WH Unaware Of New $34M US HQ In Afghanistan

First we have this from a selectively outraged Washington Post:

A brand-new U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan. And nobody to use it.

By Rajiv Chandrasekaran | July 10, 2013

The U.S. military has erected a 64,000-square-foot headquarters building on the dusty moonscape of southwestern Afghanistan that comes with all the tools to wage a modern war. A vast operations center with tiered seating. A briefing theater. Spacious offices. Fancy chairs. Powerful air conditioning. Everything, that is, except troops.

The windowless, two-story structure, which is larger than a football field, was completed this year at a cost of $34 million. But the military has no plans to ever use it. Commanders in the area, who insisted three years ago that they did not need the building, now are in the process of withdrawing forces and see no reason to move into the new facility…

According to other reports, this building is the most expensive building in Afghanistan.

For many senior officers, the unused headquarters has come to symbolize the staggering cost of Pentagon mismanagement: As American troops pack up to return home, U.S.-funded contractors are placing the finishing touches on projects that are no longer required or pulling the plug after investing millions of dollars.

In Kandahar province, the U.S. military recently completed a $45 million facility to repair armored vehicles and other complex pieces of equipment. The space is now being used as a staging ground to sort through equipment that is being shipped out of the country.

In northern Afghanistan, the State Department last year abandoned plans to occupy a large building it had intended to use as a consulate. After spending more than $80 million and signing a 10-year lease, officials determined the facility was too vulnerable to attacks…

Notice the conspicuous lack of blame for Obama here. If this was happening under President Bush we suspect there would be plenty of blame assigned.

The top Marine commander in Helmand sent a memo to the U.S. headquarters in Kabul three years ago stating that the new structure was unnecessary. But his assessment was ignored or disregarded by officers issuing contracts for construction projects, according to senior military officials familiar with the issue…

The headquarters has its origin in 2009, when President Obama decided to surge more troops to southern Afghanistan to beat back Taliban insurgents…

When Marine officers in Helmand heard of the plans, they objected. The commander at the time, then-Maj. Gen. Richard P. Mills, believed his plywood-walled headquarters was sufficient and made that clear to his superiors in Kabul. His assessment went unheeded…

But but we are supposed to now believe that Obama and his lackeys know nothing about this waste. Even though this article was featured on the front page of the Washington Post.

From Fox News:

What Boondoggle? Carney unaware of $34M military HQ troops won’t use

July 11, 2013

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney apparently isn’t reading his hometown paper… [A]sked on Thursday whether President Obama was outraged by the waste, Carney said he hadn’t heard anything about it.

"I would have to take the question. I haven’t seen the report," Carney said.

He added: "But we’re obviously outraged by wasteful spending in general  — again, I’m not aware of this report, or any specifics about the base that you described." …

Obama hates wasteful spending so much he can’t be bothered to stop it.

Of course, in reality, Democrats must love wasteful spending. Otherwise we wouldn’t have so much of it.

  1. Liberals Demise

Um …….. IRS, DOJ, NSA, FBI, HHS, ATF, HOMELAND SECURITY, etal.
When it comes to money or ANYTHING else, the sheeple must be herded for our own good.
And lied to multiple times daily.
Where is the outrage for the lifestyle these pigs are leading?
$100 million for a trip to dingleBarrys fatherland for what?
    Leadership?
    I think not!

It would be interesting to see which contractors built
this and how much they contributed to the Democrats.
Follow the money, or the woman. Perhaps the ‘ghans
can keep their camels cool, or store their drug harvest.

  3. War is the perfect opportunity to spend other people’s money. Some of which falls through the cracks. Always has, always will.

That said, I’d like to hear not this shiat, but that this Administration has ordered the deployment of DARPA’s micro-herbicidal aerial spray which kills lachryma papaveris, and only lachryma papaveris … from which tears of the poppy is reduced.

    Opium.

It not only kills the plant, but salts the ground so lachryma papaveris cannot grow on that patch of land for over a decade. It 100% will kill the Opium Warlord business once and for all. Kill the opium kill terrorism. Which includes the Democrat Party.

But no. We have to be deflected and distracted by news of an unused building, probably sequestered to begin with.

Dumb Army Spokesman – “That building is integral to the success of our mission. It was specifically designed to …” (mic cuts off)
Smart DOD Spokesperson – “This is Bush’s fault and we want nothing to do with Halliburton.”
