WH: It’s A Shame Phony Signer Is A Distraction

From the Politico:

W.H.: A ‘shame’ phony signer distracts from Mandela service

By REID J. EPSTEIN | December 11, 2013

The White House said it is “a shame” that a phony sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service is distracting from the celebration of Mandela’s life…

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday referred questions to South Africa’s government and the U.S. Secret Service.

The buck never stops at the White House.

“It’s not clear to me that this person mistranslated the president at all,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Wednesday.

Well, a White House flack would know whether someone was doing a correct sign language translation from one of South Africa’s eleven official languages.

“The point is that he was apparently not translating him into anything and was enjoying the opportunity to be on the stage.”

The interpreter, who South African media reported has been present at prior events with African National Congress officials, has yet to be identified.

Mr. Earnest was probably speaking before he had been identified and even interviewed by the AP.

Like others on stage with Obama, the sign language interpreter would have been cleared by the Secret Service, but American officials would not necessarily have vetted his sign language skills, according to people who have planned past presidential events.

Well, it’s clear the Secret Service didn’t spend too much time vetting him, or they would have learned that he has been criticized for faking in the past. Which should have alerted them to his history of mental illness and his violent past. Especially, since he doesn’t seem to be any too shy about admitting it.
