Welfare Head, Joe The Plumber Spy Resigns

From a heartbroken Associated Press:

Agency Director Resigns After Spying on ‘Joe the Plumber’ on State Computers

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Department of Job and Family Services Director Helen Jones-Kelley quit after accusations arose that she improperly used state computers to access personal information on "Joe the Plumber."

CINCINNATI — An Ohio agency director resigned Wednesday in the wake of a finding that she improperly used state computers to access personal information on the man who became known as "Joe the Plumber" during the presidential campaign…

Department of Job and Family Services Director Helen Jones-Kelley said in a statement accompanying her resignation that she won’t allow her reputation to be disparaged and that she is concerned for her family’s safety.

"This decision comes after a time of pause, in which I realize that I continue to be used as a political postscript, providing a distraction from urgent state priorities," she said in her statement…

Gov. Ted Strickland suspended Jones-Kelley for a month without pay after the Ohio Inspector General’s office found in November that she improperly used state computers to find personal information on Samuel Wurzelbacher. The investigation also found that she conducted improper political fundraising activity for now President-elect Barack Obama

Investigators could not confirm that Jones-Kelley accessed the records of Wurzelbacher with political gain in mind. His report did indicate that she had used her personal Blackberry to send the Obama fundraising requests — though it was synched up to state equipment

Two top-level members of Jones-Kelley’s staff also will be leaving the department, said agency spokeswoman Scarlett Bouder.

Fred Williams, the department’s assistant director, will resign effective Jan. 31 and the agency is revoking Doug Thompson’s position as deputy director of child support effective Dec. 22, she said.

Both had been suspended from their positions after being implicated in the computer records search.

Ohio lawmakers are expected to pass a bill Thursday that requires state agencies to determine proper circumstances for records to be checked and to authorize only specific individuals to perform those checks.

Unsurprisingly, this AP report actually plays down the extent to which Ms. Jones-Kelley suffered from Obama-mania.

Besides contributing the maximum amount to his run, Ms. Jones-Kelley also sent the campaign a list of potential contributors, before their visit to the area.

She also offered to host a party for the wondrous Michelle. – All via the state’s computers.

(Indeed, one wonders where she got the list of potential contributors.)

And of course, on top of that, she had used the state computers and employees to do opposition research on Mr. Wurzelbacher – for his crime of asking a question to the Anointed One.

Yet she was not fired. She has decided to resign. To protect her reputation and family.

And probably to pave the way for an even higher paying job in the Obama administration.

(Thanks to BillK for the heads up.)

How long before this woman is canonized and she’s invited to appear at the coronation, er, inaugural?

    Why she’s simply concerned:

I realize that I continue to be used as a political postscript, providing a distraction from urgent state priorities

A political postscript – she just violated state law to investigate a man who did nothing more than ask Obama a question.

What good is a government job if you can’t use it to destroy your political opponents?

That is, other than that you can’t be fired, get the best pension in the world (at taxpayer expense) that adjusts for inflatiion, never work overtime, don’t have to be qualified, get to ignore customer service, have no competition, get guaranteed raises, and get to accrue vacation time forever.

  3. Gila Monster says:

To h*ll with letting her resign, she should have been fired immediately for violating Wurzelbacher’s civil rights.

The leniency by the government regarding this political hack job just astounds me. IMHO, this is one of the major problems we have with our government at nearly every level. Excluding the military, far too many of our government workers show an obvious disdain for something as simple as ethics.

Say you worked for corporation XYZ and you got caught releasing private or proprietary information about an individual on the internet on company time. Do you really think your employer would just suspend you for a short period? Hell no, you would be shown the door immediately with a boot up you a** for good measure.

Hey, maybe my expectations are a bit high but this is just utter BS.

Hopefully, Joe the plumbers’ helper, can sue this bi-atch into the welfare ranks she once held supreme grip on. With the Governor out of the way and all the other civil rights abusers out on their ear, justice may reign….finally!! Hey joe….take everything, leave nothing of value!!

In stark contrast when I worked at a NASA facility, they monitor keystrokes to ensure (among other things) that employees are not contacting members of congress using NASA computers. Perhaps one reason that there is so much fraud in the welfare system is that the entire culture of the government offices running those programs are hot beds of corruption.

Here we go again. Does she admit doing something wrong or apologize for it? No. Instead she plays the victim here. Her reputation being is disparaged and “she is concerned for her family’s safety.”

How about someone looking into your records Ms. Helen Jones-Kelley. Let’s make public how many times you’ve been to the clinic and see if you’re cool with that.

Nope, just like everyone who gets fired or caught doing something they shouldn’t (John Edwards) they say, “Family, family family safety, spend more time, family family family, me me my family, privacy, family family family…. moving forward, family me family in-the-past, family me me me victim….family. ”

She has been, “Thrust into the spotlight.” Maybe we should check her tax status, child support status, medical history, computer logs, criminal history, car registration, past drug use, FBI check, property check, student loans check, along with all members of her immediate and extended family.

See how she likes it when someone hunts her down, and prevents her from future employment.

      brad
I started my life in that environment. I could watch parents(?) curse and beat their children but when the cameras showed up it was all about “my children” and “my family”. It’s one thing to pick a political side of an argument but another to live the truth.

But sometimes (when we let our guard down) confidence in our experience brings us back to being naive. I didn’t escape that environment but only ran from it. Now I know it’s consuming all of us.

“And probably to pave the way for an even higher paying job in the Obama administration”

That was also my initial thought, along with playing the typical “victim” role by insinuating that her family is in danger, what a croc of Barry flavored kool-aid.

I am not a litigious person, but I too think that Joe the citizen should sue the crap out of all of those government workers – right on up to the governor for not firing this person.

  8. wardmama4 says:

I won’t believe that her family has/is being threatened until I see them – Come on pony up Ms Jones-Kelly. You saw no problem with investigating Joe Citizen and allowing all found items to become front page news – let’s have it. All of it.

Yeah I thought so – you all can dish it out without a second thought, but can’t take the backlash when the proverbial doodoo hits the fan.

The left are mean, intolerant cowards.

They shouldn’t be dog catchers much less running this country.

We have the wanna-be Master of the Universe and his Queen of Mean about to take over.

    God Help America.

Lose their jobs? That’s it? That is the punishment for corruption on the public dime and time? THAT MEANS NOTHING! The golden parachute will enable ALL these Obama supporters to get jobs at the NAACP, or some other activist group. Their loyalty and sacrifice to the chosen one will not go un-noticed. I hope S&W will keep us updated on where these people wind-up next, I will be right.

I loved the line, “Our offices routinely check up on people “thrust into the public limelight” to see if they owe child support etc.”

What sense does that make? And besides, people checked, and THERE IS NO such policy enabling these people to do such stupid things for such stupid reasons.

MARK MY WORDS—Golden Parachutes await…..watch and see. . . . (google their names every few weeks or so and check)

“…she won’t allow her reputation to be disparaged ”
This is my favorite part. Pssst! Helen, nobody knew who you were before this. You have no reputation other than this one! This is why you’re ALWAYS supposed to be honest, because you can become famous for the time(s) you’re not, and no one will ask your permission.

  11. curvyred says:

Since Ms. Jones-Kelly is now in the news – shouldn’t someone at the welfare deparment be looking into her records? After all that is what they claimed they do, turnabout is flair play.
