Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

It’s become a bit of a tradition here to post President George Washington’s Thanksgiving Day proclamation around this time of year:

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness :”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted’ for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Happy Thanksgiving to our extended Sweetness & Light family!

And God bless the United States, our brave soldiers around the world, our elected leaders (well, some of them), and people striving for freedom everywhere!

    Happy Thanksgiving, all.
And Godspeed to all the US servicemen and women overseas.

  2. We live in uncertain, tumultuous times. But, then again, I’m sure every generation has expressed that concern. It simply seems to be all the more accelerated & aggressive in this new millennium.

My daughter is finally discharged from the army after three tours in Iraq; my son-in-law is just staring his tour in Afghanistan. Wars and rumors of wars… and lots of prayer, phone calls and emails.

Yes. God bless the United States. But will the US of A honor God?

Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks. I wonder if most folks know who that gratitude should be directed?

    Happy Thanksgiving, one and all.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here and remember that”Black Friday” has a special meaning to those of you in the inner cities or near them. Last year the WallMarts and other stores had sales that turned into melees over big screen TVs and other items that were not worth the lives of one human. Unless you think that you be owed!

Why do you think they call it, “Black Friday” anyway?
(just an observation on LDs’ part)

    Enjoy the day S&L’ers.

The tide is turning against the eager emperors who are pounding us over the head to rule us.

Their assumption that we are all slack-jawed village idiots who have been lusting for years for more direction from Harvard egg-heads isn’t working out exactly as planned.

Their agenda is in deep do-do.

And if they manage to pass it, the guillotines are being sharpened.

1 more year with the Boy King flailing around, and then he will be relegated to doing the 3 things he does best: acting like a big shot, splurging on himself with our money, and making a fool of himself.

Then we can begin the 20-year effort to undo the damage he has wrought in his first 10 months.

Happy thanksgiving to all you brave purveyors of free speech and liberal discourse (yes, it’s about time we stop letting the Left claim the word “liberal,” which in actuality means openness to free exchange of perspectives.)

I was lucky enough to escape for a few days and spend the holidays with my lovely wife and daughter, for which I am extremely grateful! I will be thinking of you all as I dive headlong into training and ship off to Afghanistan next year. Keep the faith and never relent in your tireless search of truth and free debate.

God bless America & you all,
    Bobby
