WHO: Swine Flu Pandemic Has Begun!

From an ecstatic Associated Press:

WHO: Swine flu pandemic has begun, 1st in 41 years

BY Maria Cheng And Frank Jordans, Associated Press Writer

GENEVA – The World Health Organization told its member nations it was declaring a swine flu pandemic Thursday — the first global flu epidemic in 41 years — as infections climbed in the United States, Europe, Australia, South America and elsewhere.

In a statement sent to member countries, WHO said it decided to raise the pandemic warning level from phase 5 to 6 — its highest alert — after holding an emergency meeting on swine flu with its experts.

The long-awaited pandemic decision is scientific confirmation that a new flu virus has emerged and is quickly circling the globe. It will trigger drugmakers to speed up production of a swine flu vaccine and prompt governments to devote more money toward efforts to contain the virus.

"At this early stage, the pandemic can be characterized globally as being moderate in severity," WHO said in the statement, urging nations not to close borders or restrict travel and trade. "(We) remain in close dialogue with influenza vaccine manufacturers." …

The last pandemic — the Hong Kong flu of 1968 — killed about 1 million people. Ordinary flu kills about 250,000 to 500,000 people each year.

Many health experts say WHO’s pandemic declaration could have come weeks earlier but the agency became bogged down by politics. In May, several countries urged WHO not to declare a pandemic, fearing it would cause social and economic turmoil…

Despite WHO’s hopes, raising the epidemic alert to the highest level will almost certainly spark some panic about spread of swine flu.

Fear has already gripped Argentina, where thousands of people worried about swine flu flooded into hospitals this week, bringing emergency health services in the capital of Buenos Aires to the brink of collapse. Last month, a bus arriving in Argentina from Chile was stoned by people who thought a passenger on it had swine flu. Chile has the most swine flu cases in South America.

In Hong Kong on Thursday, the government ordered all kindergartens and primary schools closed for two weeks after a dozen students tested positive for swine flu — a move that some flu experts would consider an overreaction.

In the United States, where there have been more than 13,000 cases and at least 27 deaths from swine flu, officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the move would not change how the U.S. tackled swine flu

The U.S. government has already taken steps like increasing availability of flu-fighting medicines and authorizing $1 billion for the development of a new vaccine against the novel virus. In addition, new cases seem to be declining in many parts of the country, U.S. health officials say, as North America moves out of its traditional winter flu season.

Still, Osterholm said the declaration was a wake-up call for the world.

"I think a lot of people think we’re done with swine flu, but you can’t fall asleep at the wheel," he said. "We don’t know what’s going to happen in the next 6 to 12 months."

And, no kidding, they really mean it this time.

It’s going to be big. Really it is.

The long-awaited pandemic decision is scientific confirmation that a new flu virus has emerged and is quickly circling the globe.

This is what passes for “scientific confirmation” nowadays?

No wonder there is a ‘scientific consensus’ about man-made ‘global warming.’

"I think a lot of people think we’re done with swine flu, but you can’t fall asleep at the wheel," he said. "We don’t know what’s going to happen in the next 6 to 12 months."

When should you fall asleep at the wheel?

Just in time for the Universal Health Care debate!!!

    To the day.

    What a coincidence.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Not a debate, Pro, so much as another campaign sales pitch.

List of words and phrases you will hear:
      Consequences (of not doing this)
      Inherited from the previous administration
      You must sacrifice
      Won’t happen overnight
Lay the foundation for a better future

And so on and so on. I don’t call him O-blah-blah for nothing

  2. Right of the People says:

FLEE, FLEE, the swine flu is coming!

Even the WHO is saying that this is a mild version of flu but like the TOTUS’s chief of staff says, “Never waste a crisis” to paraphrase. I guess they see an opportunity for a big payday from the Won.

  3. curvyred says:

Oh my goodness, SARS, Avian, West Nile and now Swine – I am soooooooo afraid.

    (edit that was sarcasm)

  4. take_no_prisoners says:

Lighten up! Pandemic doesn’t necessarily mean deadly, it just means that it’s widespread and we should be prepared if the damn thing mutates a little and becomes the next 1918 killer. If the WHO didn’t take precautions and prepare when the S#!+ hit the fan everyone would be up in arms about why no one raised an alarm and prepared for this sort of thing. There are some alarming qualities to this flu virus e.g. deaths of people in their 20’s to 40’s with no pre-existing health issues. This is an appropriate, measured response and is not meant to be alarmist!

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

It’s good that you let us know that, take.

However, you appear to stand as a perfect example of what the liberals want in the public masses.

The deaths are neither alarming nor unique.

The words the MSM use are EXACTLY intended to invoke fear and panic among the masses. Critical thinking, to which I’ll afford you some credit, allows for people capable of same to certainly be aware of the potential, but not start playing “chicken little” with the facts.

Every few years it’s something. Ever since I was in grade school I’ve heard of this health fiasco and that. None of which ever affected me, personally. The point you’re perhaps missing is that more people die every day in motorcycle crashes in the US than have died total from this “pandemic” and I question the MSM’s use of that word. Each case is isolated, and as far as I can tell, independent.

      And, it’s treatable.

Have you ever sat in front of the TV and noted the language that the newsies use? It’s like listening to a junior year high school oral report in creative writing class. It would seem that the rags we all used to laugh at like the Daily Enquirer have managed to flow over into the MSM and provide that intensity that people seem to crave.

“Your child may be a criminal every time they log onto the computer! Find out about this new form of illegal activity at 6”.

      Oh, please.

So, I’m afraid I have to take the swine flu info as useless rhetoric but I am concerned nonetheless. Concerned because of the AGENDA the MSM wants to push. That being socialized medicine.

Remember Blammo’s words? The financial CRISIS? The healthcare CRISIS? He loves that word….and it has the desired effect. Almost half of this nation, programed by soundbites and behavioral scientists have given them the marketing tools through years of research on how to reach the emotional center of people’s brains. The original purpose was to sell soft drinks but the democrats have turned it into an artform.

So are you an independent, critical thinker, or are you one who watches/listens to mainstream news and thinks it has credibility?

      Just asking.

The problem is that “THE SKY IS FALLING”! and THE WOLF! THE WOLF! THIS time I mean it….HURRY QUICK!

After all “The Great ‘I Won” has already told us that this is the only time we can do it or it will NEVER get done…(Stop…I can’t take teasing like that). The “stars are all aligned” he said.

Translation: “.Not enough repubs in congress to stop it….and the CDC is co-operating with me with this scare”

    • take_no_prisoners says:

The unusual thing about the deaths is the high percentage of young healthy people in the deaths. The Flu usually kills about 500,000 people a year but the people it kills are usually the very young, the very old and people already suffering from serious pre-existing medical conditions. This one truly bears watching and following the boy scout motto. Be Prepared. Hopefully this is much ado about nothing…but if it does turn into a mass killer time is short to get the vaccine developed, produced and distributed, it can’t be done overnight if we find that we really need it.

I feel for Chill they have had a lot of bad luck a Volcano which was declared to be dormant go’s off and now hit hard by the Flu well maybe this is because they turned their backs on their own beliefs and accepted an enemy with open arms?

    Just a thought?
Well if they can do it so can I.

Can’t even say what is happening to their crops that feed so many they were blessed but they now seam to be under a curse they are a lining themselves with the descendents of Ham.
