WaPo Chortles: Lois Lerner Joins An Exclusive Club

From an amused Washington Post:

Lois Lerner joins an exclusive club

By Ed O’Keefe | May 7, 2014

The House of Representatives voted 231 to 187 Wednesday to hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress —

And this news warrants the WP’s cutesy headline. After all, what is more fun than the a top IRS official abusing her powers for partisan purposes?

[A] long-anticipated vote that came just a few days short of the one-year anniversary of Lerner’s first apology for the tax agency’s decision to improperly target and investigate conservative-leaning tax-exempt political organizations…

She apologized. So lay off!

If ever convicted, Lerner could face between one and 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $100,000. She now joins more than a dozen senior government officials held in contempt by congressional committees in the last four decades for either lying to lawmakers or refusing to cooperate with congressional investigations.

The list includes former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who was held in contempt by the House Intelligence Committee in 1975 over refusal to share information regarding Soviet compliance with an arms agreement. Former Labor Secretary Joseph A. Califano, former Energy secretaries Charles Duncan and James Edwards, former Attorney General Janet Reno and former White House Counsel Jack Quinn also were held in contempt by committees…

Funny how the WP left Eric Holder off the list. A detail they only get around to noting 15 paragraphs later.

They also left off a lot of Republicans who the Democrats have held in contempt for truly frivolous reasons.

The House voted in June 2012 to make Holder the first sitting attorney general held in contempt of Congress. He had withheld documents that Republican lawmakers demanded as part of an investigation into a flawed gun-running operation known as "Fast and Furious." More than 100 House Democrats abstained from the vote.

Holder later described the vote as “the regrettable culmination of what became a misguided — and politically motivated — investigation during an election year.” He accused Republicans leading the investigation of focusing “on politics over public safety.” …

Which is something Eric Holder would never do. (Fast & Furious, releasing illegal alien detainees with criminal records, etc.)

Let’s dispense with the trial. Let’s dispense with any jail time. Let’s end any talk of deals, and immunity. Let Lois go free. The cost of her betrayal of the American people should be the loss of ANY government money in the form of pension/retirement/compensation or any future public sector job.

As a punishment, it doesn’t cost us anything, and it sends a message to the political class that if they screw up, they lose their golden parachute. If you hit them in the wallet, and eliminate any chance that they’ll ever be in a position of power again, they might at least take notice. As it stands, Lois is going to retire a rich woman, she will continue to be paid with OUR money for the rest of her miserable existence, and will never spend a single day in jail. And the process to get us to that point will cost millions in wasted time and money.
