Weinstein Edited Osama Movie To Boost Obama

From the New York Times:

Editing Bolsters Obama’s Role in SEALs Film

Obama Is Prominent in ‘SEAL Team Six,’ Weinstein Film

By MICHAEL CIEPLY and BRIAN STELTER | Tues October 23, 2012

LOS ANGELES — Thanks to the magic of editing, President Obama will have a starring role in a television drama about one of his biggest accomplishments — the killing of Osama bin Laden — that will be shown just two nights before the presidential election.

But the star turn is virtually certain to bolster claims that the approximately 90-minute film amounts to a political stunt.

Who could be so cynical as to think that?

Set for a prime-time debut on Nov. 4 on the National Geographic Channel, and a release the next day on Netflix, the film — “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” — is being backed by Harvey Weinstein, a longtime Democratic contributor and one of the Obama campaign’s most vigorous backers. Mr. Weinstein bought the rights to the film for about $2.5 million at the Cannes festival in May

But promotional materials and a copy of the movie provided to The New York Times this week also show that the film has been recut, using news and documentary footage to strengthen Mr. Obama’s role and provide a window into decision-making in the White House.

Lest we forget, when the news of this TV movie first surfaced we were told that Obama would not even be mentioned. But that was then, and this is now.

In a joint interview on Tuesday Mr. Weinstein; the film’s director, John Stockwell; and others said the changes to the film were not politically motivated but were meant to give the film a stronger sense of realism.

Some of the Obama moments were added at the suggestion of Mr. Weinstein, they said, using material gathered by Meghan O’Hara, a producer who worked closely with the documentarian Michael Moore on politically charged projects like “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Sicko.”

So you know it will be more realistic — and not at all political.

But Mr. Stockwell said he had included Mr. Obama as a character in his film from the beginning, and had actually shrunk his screen time somewhat. And Howard T. Owens, the chief executive of the National Geographic Channel, who joined the call, said his company had insisted on removing a scene that showed Mitt Romney appearing to oppose the raid.

Now that is fairness! They removed a scene that never happened. Congratulations.

“We wouldn’t air this if it were propaganda,” he said.

By the way, according to the FEC’s records a Howard T. Owens of Los Angeles contributed to the Barack Obama campaign in 2008. And it is his only political contribution.

The scenes featuring Mr. Obama include an opening with him at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner just a day before the raid (which was added by Ms. O’Hara); another that catches him on a long, lonely walk as he presumably deliberates his weighty decision; and — without getting too deeply into spoilers — another that finds him declaring at the end, “Justice has been done.”

Mr. Obama and his camp offered no input in the making or timing of the film, Mr. Weinstein and Mr. Owens said…

Why would they need to?

Mr. Stockwell, whose directing credits include the horror film “Turistas” and the surf drama “Blue Crush,” said that Mr. Weinstein, after buying the movie, “came into the edit room” and suggested a revision that “gave the movie context and helped root it in reality.” …

And never mind that editing a movie after it had been edited by its director is usually considered to be the ultimate sin in Hollywood.

Beyond the political issues, the film may carry the risk of associating Mr. Obama with any backlash in a Muslim world already inflamed by the YouTube trailer for an insulting film portrayal of its prophet. In September riots erupted in Libya, Egypt and elsewhere as Muslim crowds reacted violently to what they perceived as the unforgivable insults of a scratch production, “The Innocence of Muslims,” some of which was posted on YouTube.

Nothing in “SEAL Team Six” recalls the anti-Muslim tones of that film. But the new film’s portrayals of the jeopardy to Muslim children during the assault on Bin Laden’s compound, and its graphic references to — but not portrayals of — torture in the war on terror may step toward the risk zone.

So Obama’s constant crowing about killing Bin Laden and defeating Al Qaeda won’t home to roost — again?

Even though it will be seen by millions around the world via the National Geographic Channel and Netflix. And even though it will shows Muslims being killed by Americans.

Still, to be fair, only an idiot would blame Muslim violence on a movie.

They’d better alert the embassies world wide. Once this film showing Americans killing Mooselimbs is aired there will be thousands of protests (peaceful of course, Islam is the Religion of Pieces).

  2. canary says:

The movie was edited to make Romney look bad.

I won’t watch it. I’ll wait decades til a more accurate movie comes out where Obama tried to get rid of the CIA male and female agent that could not get Obama and his administration capture him.

  3. GetBackJack says:

I have grave reservations that Tim Osman was killed the night of the raid Obama wants to get credit for.

I sincerely believe our military and intelligence services gave Obama a head fake so they could get someone else.

Because Osama bin Dead of kidney failure since about the time of Tora Bora.

Well, Obama falsely took credit saying he got Al-Qaida #2. It was wrong to dump his body in the sea. That Navy Seal said Osama bin Laden looked much younger than he thought, and he had just died his beard. The pics we saw weren’t a young died looking guy with a brown beard. And the woman CIA agent didn’t want to see him after the Seals killed him, and then when she did he wrote she got in the fetal position and sobbed and sobbed. Strange she spent years hunting him down, and didn’t want to see him and cried.

Either way we deserved to see a video and a let more see him before they dumped him into the sea.

During Desert Storm there were rumors that Saddam Hussein had look a likes, men who had plastic surgery to look like him.

Oh, and none of the CIA Puncture Shots the Seals used to get bone for DNA testing failed so as their lives were in danger they just ragged his mouth and took a piece of his bloody clothing or something like that.

Obama announced withdrawing troops the minute he became president. All those CIA agents that were blown up, and then he tries to take out the CIA agents from Bush who instead of leaving, went into deep undercover and waited til they were sure because every time they told Panetta they’d let him go.

It’s clear in Obama’s 2006 book he writes that Osama bin Laden is held up in a cave somewhere and can’t hurt anyone.

And all the leaks that came out during the night were a lot of b.s.

We deserve to see the video. Every soldier that fought over there deserves to see the video.
The families of those killed 9/11 deserve to see it for closure.
