From the White House:

Reality Check: Trying to Turn a Point of Pride into a Moment of Shame

Posted by Jesse Lee

Last night Fox News continued its disregard for the facts in an attempt to smear the Administration’s efforts to win the Olympics for the United States. In the past, hosting the Olympics has been a source of pride and unity for the country, but once again Fox News’ Glenn Beck program has shown that nothing is worthy of respect if it can be used as part of a partisan attack to boost ratings

RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT "HAD THE OLYMPICS."   Glenn Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics."  [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: VANCOUVER’S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010.   Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 – 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. [Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]

RHETORIC: VALERIE JARRETT "WAS LAST SEEN WITH THE NEA."  Beck’s guest, FOX News contributor Pat Caddell, said, "[Obama] is going to go [to Copenhagen] with Valerie Jarrett who was last seen with the NEA pumping up their use of, you know, money." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: VALERIE JARRETT WAS NOT ON THE NEA CONFERENCE CALL.   Valerie Jarrett was not a participant in the August 10, 2009 United We Serve/NEA conference call.

RHETORIC: CHICAGO IS CLOSING THE GOVERNMENT SEVERAL DAYS A WEEK BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO BE OPEN. Beck’s guest Caddell said, "Chicago is closing the government several days a week because they cannot afford to be open. They are going to go and reward — this is the biggest scandal." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: CHICAGO HAS HAD ONE REDUCED-SERVICE DAY IN 2009, AND WILL HAVE TWO MORE ON THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING AND ON CHRISTMAS EVE.  On August 17, 2009, CBS Chicago reported, "If you planned to check out a library book, visit a city clinic or have your garbage picked up on Monday, you’re out of luck. The City of Chicago is basically closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay. City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices will be closed.  Emergency service providers including police, firefighters and paramedics are working at full strength, but most services not directly related to public safety, including street sweeping, will not be provided.  That also includes garbage pickup. Residents who receive regular collection on Mondays should expect trash to be picked up on Tuesday. Some other customers may experience a one-day delay as collectors catch up.  As part of the 2009 budget, three reduced-service days were planned for 2009, days which are unpaid for all affected employees — the Friday after Thanksgiving; Christmas Eve; and New Year’s Eve. The City Council recently approved moving the reduced-service day planned for New Year’s Eve to Monday.  The 2009 budget anticipates saving $8.3 million due to the reduced-service days.   In addition to reduced service days, all non-union employees were asked to take a series of furlough days and unpaid holidays, and most non-sworn union employees agreed to similar unpaid time off." [CBS Chicago, 8/17/09]

RHETORIC: VALERIE JARRETT WILL BENEFIT FINANCIALLY. Beck asked, "Is it possible that she is going to benefit if the Olympics come to Chicago?" Caddell responded, "Well, that’s the word. She has certainly had a lot of dealings going on in real estate." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]

REALITY: UPON ENTERING GOVERNMENT, VALERIE JARRETT DIVESTED ALL HER REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT HOLDINGS EXCEPT FOR A SINGLE INVESTMENT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLYMPIC BID. Valerie Jarrett divested all her investment real estate holdings upon entering government except for a single real estate holding that she was unable to sell. This single real estate investment has been determined by White House Counsel and the independent Office of Government Ethics to present no conflict of interest in performing her duties as a White House advisor.  It has nothing to do with the Olympic bid.

For even more Fox lies, check out the latest "Truth-O-Meter" feature from Politifact that debunks a false claim about a White House staffer that continues to be repeated by Glenn Beck and others on the network.

This seems a little fishy to us. But, alas, who can we report it to?

Mind you, Mr. Obama promised us an era of post-partisanship. And yet this is only one small step away from Mr. Chavez closing down any television stations that dare to criticize him.

As to the “lies,” we suspect Mr. Beck might have meant Montreal instead of Vancouver and simply misspoke.

The rest of the claims can be argued either way, it seems to us.

Of course we should not be surprised that the White House would misrepresent the facts, however.

After all, these are the same people who began their ‘Fight The Smears’ website by posting a lie about Rush Limbaugh.

These are the same people who have so little regard for the truth, they claimed that Mr. Obama never worked for ACORN.

They are shameless.

Sooner or later Americans will wake up and realize that they have been arguing with morally bankrupt – mental retards and take appropriate actions. A country administered by nuts is administered for the benefit of the nuts, at all of our peril.

It is easy to call someone a liar without any corroborating evidence; even easier when you “debunk” someone lies with your own. The amazing thing is that people have such blind faith in the administration that they will believe these allegations without any proof that Glenn Beck’s claims are indeed lies. The lies that come strait from the horses, Mrs. Jarrett’s, mouth.

My favorite is the one about Mrs. Jarrett’s potential financial gain. We cannot slander her such a way because she has divested all financial interests. However, it is OK for them to say the Iraq war was fought only to enrich Mr. Cheney’s Halliburton. A company which he divested all finical interests, and without the caveat of ‘EXCEPT FOR A SINGLE INVESTMENT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE’ Iraq war.

Seems to me the only thing Mr. Beck is guilty of is selective reporting. A tactic used by the left many time. Obama himself is above such chicanery, he simply makes up stories, i.e. health insurance nightmares, in their entirety. After all, fiction really isn’t lying.

I still insist that it’s not so much the MSM being water-carriers for the boy, but that the American public, largely TV-centric has the tube on all the time and also, anyone with even remotely a smidgen of credibility, either real or imagined, they tend to listen to as giving them the “absolute truth”.

In their minds, how could it possibly be so that the MSM is trying to feed them crap? And with that said, I’m also certain that it’s not so much as a lefty agenda they preach as it is that they simply have no idea that they’re doing it. Sure, some is intentional, but likening it to a mental condition where they have programed themselves to see things only a certain way, to us, it naturally lacks the self-critiquing and critical thinking necessary to pass the litmus test of truth.

In other words, they just regurgitate the lies. It almost makes no difference to them since it’s their name that’s getting noticed, their face on the screen, their career that’s moving ahead. Doesn’t matter what they report and they were told to report it like this….and they do. Not that they aren’t responsible for the content…..they absolutely are. And I’m not giving them a pass to do less than substantial reporting.

But they seem to be wired in such a way that they actually see things so differently and also…cannot be self-critical of their work.

Thus, we have this huge population of “journalists” who have no idea that they are just mouthpieces for the system they think will bring them to huge success in their chosen field. Their idea of success is an editorship or a news anchor desk. The parody with Ted Knight on the MTM show is not that far off. A vacuous imbecile spouting whatever thing is in his frontal lobe at the time, no matter how idiotic it may seem….he says it with authority and a strong tone and thus, feels he is certainly believable.

The same applies with the writers. I’ve said it before. They use every clever-sounding catch phrase from 10th grade creative writing class and even have their own “buzzword” generator on their word processors. I get so sick of reading, “mountainous debt”, “runaway wildfires”, and of course, the ever-present, “unexpectedly”. Certain words and phrases roll off well and sound nifty but often at the expense of telling the truth, just to get someone to be so enamored with a headline that they just might read the story…and if the story is filled with more “chewing gum for the mind” type of phraseology, so much the better. Because it doesn’t matter what it said. It matters to the writer that someone remembers their name…little more.

Of course, I may be way off base…but I think I understand some of the mechanisms they use and misuse. Our society is so bent on “making it exciting” that they have lost sight of real fact-finding. Thus, I love conservative talk-radio and this blog and a few others. I do get angry when I read the truth because nothing seems to make a difference with liberals and their incessant whining and having a tantrum to get their way. Well, now they’ve gotten their way and still they whine, still they fuss and fidget. Even in the face of, “You conservatives are just sore losers…get over it, we won”.

So shut up already and deal with it yourselves. But why are yo so surprised to hear we don’t like it much? Kind of funny when the shoe’s on the other foot, isn’t it? Only….we’re not laughing. Oddly….neither are you.

I think you are missing part of it, Rusty.

They are brainwashed by their schooling and by living in an idealogical bubble once they get a job in the media. It isn’t just the natural course of events attributable to being a personality on tv.

There is a lot of evidence that they are controlled by their ideology.

You are too young to remember Watergate, but the media was fierce in their pursuit of a President with whom they disagreed. Well, Obama is a hundred times more corrupt, more criminal, more venal, and more dangerous to the country. Yet they investigate nothing about him. But it’s acually much worse. They actively cover up anything they don’t want the public to know about him.

Secondly, they still do the exact opposite for people with whom they disagree now. Sarah Palin. Enough said.

Thirdly, their ideology maps perfectly to Liberal Socialism, despite all of the evidence that the country is center right. The odds of this happening by chance are impossible.

So it’s way more than pretty people, full of themselve, basking in the spotlight, and repeating words somebody places in their mouths.

As I said at the beginning, they are brainwashed from the start and live and work in a closed social circle that reinforces the ideology that was drummed into their heads in college and before. Only strong independent thinkers can escape it. And there are very few of those in journalism, which by it’s nature attracts passive rather than active personality types.

And there is also substantial evidence that the brainwashing was and is a deliberate strategy by people who chose that path to undermine this country, since they couldn’t defeat us militarilly and couldn’t directly confront the values of a confident and proud country in the years after WWII.

I’m more sympathetic to your argument that the sheople simply follow the words of the tv gurus. I buy it because I lived it for years.

But I also think it’s unfair to put too much blame on sheople. Most people are busy living their lives and can’t really take the time to investigate these issues and form independent opinions. They should, but you know that most don’t. Now, everyone who reads this site has become educated about these issues, but I’ll bet that if you could delve into the details, the vast majority of independent political thinkers are older, and/or have experienced some kind of life event that opened their eyes like 9/11 did for Dennis Miller. I’m hoping Death Panels is doing that for millions of Americans right now.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

I do remember Watergate and how bloodthirsty the media was. Every night another new “factoid” about it. As a kid, it was, of course, tiresome.

Perhaps I should’ve been more descriptive. The higher-ups in the news agencies seek out and hire the mush-minded interns that they think will best forward their agenda. Yes, by the time they are entrenched in the business, their indoctrination is all but complete.

As to their upbringing being complicit in this; Yes, absolutely. Liberal parenting, hanging out with the “cool” kids, etc. But popularity feeds directly into that “need for being wanted”. When I was growing up, my parents, who had grown up with very, very little, were often deeply annoyed when I would lament about not being popular and the other kids who were. They constantly reinforced on my brother and myself that satisfaction starts from within…and when you are strong enough inside, others will respect that.

      Well, yes and no.

So my observation isn’t inaccurate, just lacking in further details….like what you said. The system, as it stands today, fosters that kind of thinking and belittles the independent minds who find dissatisfaction with just going along to get along. I was one of those. Although I did it often enough to keep up. Mostly, I found my peers to be wanting in the ability think critically and really understand the mechanisms that make systems work or not work. The inability to actually see what could possibly go wrong, in other words.

Yes, I was missing part of it but kinda figured it goes without saying. All along a journalist-to-be’s life is a well-worn track of liberal thinking….with the ultimate goal: To find the “victim” in every situation…and by proxy, learn how to be a victim themselves, thereby opening the world to sympathy and a path to wealth and political connections and “insider” treatment.

Frankly, as you probably know…it sickens me.

I liked the points you made, and thanks.

To the Democrats in Congress who don’t quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I – and a lot of other people – have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want. That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your district and we will work against you, first in the primary and, if we have to, in the general election.

IOC may have learned truth about Obama, Valerie Jarret’s, Daly, Rezko’s rich/poor housekeeping in Chicago

BostonGlobe: Grim proving ground for Obama’s housing policy
By Binyamin Appelbaum, Globe Staff | June 27, 2008

CHICAGO – The squat brick buildings of Grove Parc Plaza, in a dense neighborhood that Barack Obama represented for eight years as a state senator,…. subsidized by the federal government …

But it’s not safe to live here… Sewage backs up into kitchen sinks. In 2006, federal inspectors graded the condition of the complex an 11 on a 100-point scale…face demolition.

As a state senator, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee coauthored an Illinois law creating a new pool of tax credits for developers. As a US senator, he pressed for increased federal subsidies…

But a Globe review found that thousands of apartments across Chicago that had been built with local, state, and federal subsidies – including several hundred in Obama’s former district – deteriorated so completely that they were no longer habitable.

Grove Parc and several other prominent failures were developed and managed by Obama’s close friends and political supporters. Those people profited from the subsidies even as many of Obama’s constituents suffered.

Obama’s campaign, in a written response to Globe questions, affirmed the candidate’s support of public-private partnerships as an alternative to public housing….
The campaign did not respond to questions about whether Obama was aware of the problems with buildings in his district… nor…on the roles played by people connected to the senator.

Among those tied to Obama politically, personally, or professionally are:

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama’s presidential campaign and a member of his finance committee. Jarrett is the chief executive of Habitat Co., which managed Grove Parc Plaza from 2001 until this winter and co-managed an even larger subsidized complex in Chicago that was seized by the federal government in 2006, after city inspectors found widespread problems.

Allison Davis, a major fund-raiser for Obama’s US Senate campaign and a former lead partner at Obama’s former law firm. Davis, a developer, was involved in the creation of Grove Parc and has used government subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,500 units in Chicago,…chronic plumbing failures resulted in raw sewage spilling into several apartments.

Antoin “Tony” Rezko, perhaps the most important fund-raiser for Obama’s early political campaigns and a friend who helped the Obamas buy a home in 2005. Rezko’s company used subsidies to rehabilitate more than 1,000 apartments, mostly in and around Obama’s district, then refused to manage the units, leaving the buildings…where many no longer were habitable.

Campaign finance records show that six prominent developers – including Jarrett, Davis, and Rezko – collectively contributed more than $175,000 to Obama’s campaigns over the last decade and raised hundreds of thousands more…Rezko alone raised at least $200,000, by Obama’s own accounting.

One of those contributors, Cecil Butler, controlled Lawndale Restoration, the largest subsidized complex in Chicago, which was seized by the government in 2006 after city inspectors found more than 1,800 code violations.

Jarrett, a powerful figure in the Chicago development community,…declined to answer questions about Grove Parc, citing what she called a continuing duty to Habitat’s former business partners….

“Government is just not as good at owning and managing as the private sector because the incentives are not there,” said Jarrett, whose company manages more than 23,000 apartments…

… Under Mayor Richard M. Daley, who elected in 1989, the city launched a massive plan to let private companies

The city also hired private companies to manage the remaining public housing …And it subsidized private companies to create and manage new affordable housing,…

Chicago’s plans… asked why the government should pay developers to perform a basic public service –

Most of all, they alleged that Chicago was interested primarily in redeveloping projects close to the Loop, the downtown area that was seeing a surge of private development activity,..

“They are rapidly displacing poor people, and these companies are profiting from this displacement,” said Matt Ginsberg-Jaeckle of Southside Together Organizing for Power,…

“The same exact people who ran these places into the ground,” the private companies paid to build and manage the city’s affordable housing, “now are profiting by redeveloping them.”

Barack Obama…shared Daley’s conviction that private companies would make better landlords than the Chicago Housing Authority.

He once told the Chicago Tribune that he had briefly considered becoming a developer of affordable housing. But after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1991, he turned down a job with Tony Rezko’s development company, Rezmar,…

The firm represented a number of nonprofit companies that were partnering with private developers to build affordable housing with government subsidies.

Obama sometimes worked on their cases. In at least one instance, he represented the nonprofit company that owned Grove Parc, Woodlawn Preservation and Investment Corp., when it was sued by the city for failing to adequately heat one of its apartment complexes.

Shortly after becoming a state senator in 1997, Obama told the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin that his experience working with the development industry had reinforced his belief in subsidizing private developers of affordable housing.

The developers gave Obama their financial support. Jarrett, Davis, and Rezko all served on Obama’s campaign finance committee when he won a seat in the US Senate in 2004.

Obama has continued to support increased subsidies as a presidential candidate, calling for the creation of an Affordable Housing Trust Fund,…The money would be siphoned from the profits of two mortgage companies created and supervised by the federal government, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac….

The owner, a local nonprofit company called Woodlawn Preservation and Investment Corp., was led by two of the neighborhood’s most powerful ministers, Arthur Brazier and Leon Finney. Obama had relationships with both men.
Woodlawn Preservation hired a private management firm, William Moorehead and Associates, to oversee the complex. In 2001, the company lost that contract and a contract to manage several public housing projects for allegedly failing to do its job. The company’s head, William Moorehead, was subsequently convicted of embezzling almost $1 million in management fees.

Woodlawn Preservation hired a new property manager, Habitat Co. At the time, the company was headed by its founder, Daniel Levin, also a major contributor to Obama’s campaigns. Valerie Jarrett was executive vice president.

Residents say the complex deteriorated under Moorehead’s management and continued to decline after Habitat took over.

…Grove Parc got a score of 11 and a final warning. Three months later, inspectors found there had been insufficient improvements and moved to seize the complex from Woodlawn Preservation.

After negotiations with tenants, the government agreed to allow a new company, Preservation of Affordable Housing, a Boston-based firm, to replace Habitat as the manager of Grove Parc. The company is negotiating to buy the development, which would then be demolished and replaced with new housing.

Officials at Woodlawn Preservation say the government didn’t give them enough money to properly maintain Grove Parc. Habitat’s Jarrett declined to comment on Grove Parc…

“Grove Parc is quite an exception to what we’ve normally done because it’s in such bad shape,” said the nonprofit’s chief executive, Amy Anthony.”

Similar problems also plagued the next generation of affordable housing de velopment in Obama’s district,…Daley administration’s efforts….

One of the largest recipients of the subsidies was Rezmar Corp., founded in 1989 by Tony Rezko,…and Daniel Mahru,… Neither man had development experience.

Rezmar collected millions in development fees but fell behind on mortgage payments almost immediately…

By the time Obama entered the state Senate in 1997, the buildings were beginning to deteriorate. In January 1997, the city sued Rezmar…

Most of the buildings have since been foreclosed upon, forcing the tenants to find new housing.

All the while, Tony Rezko was forging a close friendship with Barack Obama. When Obama opened his campaign for state Senate in 1995, Rezko’s companies gave Obama $2,000 on the first day of fund-raising…Rezko had essentially seeded the start of Obama’s political career.

As Obama ascended, Rezko became one of his largest fund-raisers. And in 2005, Rezko and his wife helped the Obamas purchase the house….

Eleven of Rezmar’s buildings were located in the district represented by Obama, containing 258 apartments. The building without heat in January 1997, the month Obama entered the state Senate, was in his district. So was Jones’s building with rats in the walls and Frizzell’s building that lacked insulation. And a redistricting after the 2000 Census added another 350 Rezmar apartments to the area represented by Obama.

But Obama has contended that he knew nothing about any problems in Rezmar’s buildings.

After Rezko’s assistance in Obama’s home purchase became a campaign issue, at a time when the developer was awaiting trial in an unrelated bribery case, Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times that the deterioration of Rezmar’s buildings never came to his attention. He said he would have distanced himself from Rezko if he had known.

Allison Davis, Obama’s former law firm boss, dabbled in development for years while he worked primarily as a lawyer. He participated in the development of Grove Parc Plaza. And in 1996, Davis left his law firm to pursue a full-time career as an affordable housing developer, fueled by the subsidies from the Daley administration and aided, on occasion, by Obama himself.

In several cases, Davis partnered with Tony Rezko. In 1998 the two men created a limited partnership to build an apartment building for seniors on Chicago’s South Side. Obama wrote letters on state Senate stationery supporting city and state loans for the project.

In 2000 Davis asked the nonprofit Woods Fund of Chicago for a $1 million investment in a new development partnership, Neighborhood Rejuvenation Partners. Obama, a member of the board, voted in favor, helping Davis secure the investment.

The following year, Davis assembled another partnership to create New Evergreen/Sedgwick, a $10.7 million renovation of five walk-up buildings in a gentrifying neighborhood. The project, a model of small-scale, mixed-income development, was subsidized by almost $6 million in state loans and federal tax credits.

New Evergreen/Sedgwick is managed by a company run by Cullen Davis, Allison Davis’s son and also a contributor to Obama’s campaigns. Cullen Davis said the problems were rooted in the way New Evergreen/Sedgwick was financed. Like most new projects, it is owned by a company created to own one building. That company determined how much to spend on renovations, how much to set aside for maintenance – and how much to keep as profit.

All these deals are set up as islands,” Cullen Davis acknowledged.

Lawndale Restoration was a collection of more than 1,200 apartments in 97 buildings spread across 300 blocks of west Chicago. It was owned by a company controlled by Cecil Butler, a former civil rights activist who came to be reviled as a slumlord by a younger generation of activists.

In 2000 Butler’s company brought in Habitat Co. to help manage the complex.

Nonetheless, the buildings deteriorated badly. The problems came to public attention in a dramatic way in 2004,…

In the midst of the uproar, a small group of Lawndale residents gathered to rally against the Democratic candidate for the US Senate, Barack Obama.

Obama’s Republican opponent, Alan Keyes, trailed badly in the polls and was not seen as a serious challenger. But the organizers had a simple message: Cecil Butler had donated $3,000 to Obama’s campaign. Habitat had close ties to Obama. And Obama had remained silent about Lawndale’s plight.

Paul Johnson, who helped to organize the protest, said Obama must have known about the problems.
“How didn’t he know?” said Johnson. “Of course he knew. He just didn’t care.”

Habitat emphasized in a statement that its role at Lawndale was restricted to tasks that included financial oversight and management.

In 2006, following the foreclosure, the federal government sold the buildings to the city for $10.
The city has since parceled out the buildings among two dozen developers, who are rebuilding Lawndale for the fourth time with yet another round of government loans and subsidies.

Even as Lawndale Restoration and Rezmar’s buildings were foreclosed upon, and Grove Parc and other subsidized developments fell deeper into disrepair, Obama has remained a steadfast supporter of subsidizing private development.

… Obama has remained close to others in the development community. Jarrett participates in the campaign’s senior staff meetings. And Obama chose another close friend, Martin Nesbitt, as his campaign treasurer. Nesbitt is chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority, one of the key overseers of the shift toward private management and development.

Some housing advocates worry that Obama has not learned from those failures.

“I’m not against Barack Obama,” said Willie J.R. Fleming, an organizer with the Coalition to Protect Public Housing and a former public housing resident. “What I am against is some of the people around him.”

    long article at

Beck did not mention Valerie Jarret’s owning any buildings, yet the above article explains the one she kept. Beck only said she got 1 million dollars last year for running slum housing.

What exactly does WH mean by Jarret’s “entering government”? title? Michelle’s assistant? sludge gardner? make-up assistant,
our tax dollars pay for Jarret to go to coppenhagen.
pay her to go to an Olympic meeting?

Beck said 1 Billion? Obama was to pay BILLIONS taxes for bullet speed hub, etc

Would the IOC want Obama and his trashy company & companies to get Chicago ready for World’s finest athletes? Obama chose Chicago, because he is
greedy, meglomaniac, and corrupt. No telling what shape he’ll leave the WH in.

Compare Obama’s health care to his condemned properties our taxes paid, to end up condemned.
