WP: Obama’s Budget Is ‘End Of Era Or Austerity’

From an utterly shameless Washington Post:

With 2015 budget request, Obama will call for an end to era of austerity

By Zachary A. Goldfarb | February 20, 2014

President Obama’s forthcoming budget request will seek tens of billions of dollars in fresh spending for domestic priorities while abandoning a compromise proposal to tame the national debt in part by trimming Social Security benefits.

So much for compromise. Of course, in reality this is exactly what Obama has done in all of his previous budgets. Which is one reason why they never get any votes. Not even from Democrats.

With the 2015 budget request, Obama will call for an end to the era of austerity that has dogged much of his presidency and to his efforts to find common ground with Republicans.

Huh? When did we have an ‘era of austerity’? And how has it dogged his Presidency? Didn’t he ram through the largest most costly new entitlement in the nation’s history?

For the record, during Obama’s four fiscal years as President the federal spending-to-GDP ratio has averaged around 25 percent. During President Reagan’s years the average was 22 percent. And, in fact, each of Obama’s annual deficits has been larger than any since the 1940s. This is an era of austerity?

And, thanks to Obama-Care and doing nothing about entitlements, the government spending to debt ratio is projected to skyrocket in the future.

Instead, the president will focus on pumping new cash into job training, early-childhood education and other programs aimed at bolstering the middle class, providing Democrats with a policy blueprint heading into the midterm elections…

None of this is new. It is just his usual effort to funnel more money to the unions, especially the teachers unions and the SEIU. And it will only hurt the middle class, who will have to pay for it via their taxes.

The plan will propose $56B in new spending on domestic and defense priorities and drop a proposal that was included in last year’s budget as a way to attract GOP support…

Translation: Obama’s budget drops the sequester, which was his idea originally. (Only because the thought the GOP would never go along with gutting the military.)

As part of that strategy, Obama will jettison the framework he unveiled last year for a so-called grand bargain that would have raised taxes on the rich and reined in skyrocketing retirement spending. A centerpiece of that framework was a proposal — demanded by GOP leaders — to use a less-generous measure of inflation to calculate Social Security benefits…

Which nobody ever believed Obama would do, anyway. (Even though, in reality, it’s penny ante anyway, since the COLA increases tend to be minuscule at best.)

Republicans said emerging details of the president’s budget prove he was never serious about addressing the nation’s long-term debt problems…

Are they just now figuring this out?

Austerity?! The greatest annual federal expenditures in the history of the US have all come under nerobama’s time in office, as have the greatest annual deficits.

  2. I’m gonna need to get me some austerity soon

Instead, the president will focus on pumping new cash into…”early-childhood education”.

All the federal stimulus money to schools who began “required volunteer work for grades classes”, “required leadership classes”, “environmental science classes (making art out of junk)
and government classes taught by the NYT’s and CNN news.

So, I’m guessing “early-childhood” will be the elementary school age, since he doesn’t mention the “cradle age” education he promised.

By the end of this term people will really notice students are graduating from high school with no education, so it will lead the way for the next liberal president to get elected.

They will probably lower the age to vote at that.
