Whew – Afghan Bibles Were Destroyed

From those defenders of the faith at Reuters:

U.S. military says Afghan bibles have been destroyed

Tue May 5

KABUL (Reuters) – Bibles in Afghan languages sent to a U.S. soldier at a base in Afghanistan were confiscated and destroyed to ensure that troops did not breach regulations which forbid proselytizing, a military spokeswoman said.

The U.S. military has denied its soldiers tried to convert Afghans to Christianity, after Qatar-based Al Jazeera television showed soldiers at a bible class on a base with a stack of bibles translated into the local Pashto and Dari languages.

U.S. Central Command’s General Order Number 1 forbids troops on active duty — including all those based in Iraq and Afghanistan — from trying to convert people to another religion.

"I can now confirm that the Bibles shown on Al Jazeera’s clip were, in fact, collected by the chaplains and later destroyed. They were never distributed," spokeswoman Major Jennifer Willis said at Bagram air base, north of Kabul.

Military officials have said the bibles were sent through private mail to an evangelical Christian soldier by his church back home. The soldier brought them to the bible study class where they were filmed.

Trying to convert Muslims to another faith is a crime in Afghanistan. An Afghan man who converted to Christianity was sentenced to death for apostasy in 2006 but was allowed to leave the country after an international uproar.

"It certainly is, from the United States military’s perspective, not our position to ever push any specific kind of religion, period," chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen told a Pentagon briefing Monday.

Ah so. Now we understand.

Destroying bibles (no capitalizations) is good

But even allowing infidels to touch the Koran (always capitalized) is the end of the world.

At least according to Islam – and of course its devotees in our one party media.

Well, thank God for those Chaplains who destroyed those bibles. I feel better now.

Proselytizing is forbidden, but it’s ok to die.

According to Islam, the Bible is a holy book, Christ was a prophet, and neither are to be treated with disrespect. While I was living in Pakistan it was forbidden to even put the Bible on the floor because the floor is dirty and the Bible is a holy book. So, I wonder why destroying the Bibles is considered the appropriate thing to do. I also wonder when people will come to realize that a religion that preaches love, life, and freedom to choose is far supperior to a religion that preaches death, dominance, and hate.
Of course I want to convert all muslims to Christianity. Some of my reasons are selfish, for example: I want women to stop being abused in the name of Islam, no more female circumcision, no more “honor” killings, no more forced marriages (especially of 8 year old little girls), and no more possessed people trying to blow up others who just want to ilve a peaceful life and be free to make their own decisions about their faith and their life.
I also would prefer the people running GITMO would play the Bible on tape 24 hours a day instead of Britney Spears and take away the detainees’ ability to practice their own faith. Sorry, but if you are tossing feces at the guards we are taking away your prayer rug, your Koran, and we are piping in 24-7 Alister Begg in your native tongue.

Well said amber, I couldn’t agree with you more. Would love to see GITMO piping in Bible on tape or sermons from Alister Begg and John MacArthur 24-7.

    • Destroying the Bible was “appropriate”, according to these folks, because we all know that every single problem and struggle the world has ever had – plus every instance of oppression and tyranny – is caused by those pesky Christians (/sarcasm).

    Once upon a time…
    Battle Hymn of the Republic:

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
    While God is marching on.

    Star Spangled Banner:

Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

    America:

    Our fathers’ God to Thee,
    Author of Liberty,
    To thee we sing,
Long may our land be bright
    With Freedom’s holy light,
    Protect us by thy might
    Great God, our King.

Nice of the Chaplains to make use of their time. Nothing like doing God’s work.

I guess Martyrdom isn’t what it once was!

    Ah the Good old days!

A more reasonable response would have been to send them back to the Church that sent them with a letter saying that soldiers can’t try to convert muslims while on active duty in a war zone.

The church then could have sent them to a missionary in the middle east that could use them. Book burning is always bad.
