Jobless Rate Dropped For Foreign-Born Workers In 2014 http://sweetness-light.com/archive/jobless-rate-dropped-for-foreign-born-workers-in-2014 http://sweetness-light.com/archive/jobless-rate-dropped-for-foreign-born-workers-in-2014#comments Fri, 22 May 2015 15:26:07 +0000 http://sweetness-light.com/?p=45587 What great news! The unemployment rate is down! For foreign workers, that is.

From the a cheering Wall Street Journal:

The Unemployment Rate Dropped for Foreign-Born Workers in 2014

By David Harrison | May 21, 2015

The unemployment rate for foreign-born workers in the U.S. fell to 5.6% in 2014 from 6.9% in 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday, reflecting the overall firming up of the labor market last year. The unemployment rate for the native-born fell to 6.3% last year from 7.5% in 2013.

And here we had the impression it was illegal for most foreigners to work in the US, at least until Obama gives them a work permit. Guess we were mistaken.

Since 2009, when the national unemployment rate peaked, joblessness among foreign-born workers has fallen by 4.1 percentage points.

Obama’s trade bill narrowly clears a key Senate hurdle

By DAVID ESPO and CHARLES BABINGTON | May 21, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a triumph for President Barack Obama, sweeping legislation to strengthen the administration’s hand in global trade talks advanced toward Senate passage Thursday after a showdown vote that remained in doubt until the final moment. The 62-38 vote, two more than the 60 needed, came from a solid phalanx of Republicans and more than a dozen Democrats. But the decisive thumbs-up came — literally, and long past the allotted time — from Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington after she and a few others seized the moment as leverage to demand a vote next month on legislation to renew the Export-Import Bank…

Democrats are always so good at extortion.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Discusses Violence Spike In City

By Christie Lleto | May 20, 2015

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — In the midst of crime scenes, police say it’s harder to do their jobs. Wednesday, the city’s frustrated top cop says officers are being confronted by large groups and cell phone cameras in the wake of the Freddie Gray case…

“It makes it very difficult for us to follow up on violence that takes place there. When you have 50 or 60 people there, it makes it difficult to get eyewitnesses,” said Police Commissioner Anthony Batts. “It makes it difficult to get information that’s out there.”

Residents are quick to document after Freddie Gray’s April arrest, highlighting chronic distrust of police.

Baltimore officers indicted for the death of Freddie Gray

By Zach Winslett | May 21, 2015

(RNN) – All six Baltimore police officers charged for the death of Freddie Gray have been indicted by a grand jury.

Huh. It looks like Ms. Mosby decided she needed some extra cover.

Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced upgraded charges for the six people indicted in relation to the death of Freddie Gray. Additionally, the state attorney said the charges to the officers – previously imposed on May 1 – have been modified to better reflect her office’s investigation… Mosby did not not take questions after the announcement.

From the Washington Post:

Clinton Foundation reveals up to $26 million in additional payments

By Rosalind S. Helderman and Tom Hamburger | May 21, 2015

The Clinton Foundation reported Thursday that it has received as much as $26.4 million in previously undisclosed payments from major corporations, universities, foreign sources and other groups. The disclosure came as the foundation faced questions over whether it fully complied with a 2008 ethics agreement to reveal its donors…

The money was paid as fees for speeches by Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.

Little Chelsea was also raking in speaking fees? We thought she said she had tried to get interested in money, but found that she couldn’t.

The bizarrely slow process of releasing Hillary Clinton’s e-mails, explained

By Kevin Schaul | May 20, 2015

When Hillary Clinton handed over 30,000 e-mails to the State Department, she did so in a very 20th-century way: She had them all printed out.

Apparently, the WP just stumbled across this news.

That decision — combined with the fact the some but not all of the pages were double-sided — meant the State Department had to spend five weeks of time re-digitizing the documents, according to a court filing released by the department Monday…

Which will introduce all kinds of handy errors.

Archives officials worried about preserving Hillary’s records

Clinton e-mails reveal slain ambassador considered leaving Libya

By Marisa Schultz | May 22, 2015

WASHINGTON — Eighteen months before his murder in the 2012 Benghazi attack, US Ambassador Christopher Stevens was so worried about security in Libya that he was considering leaving the country, according to newly released Hillary Rodham Clinton e-mails.

An e-mail sent to the then-secretary of state’s private account with “high” importance described the shelling and snipers surrounding Stevens, who was then serving as special envoy.

“The situation in [the Libyan town of] Ajdabiyah has worsened to the point where Stevens is considering departure from Benghazi,” said an April 10, 2011, e-mail obtained Thursday by The New York Times.

A Closer Look at Hillary Clinton’s Emails on Benghazi

In response to a request from Mrs. Clinton [sic!], the State Department plans to release [roughly 850 pages of Hillary emails that relate to Libya and the Benghazi attacks] in the coming days.

The New York Times obtained more than a third of those documents and has provided a guide to some of the key findings related to the Benghazi attacks below…

Who gave the NYT these emails and the ‘guidance’? Marie Harf insists they did not come from the State Department.

Michael Brown memorial to be replaced with plaque

By Jack Suntrup | May 20, 2015

FERGUSON — The memorial to Michael Brown on Canfield Drive has been removed and will be replaced by a plaque, Mayor James Knowles III and Michael Brown Sr. announced Wednesday…

Courtesy of the city of Ferguson, which was nearly destroyed by Mr. Brown’s grieving supporters. By the way, the plaque shows Brown in his HS graduation cap. Since he is best known for being a scholar.

Flanked by newly elected Ferguson City Council members Wesley Bell and Ella Jones, Knowles and Brown said the plaque will be part of a new permanent memorial in the area…

40 percent of unemployed have quit looking for jobs

By Jeff Cox | May 20, 2015

At a time when 8.5 million Americans still don’t have jobs, some 40 percent have given up even looking…

A tight jobs market… and a benefits program [sic] that, while curtailed from its recession level, still remains obliging have combined to keep workers on the sidelines, according to a Harris poll of 1,553 working-age Americans conducted for Express Employment Professionals.

Overall, nearly 1 in 5 (19 percent) said they spent no time looking for work in the week previous to the survey. Just 10 percent said they spent more than 31 hours looking… Unemployment compensation also matters.

Rising inequality holding back economic growth, report warns

By GREG KELLER | May 21, 2015

PARIS (AP) — The widening gap between haves and have-nots in much of the developed world not only raises concerns about the fraying social fabric — it’s also dramatically holding back economic growth, according to a new global study. Far from a rising tide lifting all ships, income inequality increases in good economic times as well as bad, Thursday’s report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says.

For the record, the OECD originated in 1948 to help administer the Marshall Plan.

Iowa Democrats: Flawed Hillary Clinton Our Best Hope to Win

By Margaret Talev | May 20, 2015

A focus group of 10 Democrats—five women and five men—assembled this week in Des Moines by Bloomberg Politics and Washington-based Purple Strategies was mostly willing to look past Clinton’s paid speeches, her Wall Street ties, the controversy over her use of private e-mail while secretary of state…

Despite her perceived flaws, the group’s participants indicated that they believed Clinton represents the Democrats’ only hope of holding on to the White House. Participants repeatedly praised Clinton’s experience, especially on foreign policy, though none was able to name any of her accomplishments as the nation’s top diplomat…
