A few days after the election on what was the local talk radio show Chris Plante (since fired so they could put in Starbucks Joe & his Clown Car sidekick Mikkie Mouse show) some woman who always called in who was black and named Teresa was saying that whites will never get any special privileges once they're in the minority as they need to know what it feels like to be a minority. I about crawled through my radio and wanted to wring her neck. Sad thing is though, I have many liberal relatives (remember I just spent 6 hours with these folks a few weeks ago & they yapped about the wonders of the Dear Leader) who feel the same way. When I remind them an Hispanic person I taught with got into Northwestern University School of Law with worse grades and LSAT scores than myself they said "she deserved it because she had been discriminated against". Nonsense, this woman's mother had been in the Navy, stationed in Rota and married a Spanish man she met while touring a Bodega.
It's crazy.

How are Hispanics racially different from Arabs, Italians, Spaniards, or Greeks?

You're right. They're not. The differences are primarily cultural, not anthropological.

If any ever watched the movie "Gladiator", this point is very well made, though subtly. Maximus has a Roman name, Roman manners, Roman religion but Spanish heritage and culture.

Much of what people refer to as "racism" is actually resistance to change based on their own established norm. We have Cinco De Mayo celebrated in many parts of the country as well as St Patrick's Day, even May Day in some places. And, for the record, being Irish in Chicago in 1900 was ten times worse than being black there.

Every nation, every civilization throughout history has had its prejudices and "hate crimes". However, rather than letting some things take their course, this nation has embarked upon a very slippery path to fix the inequities by making more specific and discriminatory laws rather than enforce the already satisfactory laws, all in the name of "doing something special and unique" when none in called for. Uh, except by those who feel particularly persecuted.

This slippery path has thus led us to where we are now with everyone wanting special recognition for the least little thing: Marvin Johnson, first African American to_____________. Insert special noteworthy event here.

Trouble is, liberals misinterpret "equal" as meaning "unique" or "special".

Morgan Freeman so astutely states, "You wanna stop racism? Stop talkin' about it"

The obvious point being that in many respects, whites and blacks are acutely aware of the unfair past in this nation, but...in large numbers, they are also making effort every day, with certain exception (Jackson, Sharpton, etc) to be courteous and treat each other as they would like to be treated.

However, when the angers that lie just beneath the surface are aroused, then the heated arguments start all over again, to no avail and no advantage to either side...at least in a moral sense.

Unfortunately, we do have those in the Anglo-based population that are "oh-so-sorry" that they are white and that their ancestors did such horrible things. Thus we get the illogical and inappropriate notion that all Americans must repair that which was done wrong while many others, many blacks included, recognize that the field was, in fact levelled over time and if they just go out there and take advantage of the great land called the United States, that opportunity and ability to succeed are definitely available.

Unfortunately, many of the white apologists and angry blacks have not had the opportunity to go elsewhere in the world and see the oppression a nation can impose on its citizenry. I think that the younger generation going to the middle east for some time will have an interesting effect over time. I think that the things they have seen will definitely influence them in seeing that the United States has more to offer than they may have even realized.

A slight correction...about the playing field. In fact, it has been tilted in the favor of minorities. IN jobs, in education and so forth, based pretty much on both the pushing by minority activists and by guilt-ridden white administrators.

Hopefully, as the years progress, that will be less of an issue. I really do hope so.

I've never understood what difference being black, Hispanic or white or any other race has on anything.

Why even have the "race box" on apps and forms? (rhetorical..I know the political reason).

It shouldn't even be there. Judge me on my qualifications...end of sentence. Of course that is common sense and there is no "precedent" (As Sotomyor would like to use) for common sense.

I think the projections are a logical paradox, though. By the 2040s, many people counted as "hispanic" will consider themselves white or at least as non-minorities, and many of them will have white non-Hispanic parents as well as Hispanic ancestors (the great thing about miscegenation -- we all got equally mixed up). So when this milestone is passed, the significance of "white" will have changed, and that's a good thing, since it never made sense as a category anyway.
