Plaza building.

After Cronkite’s death, Simon told The Post, "He was the most remarkable man who ever lived and the love of my life." She also spoke glowingly of their sailing trips to Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Newport, RI.

Cronkite’s daughter Nancy said her father was "very generous" to Simon while alive, but never intended to put her in his will…

Hilariously, the Post left out a few pertinent details.

Such as that fact that Joanna Simon is also Carly Simon’s sister. And, more to the point, also a daughter of Richard Simon of Simon and Schuster.

So she doesn’t really need the money.

But even so.

    From Wikepedia:
In the recent past, Joanna Simon (69) is reported to have established a relationship with now-deceased broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite, who stated in an interview for the New York Post in January 2006: “We are keeping company, as the old phrase used to be. I’m not making any moves immediately. I don’t think it’s proper. My wife has only been gone less than a year. I’ll wait until that year has passed, at least.” Walter Cronkite’s wife Betsy had died on March 15, 2005, aged 89. In 2007, Joanna Simon was described in the press as Cronkite’s “girlfriend.”

Guess Cronkite’s family kept a close eye on his estate planning.

Still – he couldn’t even leave her a sentimental token or something.

      Well, sometimes (wait for it)

      “That’s the way it is”

And why exactly does anyone think that this ‘gal pal’ deserves one single cent of his estate? Or be in the will – isn’t that akin to prostitution?

Cronkite spent 64 years with his wife & family – he spent 4 with the ‘gal pal’ – only a bunch of hypocritical liberals would think of leaving the new ‘gal pal’ out of the will as unfair. To me it is simple – she wasn’t there when he earned it – she does not deserve a piece of it. At. All.

Leave it to liberals to equate everything into money. Relationships are not about love, sex, emotions, feelings or commitment – but rather about what money you can get from it. But always and most especially – someone else’s money

Why would Red Walter even consider taking care of her?

Isn’t that what the government is for?

Glad you posted who she was, or rather who she is related to, as I wouldn’t have known. I guess Uncle Wally’s kids said to her …. and that’s the way it is.

The Gal Pal is so vain, she probably thinks that will is about her, with apologies to her sister’s song about Mick Jagger or Warren Beatty.
