Why Biden Doesn’t Know Joe The Plumber

On this morning’s installment of DNC/NBC’s Today Show, Mr. Biden claimed that he doesn’t know any “Joe the Plumbers” making $250,000 in his neighborhood:

“I don’t have any ‘Joe the Plumbers’ in my neighborhood that make $250,000 a year and are worried.”

Given Mr. Biden’s ritzy neighborhood, that is quite understandable.

From the October 1, 2008 edition of the New York Times:

Mr. Biden’s 6,800-square-foot colonial-style house sits on four lakefront acres that he bought in March 1996 for $350,000.

For the millions of voters getting to know him, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, portrays himself at times as an average guy who takes the train to work, frets about money and basically has led a middle-class life.

Mr. Biden’s 6,800-square-foot colonial-style house sits on four lakefront acres that he bought in March 1996 for $350,000.

“Ladies and gentlemen, your kitchen table is like mine,” Mr. Biden said when Senator Barack Obama introduced him as his running mate. “You sit there at night after you put the kids to bed and you talk, you talk about what you need. You talk about how much you are worried about being able to pay the bills.”

Mr. Biden certainly can trace his roots to the working-class neighborhoods of Scranton, Pa., and Claymont, Del., where he was raised. But these days, his kitchen table can be found in a 6,800-square-foot custom-built colonial-style house on four lakefront acres, a property worth close to $3 million.

Although he is among the least wealthy members of the millionaires club that is the United States Senate — he and his wife, Jill, a college professor, earn about $250,000 a year — Mr. Biden maintains a lifestyle that is more comfortable than the impression he may have given on the campaign trail. A review of his finances found that when it comes to some of his largest expenses, like the purchase and upkeep of his home and his use of Amtrak trains to get around, he has benefited from resources and relationships not available to average Americans…

And, of course, Mr. Biden is completely misrepresenting what Joe “the plumber” Wurzelbacher actually said.

Mr. Wurzelbacher wants to put a down payment on a plumbing business that costs $250,000. He never claimed to be making that much in income.

But what’s a little lie among blue-collar Joe’s?

Question: Does anyone know what would happen if outsourced jobs were brought back to the US and its Unionized workforce? Demands for higher wages would drive prices up, up, and up. Why is this not a bigger discussion point?

::sigh:: My partner here in the office is prObama. He is saying he read that 1: The Joe Plumber guy isn’t even registered to vote, so nobody should listen to him 2: The guy is rich if he makes $250,000 per year and therefore, his money SHOULD be redistributed to the poor and 3: He must be a plant by the Republican party (compensated for his time and efforts to the cause by the Republican Party).

    oki2,

Looks like your partner is batting 0 for 3.

    1. Joe is a registered Republican.
    2. He makes less than $250,000 at the present time.
    3. Karl Rove is very smart since he knew just where Obama was going to be and had Joe buy a house there several years ago so he would have a chance to talk to Obama when he came through his neighborhood.

    Karl, You Magnificent Bastard!!!

My 2 cents: We just had our bathroom sink fixed up, a new faucet and drain. $500 including parts, labor and a “to-get-the-guy-to-the-house” fee. Took him ~2 hours in the AM. $500 in the PM, 50 weeks a year, 5 days a week, TA DA, $250,000 per year. The man who did the work was an employee of a home services company.

    Just running some numbers.

    Your mileage may vary.

  12. Reality Bytes

Rush asked how many Joe the Plumbers there our there.

As a manufacturer/owner, I have to say I am one and here’s how:

Both my wife & I work for the company I own. Our combined salary is $200,000.

In order to make that salary, get this, the company needs to generate $4,500.00 annual.

The 5 mil goes towards $1,400,000 in overhead & wages for 9 office staff including my wife

Materials cost $1,500,000 (yes almost exclusively American)

Labor – union labor (about 18 guys) is about another million – I unionized the shop myself in a niaive commitment to the men but that’s another story.

The rest is workmans comp., FICA, health & union benefits. We can’t afford to fund the 401K.

SO HERE’S THE CATCH. Suppose we have a good year – like last where we sold close to 5 million. Well I’m glad you asked Barry!

After expenses, the net turned out to be another $160,000 – so you’re thinkin’ Hey RB! You can afford to pay the extra taxes. No way! Here’s why.

The hundred sixty K went to – another 100K in inventory, 25K in debt pay down and the balance in our customers’ past due balance outstanding, which is anywhere between 250K – 500K. See, just cause a company doesn’t collect, doesn’t mean the IRS doesn’t want the tax. We even have to pay the sales taxes and hope we get paid from the customers.

So, what does a guy like Joe the Plumber and me do, we actually have to borrow money to pay the taxes. Isn’t that the final insult!?

So next time someone says “I have a small business with about 30 employees. What am I going to do next year if Obama increases our taxes?” You can say with confidence, “layoffs, downsize and/or go out of business.”

THIS IS SO SIMPLE!! I didn’t go to college, but even I understand it because I live it. It seems there are two types of politicians. Either they are ignorant to these facts of life and can’t help it, or they do and don’t care while they lie to the voters about how they’re going to fix things. They can’t fix anything, they just get in the way of those of us who can.

If Joe the Plumber runs for President, I’ll not only vote for him, I’d be honored to be his running mate.

In the last days leading up to an election, liberals reveal their true colours.
It will get much worse from this point on.

  14. 1sttofight

If a liberal ever started and ran a successful business, he/she would change to a conservative.

  15. Anonymoose

As several people have stated, Biden isn’t looking at the net income of a company, he’s looking at someone’s salary, and they are two different things.

Besides, the guy has been a wealthy senator for so long he has no idea what’s it’s like being poor and struggling. Yes, I know $250,000 a year isn’t “all that much,” as wealth goes, but then…………..wait a minute, old Joe himself is below the income tax smackdown threshold. Hmmmmm, maybe he put that limit in so his own self would be safe, waddya bet?

  16. BillK

Can it be long before we start seeing protests and calls to boycott Joe’s business?

Before the local chapter of the NAACP brands him as a racist?

I will be surprised if Joe comes out of this with his current business intact after the libs finish with him.

Already I suspect OSHA inspectors are planning to visit him and have little talks with all of his employees…

  17. Shinygoon

Guys. As I write this, the MSM is working over time to bury Joe the Plumber . How dare he ask the Obama a straight question. This poor guy is gonna have the IRS at his door sometime tonight. Already the story is he is a relative of one of the Keating 5, he is a McCain plant…etc. Never mind the real story, which WAS that Obama is a marxist.

  18. pinandpuller

Who do you want to pick up the pipe-wrench at 3 AM?

I wonder if Joe the plumber will get an imputed tax bill for all of the advertising he has recieved the past couple of days?

I wonder if budget cuts will cause us to lay off some members of the Congress and the Senate?

I wonder if Obama knows how to make a pipe out of brass fittings and screen?
