Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

It’s become a tradition this time of year here to post President George Washington’s Thanksgiving Day proclamation, which gave thanks to God for our nation’s newly enacted Constitution:

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted’ for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Happy Thanksgiving to our extended Sweetness & Light family!

And God bless the United States, our brave soldiers around the world — and people striving for freedom everywhere!

This is why our revolution succeeded and why we were once great. Our faith and gratitude kept us humble.

Because we no longer believe in any gods other than power, money, technology, reason; and have lost gratitude – replacing it with a sense of entitlement – we are sinking into a new Dark Age.

“We are no longer humble, and have no reason to be proud.”

Few put it as well as Washington.

Our esteemed host is one of those few.

Thank you so much for continuing to lead the charge, Steve.

The light is not gone yet. We shall perservere through the storms and overcome should it be through His Will and Grace.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our wise soldier bees and worker bees. Bless you all. I’m so grateful and personally relieved to be among such good people in such backwards times.

    Happy Thanksgiving, all.

Good Night, Mr. Washington! You have served your Nation well, and many times. Few have said so much, in such brief manner. It was not for novelty. It was in your heart. Those seeds have take’n root. Now, it’s time to pay attention to the crop.

At this Thanksgiving season, I wish to thank our brilliant, witty, and hard-working host, Steve Gilbert, for making me a home at S&L. Thank you, Steve. A donation is en route.

Second, I wish also to thank the straight-shooting contributors who have kept my spirits up during the last year : proreason, tranquil.night, Liberals Demise, Rusty, GBJ, jobeth, ROP, Mithrandir, canary, artboy, mr_bill, untrainable, beautyofreason, BigOil, JohnMG, Reality Bytes, Melly, and all the rest of you posters and readers at S&L. Thanks for being there.

For I have come to consider you my friends. Please keep those guns blazing.

And finally, I wish to thank the gold-friendly geniuses at the Fed, the US Treasury Department, and especially Nerobama, his Bolshevik robber gangs in the Congress, his czars and thugs throughout the Federal bureaucracy and the judiciary, his goons in the labor unions, and his minions in the news media, whose longstanding political ambitions are at last being realized by their proletarianization of America into a land of unemployed, propertyless, and government-dependent serfs, whose hard-line ideological extremism, radical (and yet entirely predictable) socialist spending programs, cram-downs, and abuses of power, whose massive debt-creation, money-creation and monetization of debt, whose fiat currency, interest rate manipulations, bailouts, take-overs, quantitative easings, stimuli, deficits, confiscations, seizures, shakedowns, redistributions, transfer payments, ear marks, extravagances, corruptions, thefts, frauds, lies, impostures, schemes, bribes, payoffs, cover-ups, smears, deceptions, tax increases, drilling moratoriums, pipeline veto, shut-downs, extortions, looting, threats, insults, impudences, class warfare demagoguery, bullying, and tirades, and whose near-destruction of the Engine of the World [pause for deep breath …],

whose sophistry, illegalities, regulatory overkill, obstructionism, bungling, prodigality, self-indulgence, fannying about, and gross incompetence, whose betrayal of old allies and appeasement of foes, whose contempt for the US Constitution, for the Federal system, and for all laws, precedents, statutes, rights, liberties, and customs, whose shredding of the very fabric of the American constitution (here I mean constitution in the broad sense, including the whole way of life of the state), whose uncompromising ideological hostility to Western Civilization in general, and whose obstinate refusal to listen to the pleas and outcries of suffering from the outraged American people, while blaming all of his failures on George W. Bush and on us his “enemies,” have made possible an historic bull market in gold and silver, Swiss francs, and Australian dollars.

On behalf of conservative investors everywhere, I, Gaius Petronius Arbiter, thank you for this unprecedented opportunity to profit from the effects on the markets of your enormous crimes against America.

    Ceterum censeo hostem esse delendum.

  6. sticks says:

Happy thanksgiving, merry christmass and a God blessed year to you all who have given me a home to stay, lots to think about and a reason to be proud of America in spite of her flaws. Special prayers for Steve who is a brilliant commentator and one who I’m sure works like a slave to keep things going. The “going” is though at this point as Petronius makes clear, but only death can stop us, untill then we battle on.

  7. xdannyh says:

WOW!…… a stunned silence of reflection……. I think Petronius covered them all at least I can’t think of another and they are all crimes against the constitution and rational thought. Now if the Republicans don’t repeat these words in print and verbally at every electioneering opportunity from now to Nov. 2012 , then they are as indifferent or dumb as they appear to be.
