Obama’s ex-pastor cancels speeches
HOUSTON - The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, presidential candidate Barack Obama’s controversial former pastor, has canceled plans to speak at three services at a Houston church on Sunday, the church’s pastor said.
The Rev. Marcus Cosby, pastor at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, told Houston television station KTRK and the Houston Chronicle that safety concerns had prompted Wright’s decision.
Cosby told the Chronicle that Wright cited three reasons for canceling: "the safety of the institution to which he has been invited; the safety of his family, which has been placed in harm’s way; and for his own safety."
Wright also canceled his appearance Tuesday in Florida at a Tampa-area church. The hosting church said it asked Wright to cancel his scheduled three-day appearance because of security questions.
Wright had been expected to be in North Texas over the weekend to be honored by the Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, but it was unclear whether he would still be attending.
"His schedule is pending," Joan Harrell, minister of communications for Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where Wright was pastor for nearly four decades, told The Dallas Morning News for its Tuesday online editions…
Videos of remarks Wright has made have been circulating widely on the Internet and news programs. Wright’s sermons to his predominantly black congregation have included him shouting "God damn America" for its treatment of minorities. He has said the U.S. government invented AIDS to destroy "people of color" and has also suggested that U.S. policies in the Middle East and elsewhere were partly responsible for the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
"I think we have taken Dr. Wright out of context with sound bites," Cosby said. "After all these years, I am not going to kick him to the curb over sound bites."
In North Texas over the weekend, Wright is supposed to speak at a Saturday luncheon at Paul Quinn College in Oak Cliff and be honored that night at Friendship-West Baptist Church in the Red Bird area.
Frederick Haynes III, pastor of Friendship-West Baptist, said Tuesday night that the Dallas events are "all systems go," but he acknowledged that security issues could keep Wright away.
"We’re going to honor him," he said. "The question is, basically, regarding his presence."
And by "safety" they mean safety for Mr. Obama’s campaign.
But yes, by all means honor him. Keep him front and center in the news.

Exactly SG.

Obama’s liberal church under the microscope
RELIGION | Presidential candidate to speak at group’s convention

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama belongs to the United Church of Christ, one of the country’s most racially diverse and liberal Protestant denominations — the first to ordain an openly gay minister and to call for equal marriage rights for all people, regardless of gender.
The UCC prides itself as being “out front” on social justice issues, battling civil rights, women’s rights and gay rights ahead of the mainstream. One Sunday hymnal equally celebrates male and female images of God.
(b)And earlier this month, the UCC took a stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that the Anti-Defamation League rebuked as “unfair and one-sided.”(/b)
(b)UCC officials said Obama’s invitation isn’t a political endorsement.(/b) They’re expecting the highest turnout ever for a convention– an estimated 11,000 people — but they say that’s because the denomination is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
“We are definitely proud the senator is a member,” said the Rev. Jane Fisler Hoffman, head of the UCC’s Illinois Conference. “It will be important for church folks to hear a politician speak about his faith and how that informs his work in politics.”
[...]
Obama and his wife, Michelle, are members of Trinity United Church of Christ, a South Side church led by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., (b)who teaches members about their African heritage and preaches a theology of black liberation.(/b)
(b)Conservative pundits say the church espouses white racism. But Obama and Wright say black empowerment doesn’t mean white inferiority.(/b)
“For Trinity, being unashamedly black does not mean being anti-white,” church historian Martin Marty said in a recent writing.
Because Wright is officiating at a wedding Saturday, he won’t be on hand in Hartford to hear Obama. But at a recent church conference in Virginia, Obama singled Wright out in the audience for introducing him ”to someone incredible, Jesus Christ.”

The information was out there but the leftie MSM has been protecting him all along. He was never vetted - they have no commitment to the people - just their own agenda. Obama keeps saying Wright led him to Jesus Christ (which is why he can’t throw him under the bus with his grandmother) but he tells some people he was always a Christian. I can’t figure that one out. Some other remarks he’s made also don’t make sense either - like - he was talking about Jesus ‘was’ and not ‘IS’… He’s a puzzle but the pieces are coming together thanks to your blog SG and others…T.G. for the net.

Maybe he has had to cancel talks due to the lack of taste in hats. His hat sucks, that alone would be enough to keep me from his talks. Besides, who wants to hear some bloated fellow feeding his wallet based on hatred and anger? He, just like the dimocrats, have an angry base that’s necessary to keep stirred up in order to create and maintain voting blocks. Knowing that, his hat still sucks, along with those boots and country club pants. What’s with the manbag?

I’ll tell you what gets me. Texas Christian University is suppose to honor this racist pig. I lived in Fort Worth for 4 years and it didn’t stike me as a liberal town. Academia aside, that’s really as strange as all get out. ( A little Texas lingo there)

My mom still says that.
March 27th, 2008 at 1:17 am
I think I would like your mom, Cherish her.
Mom also used to say, Get me a switch off the apple tree!
Man I hated that damn tree.
March 27th, 2008 at 1:24 am
I do. She’s 78 now and I take care of her. Sharp as a tack and knows more about politics and world affairs than all her buddies…by far.
I know what you mean about the tree. Our neighbor had a weeping willow tree. When I was 35 he cut that tree down. Me and my neighborhood buds stood around and drank beer to it’s demise. That some bitch scarred me many times. I deserved it though…..LOL!
March 27th, 2008 at 1:43 am
Your a good man, Your mom raised you well, welts and all, lol
I hated and miss that old apple tree all at the same time, They branches make a great switch, But,
Take one about 3 eighths in diameter about four foot long and stab an apple on the end about the size of a golf ball, and whip it right you can send an apple a hundred yards very easy.
A few windows and the switch became moms whip.

Thankis DEZ. I’ll tell mom you think so. She’s a tough ole bird and doesn’t take any crap. I just can’t stop her from watching CNN all day so I balance it with the truth as I read it here. I even made her listen to Rush with me last year after she said he was mean and hated women. I said, “Mom, have you ever heard him?” and she, of course, said no. One three hour session later and she thinks he’s the smartest man on Earth. She’s come a long way from a FDR lib.
Never seen the apple whip. I’m glad I didn’t know that 40 years ago. I’d have more scars.

DEZ…..I used to take an old fishing pole, the cheap Zebco….remove the tip, scrape it on the driveway to get a point on it….then shove a golf ball sized greenie in it and whip it an easy 200 yards…..usually less….but it was an art form. We had an apple tree, AND a weeping willow….both were great for switches…..but my mom would always say…..go get a two by four out of the garage….man, I hated that garage.
