Who’s Planning To Celebrate Obama Win?

From (the laughably named) Indymedia’s Indypendent:

NYC Election Night Party Preview: Activists Ready to Celebrate, Then Agitate As Obama Moves to the Cusp of Victory

By John Tarleton

November 3, 2008

Long before Bush-bashing became commonplace, radicals were speaking out from Day One and protesting against the policies of the most reactionary administration in modern U.S. history. Now, after eight long years, America stands on the verge of electing a charismatic, highly intelligent, moderate-to-liberal African-American president. So, who doesn’t want to party even if there are many reasons to be wary of Obama’s agenda and the people who are backing him?

Here’s a sampling of a few of the parties going on around town Tuesday night. Please share additional info in the comment section below.

Things are hopping these days at the Brecht Forum. On Tuesday, this lefty social center on 451 West Ave. will kick things off at 1:30 p.m. with a screening of the film “Head of State” starring Chris Rock and Bernie Mac and followed by a special “Youth & the Vote” discussion, a youth-led conversation on the election and how youth concerns are being addressed. This will be followed by a “Media Justice Mixer” before everyone heads over to the nearby LGBT center at 213 W. 13th St.  to watch live election returns. * Free

New York’s own Rosa Clemente will be celebrating the end of her third party campaign at SB3 Bar on 33 Ave. B between 2nd and 3rd St. and will address her supporters at 11 p.m. Afterwards, there will be an old fashioned Hip-Hop jam until the break of dawn, Some folks coming through so far … Rebel Diaz, K-Sallam, Hakim of Channel Live, Khalil Almustafa, N.Y.
Oil, UMI of P.O.W and many other surprise guests.

“O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath– America will be!” Wrote Harlem poet Langston Hughes in his landmark 1938 poem “Let American Be America Again”. On Tuesday night, thousands of people are expected to  gather in the heart of the historic capital of Black America to watch election returns on a giant Jumbotron screen that will be set up in the plaza outside the Adam Clayton Powell Office Building at 125 th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. * Free

If the Jumbotron scene at 125th and Adam Clayton Powell is too large and hectic for your taste, you can journey three blocks south to watch the election returns in a smaller, more personal setting with folks from the International Socialists Organization who will be gathering at 145 W 122nd St, Apt. #3 between Malcolm X Blvd and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd (Lenox and 7th). Admission is sliding scale from $5-15 and refreshments will be served.
The party announcement that went out reflects both the optimism and the caution that Obama’s promise of change and renewal has elicited from the Left. “We have seen the first African American named as the Democratic Party nominee,” it reads. “CHANGE has been the theme of the election. But what are the POSSIBILITIES and limitations of the incoming President to bring about change? What can activists do to press their demands on the next administration? Join us for election night. CELEBRATE the end of decades of Republican rule!! PARTY with people who are interested in POLITICS and ACTIVISM. Share your views and predictions. Talk about the future struggles to come.”

Come party with the Revolutionary Communist Party at their Chelsea storefront bookstore at 146 W. 26th St. and learn more about Chairman Bob Avakian’s analysis of the world situation. There will be a discussion from 7-9 p.m. of  “the storms that are sure to come” and what to do after the elections are over. From 9 p.m. on, people will watch the returns come in. * Free

The Missile Dick Chicks have been strapping-it-on for peace for years. Tomorrow night starting at 7 p.m., they will celebrate the success of their 2008 World Domination Tour with a fabulous floor show and  election-watching party at the Living Theater at 21 Clinton St. in the Lower East Side. $10 at the door * Beer and wine cash bar

The Williamsburg-based Change You Want to See Gallery is always looking for ways to integrate  arts and activism. According to their announcement, “ Tonight we be merry, as tomorrow our work will begin anew.  Bring food and booze, we’ll do the same, and we’ll pull out the projector to stream Current TV’s coverage, plus a television set to scan the networks.” Doors open from 7 p.m to Midnight. * 84 Havermeyer St. at Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg, Brooklyn * Free

Located across the street from the Change You Want to See Gallery, the City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization will host an election party on Tuesday Nov. 4, from 7pm until there is a new president. Amidst red, white and blue bunting and streamers we will have two separate projectors and will live-broadcast the state-by-state roll calls, on both indoor and outdoor screens, courtesy of CNN.com. On the grill, there will be burgers, dogs and veggie dogs at ‘08 Recession prices, as well as Brooklyn beer and soda available for donation. Apple pie will be served with proof of vote cast Also, there will be a bicycle ride, departing from City Hall (Centre Street and Chambers) at 6pm, and heading towards the Reliquary, in time to enjoy the votes coming in.
370 Metropolitan Ave. at Havermeyer, Williamsburg, Brooklyn * L / G trains to Metro/Lorimer * Free

Event/discussion: Election Day party. W/Sander Hicks. “Obama will have won by a landslide. So, what is the change you will demand?
1022 Cortelyou Road * Q to Cortelyou, F to Ditmas Ave. * Free

The MCCain Manhattan Team is is having an Election Night Party at Dewey’s Flatiron – whether it ends up being to celebrate or for moral support, time will tell, any other New Yorkers out there for McCain are welcome!

  2. 1sttofight says:

The only agitater I know of is in my washing machine.

  3. curvyred says:

“Activists Ready to Celebrate, Then Agitate As Obama Moves to the Cusp of Victor”

Sounds like Obama supporters no doubt, they seem very profecient at the act of “agitation”

  4. John Tarleton says:

Is it too much to ask that you correctly cut and paste the headline to my article? The final words should read “As Obama Moves to the Cusp of Victory”. Hope some of you can make these events. Your fears that Obama is a “socialist” might be allayed if you talk to people who actually call themselves that. As for concerns expressed on this website that Obama is a supporter of Nazi-style race war, you all should get your heads examined. The man is half-white and was raised by his white mother and white grandparents and has risen in politics with the support of both whites and blacks and in the past two years has organized the largest, most multi-racial grassroots presidential campaign in U.S. history. Instead of using lamed-brained smear-by-association, look at the man’s actions and his whole life story, or read his speech on race that he gave in Philadelphia on March 18.

I am willing to listen. What exactly has he done other than make a living off the gov tit all his life??

Your ignorance is showing. As it would happen, we have just been commenting on Mr. Obama’s life:

Communism, Nazism – And Barack Obama | Sweetness & Light

But if you can use the search box in the side bar, you will find countless stories about the life and times of Mr. Obama.

    Here is a start:

We probably have posted more articles on Mr. Obama’s life than any other site.

Indeed, we were the first to discover Mr. Wright’s radical side.

Please take the time and educate yourself.

  7. VMAN says:

And Hitler was a sawed off runt half Jew paper hanger. I don’t see your point. Is this guy going to be the first to turn in his neighbor to dear leaders national civilian security force (Hitler Youth)?

  8. Eagle334th says:

Mr. Tarleton is a bit.. out of touch, isn’t he?

    Anyways.. in regards to this:

“Bring food and booze, we’ll do the same,…”

You have to admit, atleast the Dem’s know how to party, and admit that they are partying. ;) I’d show up, just for the free booze and food, then scamper away after pissing off some ‘truther’. :D

  9. sheehanjihad says:

Mr.Tarleton is rightfully upset! He worked for hours on that headline, and was very proud of it.

Of course, he forgot that this is S&L, and SG can and does change the headline to suit his site, not pat Mr. Tarleton on his back and say “there there little boy, it’s ok”.

Here’s a hanky, you freakin baby.

By the way, I have had extensive discussions/arguments with active socialists….and they tell me that Obama is the first real leader in American history who will be able to pull it off. All of them are voting for Obama. Not some, ALL of them. They smell the same victory as Pelosi and Reid.

Try asking some yourself, and not those putz’s who rub elbows with your pulitzer prize winning brie eating wine swillers either, but real street wise socialists. You may learn something to actually report.

  10. Steve says:

“Mr.Tarleton is rightfully upset! He worked for hours on that headline, and was very proud of it.”

No, he is right to be so upset. I left the “y” off of the last word.

Anytime you create a punchy, succinct headline like that one, you hate to have anything mar its stark beauty.
