WH: Shutdown Cost $6B (So Let’s End Vacations)

From USA Today:

White House: Shutdown cost billions in productivity

By Aamer Madhani | November 7, 2013

Last month’s partial federal government shutdown cost taxpayers as much $6 billion in lost productivity and resulted in federal workers missing a cumulative 6.6 million workdays, according to a report released Thursday by the White House Office of Management and Budget…

Remember, this was a partial shutdown, that only furloughed (at its height) 17% of government employees.

By comparison, the budget office estimated in 1996 that the two shutdowns in late 1995 and early 1996, which lasted 26 days total, cost the government $1.4 billion, or roughly $2.1 billion in today’s dollars…

Which just tells us that the Obama administration are three times bigger liars than even the Clinton administration.

Among the findings:

• The shutdown delayed almost $4 billion in tax refunds and will delay the start of the 2014 tax filing season by up to two weeks.

But somehow it didn’t delay the IRS sending out collection notices. Why is that?

• Hundreds of patients were prevented from enrolling in National Institutes of Health clinical trials.
• Communities lost $500 million in spending in their communities as a result of shuttered National Parks.

All of which could been easily prevented. And were prevented in the 17 previous shut downs.

Fourth-quarter GDP growth is expected to be 0.6% lower than it could have been had the shutdown and debt ceiling battles of last month not taken place, according to the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

BS. The 1995 and 1996 didn’t have any affect on the GDP.

But let’s pretend to believe these numbers from the White House about how much the 16 day partial (17%) government shutdown cost. We have an easy solution: Federal employees get 10 paid vacations during the year. On top of that, government offices are regularly closed for snow days. And these days off affect a lot more than just 17% of the employees.

So our solution is: cancel all of those vacations and snow days until the money is made up. In fact, we will go further. Cancel vacations and snow days for the rest of time, and the government will save untold billions of taxpayer dollars. In fact, this will balance the budget in no time, which is what everyone says they want.

Solvey-Solvey.
