WP: Poll Ranking Obama Worst President Near-Sighted

First we have this from Reuters:

U.S. poll: more voters see Obama as worst president in modern times

By Susan Heavey | July 2, 2014

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Two years into President Barack Obama’s second term, more voters say they are dissatisfied with his administration’s handling of everything from the economy to foreign policy, giving him the worst marks of any modern U.S. president, a poll on Wednesday said.

In a survey of 1,446 registered voters, 33 percent said Obama was the worst president since World War Two, while 28 percent pointed to his predecessor, George W. Bush, as the worst, the poll by Quinnipiac University found.

Voters were split over which of the two most recent presidents has done a better job with 39 percent saying Obama has been a better president than Bush and, 40 percent saying Obama is worse. Most voters said Ronald Reagan, who served two terms in the 1980s, was the best president since 1945, the survey showed.

"Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of Quinnipiac University’s polling unit…

Er, no. Mr. Obama is at the bottom, not Bush. (33% to 28%.)

But don’t worry. The Washington Post has already ridden to Obama’s rescue:

Either Obama is the worst president since World War II, or Americans just have really short memories

By Aaron Blake | July 2, 2014

The big political news of the day is the Quinnipiac poll that shows 33 percent of Americans say President Obama is the worst president since World War II — the most of any president who served over that span.

The poll demonstrates Obama’s problems — which are many — but it probably says more the American people and their nearsightedness.

As our own Philip Bump noted, the last time Quinnipiac asked the same question, in 2006, the American people also chose the current president, then George W. Bush…

Well? We don’t recall anyone in the news media doubting that result.

Here’s are similar polls from Gallup in 1999 and 2000. Guess who just happened to place second? The guy who was in the White House! Bill Clinton even got more votes than Jimmy Carter…

Again, why is that surprising?

Richard Nixon was the worst president to 23 percent of Americans in 1998, he’s now the worst to just 13 percent…

Even Bush has dropped six points between 2006 and 2014. And we’d wager that he’ll drop further in the years ahead. None of this is to say Obama will one day be loved or that this poll shouldn’t be at least somewhat distressing for a guy who is concerned about his legacy.

But if he’s really stressing over this poll, he can take some solace in knowing that the passage of time will almost undoubtedly knock him down this dubious list.

Thank Allah!
