Worker Trampled To Death At Wal-Mart

From the New York Daily News:

Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede

Friday, November 28th 2008

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

The 34-year-old employee, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too…I literally had to fight people off my back.”

The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.

The cause of death wasn’t immediately available pending results of an autopsy.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said. Early witness accounts that the woman suffered a miscarriage were unfounded, police said.

Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Wal-Mart spokesman Dave Tovar called the incident a “tragic situation.”

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” Tovar said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time.”

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk’s life.

“They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. “People were still coming through.”

Only a few stopped.

“They’re savages,” said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. “It’s sad. It’s terrible.”

Savages sums it up nicely.

When I first heard about this mob rampage just to shop by the way the pictures of the mob confirms my initial thoughts.

As someone who did get up at 4AM to go – my local WM was a tad crowded – but by the time I got there at 5:05AM – they were already standing in line to check out. I wanted one thing – and snuck out by checking out in the garden center. In and out in less than 20 minutes (and that includes having the guy schlepp it out to the mini-van). I can’t imagine exactly what would induce that kind of stupidity and inhumanity. I however had a taste of it here (to a lesser degree) was zipping up to IKEA on the second leg of my shopping excursion – when I spied a dog on the highway shoulder. Pulled over, climbed over the seats and tried to get it in the van – she wasn’t having any – shot up the hill into the woods and I thought great go home. But as soon as I got back in the van, she came back down and started back to attempting to cross the highway (which was never going to happen, even if she wasn’t run down – the ‘median’ is a 6 ft high concrete wall). So I thought I could herd her towad the next exit which wasn’t that far away. She accomodated me until we came to a short concrete wall – which caused her to panic and she went over it – which the good news is that she was no longer on the shoulder of the highway, I don’t think that the 10 foot drop hurt her since she didn’t know it was coming – but in the 10 minutes it took – not a single person even slowed down to see why I was creeping along the shoulder of the highway.

I just hope that I never collapse or die in a public place – people would just step over me and complain about me being in the way.

Speaking of the culture of death – Planned Parenthood took a further step toward utter dispicable amoral baseness – Abortion gift certificates for Christmas.

God help America – No one I know (even the worst of the bunch) would stampede over a dying man nor even consider much less purchase an abortion gift certificate. I do not think I’d even want to meet the type of person who would do either. Ever.

$100 says that 167% of those shoppers voted for The One.

  4. proreason says:

They couldn’t wait to spend next april’s “tax cut”

  5. DGA says:

Ugh, we waited outside a Best Buy at 4:35 am for an opening at 5:00, by the time we got to the computer area the advertised laptops were all gone, rushed over to Wal mart and the crowd there was just as bad, same story there too, too late. Came home and actually got a better deal on Ebay with free shipping and no sales tax. Should have stayed in bed. And, potential recession, and people with no money? Lines were as long or longer this year, at least there’s still money out there being spent, regardless of the story the MSM will try to spin.

  6. VMAN says:

Hey 1sttofight not only did they vote for him they’re to stupid to realize that the one and his ilk would like nothing better than to close down WM.

  7. retire05 says:

Our nation has been bordering on mob mentality for a long time now. The gays in California protesting Prop 8, now this. But no surprise; civility seems to be dying along with the national press.

The thing that strikes me about this is how the Beast Coast elites always want to slam the South for being a bunch on hay seeds. Yet, where did this happen? In the “tolerant” north. This would have never happened in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia (unless it was in Atlanta).

But everyone of those Obama supporters that contributed to that mans death feel they deserved to be first in line. Is there anything in Wal-Mart that is worth the life of one person?

But what is the life of one man worth when they have no problem killing their unborn?

  8. DEZ says:

I saw raw video footage of the aftermath this morning via someones cell phone.
The crowd that had just trampled one man to death and cost a woman her unborn child could be heard laughing and giggling.
They could be heard complaining about what the Paramedics were doing or not doing.
That’s right, more than a few found it funny, a few also suddenly knew more than the medical professionals, Maybe they could have helped before the medics arrived if they knew so much, after all watching Dr. Phil five days a week makes them experts.
Oh it gets better, the cops decide it best to close the store so they and the medics can better do their jobs, only to be harassed by the crowd that had already killed two without remorse.

Then how long did it take the moonbats to place the blame solely on the retailer?
Nanoseconds is all it took, and they were screaming that Walmart should be sued from existence.
All the usual talking points, the retailer should have had better security, funny how they never have that number figured out for us, its always just more, never a specific number making it easy to move the goal post at any time. (in this case the National Guard would have been needed)
Then comes the part about the store not having enough of the hot ticket items, again the moonbats have no numbers, its just never enough.
Then comes the part that the retailer should have not been advertising the sales because they should have known that human beings would act like starving Hyenas chasing a wounded water buffalo. (In this case it was more like a cheap X-Box)

I guess from a moonbats point of view, there should never be personal responsibility, but all businesses should show responsibility at all times, even though they are managed by a person or persons.

The moonbats are all over the net on this one blaming everyone but the crowd of selfish murdering scum.
They are preaching on Hot-Air, Screeching at Huffington and most likely doing impossible contortions at Kos.
I have a theory to explain it, the people blaming Wal-Mart and not the trampling crowd, know in their hearts that they would act in the same manner as the scum that trampled two human beings to death.

  9. bobbys says:

pretty soon we may all be lined up like that for guverment cheese.

  10. pinandpuller says:

These perps need to be shipped to Pamplona as part of their community service. July 7th, 2009-picking up mierda in the middle of town in blood-red vests for “safety”. Yes, I think that would be appropriate.

The next thing on the list, per wardmama4, is to pass a law that says abortions can only be performed with .22 LR’s-as it gives the fetus a sporting chance. Maybe the governor can come by and commute an abortion once in a while, also.

  11. Anonymoose says:

It reminds me of that story in Australia a few days ago where four teenagers hit a truck with two elderly people in it. They stood by and watched while other people helped, and even had take out food delivered. The kids didn’t care, didn’t even have a license. The elderly male driver died, and the female passenger was severely injured.

I used to want all my crap right here, right now until I worked for a delivery company.

I used to be impatient with store personnel until I worked in one.

I used to demand and want all the junk and doodads I could get my hands on until I started struggling with credit cards.

I still have problems living within my means, but the only thing I could get mad about anymore is being ripped off for a lot of money.

I’ve been able to get most anything I wanted with enough patience and time. There’s nothing worth running someone over and killing them, especially to save a few dollars.

  12. imnewatthis says:

Today I’m proud to say I’ve never participated in Black Friday (unless you count grocery shopping).

  13. Steve says:

The New York Times says this happened because Wal-Mart is non-union:

Wal-Mart has successfully resisted unionization of its employees. New York State’s largest grocery union, Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, called the death of Mr. Damour “avoidable” and demanded investigations.

“Where were the safety barriers?” said Bruce Both, the union president. “Where was security? How did store management not see dangerous numbers of customers barreling down on the store in such an unsafe manner? This is not just tragic; it rises to a level of blatant irresponsibility by Wal-Mart.”

  14. Gila Monster says:

OK folks, I’ll take the hit and be the one to point out the 800lb gorilla in the room.

Notice anything about the photos, and the people in them?

Same thing happened in NOLA with Katrina, but nothing like this happened during the severe Midwest floods we had this year. And nothing like this occurred when Hurricane Ike devastated the Galveston area this year. What is it with the mob mentality that seems to follow the “minorities” of this country
Hmmm, now why is that? Makes one wonder, does it not?

Hey, call me a racist if that’s your inclination, but the brutal facts speak for themselves.
The liberal dominated media ignores this common thread, as do the followers of the Obamessiah, (one and the same, but I digress) but time and time again, the simple facts hold true.

I have donned my flak jacket so let it fly!! ;o)

  15. 1sttofight says:

“Where were the safety barriers?” said Bruce Both, the union president.

Well Mr. Both, most normal and decent people can walk into a store without trampling someone to death. Why are the people in your area different than that?

  16. DEZ says:

I will be 50 years old next month, and at no time in my life have I ever thought that the worst mistake I could make was to wait in line at a store.
To actually be shoved to the ground by an unruly crowd and stomped to death has never been a concern.

The people in this crowd can never claim to be human, let alone humane, They are the most introverted self centered scum to ever draw a breath.
And anyone wanting to blame anyone other than the animals that pushed, shoved and stomped two human beings to death are the lowest form of scum to ever crawl out of a primordial ooze.

As 1sttofight has pointed out, decent human beings act like something other than undisciplined primates!

  17. DEZ says:

SG, it would appear that the article has been sent to a black hole.
I will say this, I read it before it was crushed and destroyed.

  18. brad says:

I still think the retailer has to be smarter than the barbarian hordes that line up at their stores. No question these people are as dumb as a bag of hammers, but come on!

    1. Advertise super-low prices on things to draw a crowd.
    2. Know they are going to line up at 4:00AM like they do every year.
    3. You know there is a limited supply, so you are inviting nervousness and panic.
    4. You let people line up as a pushing/shoving mob before the doors open.
    5. You throw the floodgates open and you KNOW the mob is going to bum-rush the place to get the item they want before anyone else does! WTH!?
    6. Like all the years before that we have witnessed video of these stampedes, yet you do the same things.

    1. Get police involved early.
    2. Make barricades like the ones at 6 Flags.
    3. Let in 10 customers at a time to purchase 1 item for the first 100 customers. The fire marshal would not permit 3000 people in one store at the same time.
    4. Make a “pre-door” that blocks the main door, in which you let a few people in like cattle so you can monitor their numbers.
    5. BLOCK the exit so people can’t swarm in through the out door. (that is the next catastrophe)
    6. OFFER online purchases! People will wait by their computers instead of the door.
    7. Create separate areas for people who want to buy specific things. Cameras? Back of the parking lot. Computer? Get in line B. Separate people so that they all don’t compete and swarm all over the store.
    8. COVER UP the windows and main entrance so that people don’t surge when the doors open or the lights go on.

What we have developed is a group of people grown from birth with a sense of entitlement. Welfare, jobs, health care, college, or anything they want, the government feeds their selfishness. They trample someone? Oh well, I NEED A NEW CAMERA! Cheat on their boyfriend or girlfriend, doesn’t matter, what I NEED is important, I am entitled.

  19. brad says:

Here is where you could have bought a $70 8 megapixel digital camera ONLINE, and didn’t have to get up early, wait in the cold, oh yeah, and NOT kill somebody over it.

    (stupid animals!)

  20. curvyred says:

My dear son worked for a big box retailer, and they handled the Black Friday sales very professionally:

They even provided the people in line with coffee, and snacks.

They had the employees go thru the lines before the store was open and handed out tickets based on line order and item wanted. They knew exactly how many of each item they had on hand and the only way the customer could purchase the item was with the ticket.

When the doors opened there was no bum rush for the special items. And the people would know before hand whether or not they would get the items = I wish all stores did this, would save a lot of confusion and violence, judged on what happened today.

  21. bobbys says:

i worked for years to get ahead and never even had a pac man, My guess is they were waiting to buy X boxes and video games cheap, Now they get to have a say on MY capital gains tax, But i could be wrong maybe they were lined up to buy baby food and clothes for there kids, i feel so sorry for the fellow that was killed and his family, Imagine thinking your son or husband was killed over getting a video game cheap, wheres the MSM??, They need to be getting the paperwork of everyone that bought something that morn. O i forgot there in Alaska trying to dig up something on Sarah Palin or looking up Joe the plumbers back taxes.

  22. ptat says:

What did the Obama voter say to his child on Kwanza morning?
“You better appreciate that Obama doll—I had to trample someone to death to get it!”

  23. BillK says:

At every other Wal-Mart in the United States, the gathered crowds walked in sanely and responsibly when the doors were opened and the crowds managed not to kill anyone.

    Go figure.

  24. proreason says:

    Let me get this straight.

Store has sale. Barbarian shoppers trample and kill themselves to save a buck. Store is responsible because they didn’t protect the barbarians from themselves.

I think I’m going to get in line at a Walmart, catch a cold, and sue for millions.

  25. sheehanjihad says:

Oh, the things I could say about this travesty….but wont.

  26. Chinnubie says:

I think Gila has hit the nail on the head! I don’t think there’ll be a need for the flack jacket because we had this figured out from the start. At least one women had described the crowd as ANIMALS was being honest but I’m sure we won’t get that as a headline in the Times: ANIMALS KILL AT WALMART!!!! Then pictures of the scene right before they opened similar to the ones on this site. That wouldn’t be racism would it????

  27. curvyred says:

No Chinnubie, that would be reality.

They were heard laughing and carrying on AFTER THE MAN WAS TRAMPLED TO DEATH – animal seems to be quite fitting for what took place there. Uncivilized mob would also apply.

  28. 1sttofight says:

There is an upside to this. Unlike the New Orleans Walmart, apparently most of the stuff was actually paid for when it left the store.

  29. RightWinger says:

I heard on the local news this morning that one witness said as it got closer to “opening” time, people started jumping line and massing on the door. As was mentioned earlier, nothing short of the National Guard lined up with guns and dogs would have been able to contain that.

They are saying today they want to find people from the surveillance tapes and make some arrests, but that is going to be difficult. First off, the police should have locked down the store as a crime scene and everybody inside should have been matched against the video tape for their role. Those that matched the first wave trampling the victims should have had the cuffs slapped on them and sent to jail.

Much like how they caught a guy throwing a snowball at Giants stadium during a football game some years ago, the police need to publish the pictures of everybody from the Surveillance tapes in all the local papers. Offer big $$$$ rewards for information. They will get enough arrests from friends turning in friends to collect the loot.

  30. 1sttofight says:

Offer big $$$$ rewards for information.

Offer a 52 inch HDTV, a couple of pairs of Nikes, a case of MD 20/20 and they will turn in their mama.

  31. DEZ says:

They are also reporting the woman that was trampled did not lose her unborn child.
    Thank God for that much.

  32. Liberals Demise says:

The pictures tell the true story behind the story……”BLACK” Friday!!

  33. brad says:

Here is the cell phone video of the paramedics working on that guy. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f55_1227894806
    (hear observers laughing?)
I still think the store is partly responsible for the chaos. A guy making $8/hr didn’t carelessly step on a nail or something while working—-he DIED….at Wal*Mart. When you die on the job, there has to be some compensation to the victim’s family.

Just like other mobs of idiots rushing into a concert or some other venue, they are responsible for the damage. BUT Wal*Mart hasn’t learned anything from past history, and should either: 1. Take responsibility for crowd control or 2. Pay someone else to do it. I feel bad for companies like this, but when someone dies on their property, they are partly liable I think but how can a company be two steps ahead of every worst case scenario performed by people with a 70 I.Q.? I don’t know.

It’s too bad the mob is too stupid to control themselves. Anyone who has ever lived in or around this “community” knows this is the LEAST of their obnoxious behaviors. . . .

  34. brad says:

Read the article, I was right, and the next of kin sued walmart:

“created an atmosphere of competition and anxiety”

“engaged in specific marketing and advertising techniques to specifically attract a large crowd and create an environment of frenzy and mayhem and was otherwise careless, reckless and negligent.”

….the Wal-Mart store about 20 miles east of Manhattan lacked adequate security to handle the crowds.

UGH! I am surprised that when you whip a crowd into a frenzy, more people don’t die. What if a band member got all his fans hyped up, and told them to go outside and get free tickets to the next concert? 20 people get trampled. Yell fire in a crowded theatre, 2 people get trampled. Remember Willy Wonka? Had any kids gotten killed rushing stores looking for golden tickets, some heads would roll. . .

  35. DEZ says:

Not really, the same was predicted by many members here.
