Where Are Your Transcripts, Mr. Obama?

From The New York Sun:

Obama’s Years at Columbia Are a Mystery

He Graduated Without Honors

By ROSS GOLDBERG, Special to the Sun | September 2, 2008

Senator Obama’s life story, from his humble roots, to his rise to Harvard Law School, to his passion as a community organizer in Chicago, has been at the center of his presidential campaign. But one chapter of the tale remains a blank — his education at Columbia College, a place he rarely speaks about and where few people seem to remember him.

Contributing to the mystery is the fact that nobody knows just how well Mr. Obama, unlike Senator McCain and most other major candidates for the past two elections, performed as a student.

The Obama campaign has refused to release his college transcript, despite an academic career that led him to Harvard Law School and, later, to a lecturing position at the University of Chicago. The shroud surrounding his experience at Columbia contrasts with that of other major party nominees since 2000, all whom have eventually released information about their college performance or seen it leaked to the public.

For better or worse, voters have taken an interest in candidates’ grades since 1999, when the New Yorker published President Bush’s transcript at Yale and disclosed that he was a C student. Mr. Bush had never portrayed himself as a brain, but many were surprised to learn the next year that his opponent, Vice President Gore, did not do much better at Harvard despite his intellectual image. When Senator Kerry’s transcript surfaced, reporters found that he actually had a slightly lower average at Yale than Mr. Bush did

The Obama campaign declined to comment for this article and did not offer an explanation for why his transcript has not been released. But observers speculated that one reason might be the racially charged nature of the election. Mr. Obama has acknowledged benefiting from affirmative action in the past, and details about his academic performance might open him up to critics eager to accuse him, probably unfairly, of receiving a free ride, Mr. Kabaservice said…

In contrast with the rest of Mr. Obama’s life story, little is known about his college experience. He attended Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years before transferring to Columbia in 1981. The move receives only a mention in Mr. Obama’s 1995 memoir, “Dreams from My Father,” which instead devotes that chapter to his impressions of race and class struggles in New York.

An article in a Columbia University publication, Columbia College Today, reported that Mr. Obama has portrayed Columbia as a period of buckling down following a troubled adolescence. He did not socialize much, he has said, instead spending a lot of time in the library, “like a monk.” He has also stated that he was involved to some extent with the Black Students Organization.

Federal law limits the information that Columbia can release about Mr. Obama’s time there. A spokesman for the university, Brian Connolly, confirmed that Mr. Obama spent two years at Columbia College and graduated in 1983 with a major in political science. He did not receive honors, Mr. Connolly said, though specific information on his grades is sealed. A program from the 1983 graduation ceremony lists him as a graduate…

This otherwise commendable article fails to note numerous other questions about Mr. Obama’s academic record. Questions we have repeatedly raised.

For instance, we do not know for certain what Mr. Obama studied in his undergraduate days. He claims he majored in “international affairs,” which seems a bit unlikely for an undergraduate.

And, as the article states, his degree from Columbia is in political science — not international affairs.

Moreover, we do not know why he was accepted into these schools in the first place. Obama himself has suggested he did not have the grades to meet their requirements.

By his own admission, Obama spent his final two years in high school skipping classes, playing basketball, doing cocaine and getting drunk.

Similarly, his admission to Harvard Law school is highly questionable. Where are his LSAT scores? And how does one graduate from Columbia without honors and yet get accepted at Harvard Law?

Lastly, his ascendency to the Presidency of the Harvard Law school would appear to have also been a case of blatant affirmative action, since the student Obama had only written one legal paper — and that was quite short and remarkably undistinguished.

So where are his grade transcripts? So where is the honest and open leadership that Mr. Obama has promised us?

I’m still trying to figure out how Obama got into Occidental.
Being somewhat familiar with their admissions, it’s not like getting into San Diego State. Occidental is a small, expensive private school with high admission standards. By his own admission, Obama goofed off for his last two years of high school.
Why doesn’t he release his academic records?
What were his grades at Occidental? Honor roll? How did he get into Columbia? How did he get into Harvard?

Our little Obamy has twinkled toed his way through life in a number of respects, not just in his admittances to Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard.

He never seems to have earned any significant money at any point in his life (until millions of people and George Soros found his self-serving autobiography compelling summer reading), but still managed to live pretty well by any standard.

Somehow he found the money to support booze, drugs, cigarettes, travel, the lovely missus, the two mistakes and an awesome wardrobe. Then there is the most amazing book advance(s) for an unpublished
author of all time, the great deal on the Chicago White House next door to Tony Rezko’s lot, the miraculous credit lines and home refinancing, the 300% raise for Thunder Butt for her remarkable work performance immediately after Barry was elected to the US Senate. Somehow, there has always been money.

Yet our little Barry also found time to become the smartest man in the world. Indeed, he was so busy that he didn’t even have time to notice the dozens of radical revolutionaries swirling around him.

      Really, it’s kind of immaculate.

I think it would be great fun to find out that he is a master forger.

I believe that this is something far more sinister that Affirmative action. Manchurian candidate comes to mind.

I don’t buy the Manchurian Candidate idea, at least not completely. I think it’s more intersecting groups with their own agendas. Obama and Ayers, then later the cronies in Chicago, finally the big name Democrats. It stands to reason he would also have already been a well known person with achievements to his name before he would have even run for office. Instead we have a carefully Hoovered background and a come from nowhere persona, thanks to the greatest marketing campaign of all time.

And while we’re on Obama’s blank spots, how come no one ever asks about why he didn’t do any military service? Some of the more vile things that came up about McCain last fall was accusations he “let” himself get captured by the North Vietnamese and therefore wasn’t fit to be the Commander in Chief. And who can forget the obsession in 2004 about “where” Bush was in his National Guard Service? All this finger pointing and accusing while for Obama all you hear is crickets. We all know why they don’t ask, but it’s just a little ironic that people who’ve served in the military or the guard are seen as inferior to someone who’s never done any of it.

“It stands to reason he would also have already been a well known person with achievements to his name before he would have even run for office”

Well, a lot of things stand to reason I guess.

Here is a thorough analysis of his life. http://www.colony14.net/id41.html Not perfectly objective, but it has over 1,000 references if you doubt what it said.

See if you can find any “achievements”, Anonymous, before his first State Senate run at the age of 33.

The facts are that his “achievements” are:

      - running for office
      - 2 autobiographies that some dispute that he wrote
      - a Harvard law degree and being (one of many) editors of the Law Review – with no published papers
      - being a junior law partner for about a year with no paper trail
      - chairmanship of the Annenberg Challenge when he was 33. His job was to give money away. That “charity” was a total failure. He also served on the board of a similar Woods Association. Both roles were given him by Bill Ayers.
      - he was an Acorn trainer and community agitator organizer
      - he lectured part-time about how the Constitution punishes black people at Chicago Law school

So, to summarize, he was a lawyer who never tried a case or published any papers. He was a scholar who never published any scholarship. He was a charity distributer who never made an impact. He was an agitator who was so good at it he became a trainer.

He magically got into schools, magically supported himself, and when he ran for office, his opponents were magically kneecapped.

Those are the “achievements to his name”.

In other words, pro, ‘He’s a Real Nowhere Man’, eh?

I’m not disputing Obama hasn’t been prepped and preened and groomed for the Presidency, I’m also not disputing his resume is as thin as he is.

I just don’t buy the idea he was chosen for the role since his early college years as some sort of Manchurian Candidate. If he had been I would have expected his handlers to have all the blank spaces about him filled out and if anything appearing too well rounded. And yes, he would also have had some achievements, contrived or not, instead of just punching the clock wherever he went.

    • proreason

It’s a valid point, but I think his “career” can be viewed in just the light you suggest.

      Civil Rights Advocate (Community Organizaer)
      Harvard, Law Review,
Partner (junior) civil right law firm,
      Author
      Education Charity CEO
      Constitutional Law lecturer

To a shallow-minded liberal, that looks like an awesome resume.
      - a life dedicated to good works
      - a brilliant man (proved by Harvard)
      - in tune to the primary issues of the day
      - not soiled by unfortunate business experience or military experience

      And combine that with:
      - biracialism
      - “world” experience
      - a big mouth
      - attractive, young person
      - no known sex scandals
      - no convictions

That’s exactly why I think he is a type of Manchurian candidate. You have to look at it from the perspective of a shallow American voter brainwashed by the media and out to get everything he can get from the government, not someone like yourself who pays attention and cares about the country.

He is a creature right out of Shelley’s Obamastein.

But I also know it’s a view that few will accept…….his handlers have made sure of that.

You’re right Pro, I was assuming they would think and question instead of just taking in whatever the talking head says. Cheap beer, it’s all we’ll have left soon…….

Maybe less the the Manchurian Candidate and more Chance Gardener from Being There.
Barak is certainly smarter than that but possibility of someone owning him is not remote. I still question all those millions in internet campaign contributions that supposedly came from poor people sending in dollars. The real question: Who’s pulling the strings?
