Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

It’s become a tradition this time of year here to post President George Washington’s Thanksgiving Day proclamation, which gave thanks to God for our nation’s newly enacted Constitution:

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted’ for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Happy Thanksgiving to our extended Sweetness & Light family!

And God bless the United States, our brave soldiers around the world — and people striving for freedom everywhere!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving Steve, et al..

I give thanks for much, but nowhere at the end of the list is S&L. God Bless.

Wishing Steve Gilbert and his family, the very very best of Thanksgiving. I doubt any of us really know how much work and $$$ goes into making us a place to vent our spleens.

The United States of America is absolutely the best nation that has ever been, and you and I are winners of the Best of Everything Lottery by being born here as natural citizens. Few of us have ever known real want; few have known the despair of family or self desperately ill or injured with absolutely no hope of getting to even rudimentary medical care; few of us have ever been truly without shelter; few of us know what it’s like to need clean water and no way to get it, power and have none, or have known what it is to be chased with murderous intent by tribes who hate you just because. Our lives are unlike 90% of the world.

We live in a land of milk and honey, peace and plenty, a land guarded by the finest military men and women in the history of the world. Watched over by strong men on patrol every night in our towns and cities. A nation still imbued with morality and decent fair play.

My Thankfulness can run to ten pages, twenty pages, probably book-length, but here’s the nut of it –

My most sincere thankfulness is reserved for Almighty God who saw fit for me to be Here, Now. And to call me to the knowledge of His Son Jesus, our Christ. Everything else is gravy.

My heartfelt wishes to all here present for a joyous remembrance this day for all with which we’ve been blessed.

      Right on GetBackJack.

As you say, at birth we had already won the lottery. Anybody who can’t see it is a fool of the highest order.

Steve and S&L are part of the winnings.

Wholeheartedly agree with all your sentiments Jack – especially “everything else is gravy.”

Would also like to wish Steve and his family a very happy Thanksgiving as well as my fellow sojourners on S&L.

What…no mention of the INDIANS who saw the evil white man through his first difficult winters?? Apparently Washington was not familiar with CNN!

Thanksgiving to Steve for the definition of true Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. of America. Everyone in this country should read it.

It is concrete our forefathers saw this as a land of freedom for their ancestors. Not by my might, or your might, but the Might of God were we blessed to be citizens of this country. America’s forefathers died along the travel; died that first winter and many to follow. Great sacrifice was made to keep America one Nation under God. A guaranteed freedom to worship God has been taken away from us by government, school government, and individuals such as the muslim or communist. Our forefather’s left us a gift meant to
be run as one nation under their true Almighty God.

Here it is Thanksgiving a U.S. National Holiday and I googled “the pilgrimage” to find something on
the first Thanksgiving dinner, the struggle American settlers went through, and do to popularity of the Thanksgiving Holiday. I should not have immediately googled up links the muslim koran scriptures and Mecca pilgrimage chapter 22. It clearly shows the muslim pilgrimage is an anti-Christian and anti-Jewish
    religious exercise.

Koran pilgrimage scriptures starting at 22.1

Noted the use of “We” by the muslims who wrote the koran.
ex. We revealed… We assigned… We have made.. We will make… We (para) determine if a life in the womb will be born or stay a chunk of flesh

The most alarming verses are these in which Islam names their 2 greatest enemies & adversaries: Christians and Jews.

[22.17] Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associate (others with Allah)– surely Allah will decide between them on the day of resurrection; surely Allah is a witness over all things.

[22.19] These are two adversaries who dispute about their Lord; then (as to) those who disbelieve, for them are cut out garments of fire, boiling water shall be poured over their heads.
[22.20] With it shall be melted what is in their bellies and (their) skins as well.

[22.27] And proclaim among men the Pilgrimage: they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every remote path,….

Sweetness & Light is a blessing to me and to the U.S. of America. I have learned so much from Sweetness & Light and everyone that posts. I know mine aren’t too cheering and appreciate the toleration by everyone here. I love you all. God Bless you all.

I would also like to take the time to give thanks to God and ya’ll for being here. Your insight helps me keep my sanity just knowing that ya’ll are out there fighting the fight for our country. When you know, you know. It is the Truth that God blessed our founders with the will and fortitude to create a bastion of freedom and liberty for all. The biggest fight is upon us now and we are beset on all fronts by the evil islam. I pray daily that I can just do the next right thing and help when asked. And I ditto canary when it is said that I love you all and God Bless.
