SEIU Poll: GOP Risks Backlash If SCOTUS Strikes Subsidies

From CNBC:

GOP risks political backlash from Obamacare case: Poll

Dan Mangan | March 2, 2015

It might be a bittersweet victory for Republican leaders if the Supreme Court rules the way their party wants it to in a huge legal challenge to Obamacare that threatens financial aid to people in two-thirds of the United States, a new poll suggests.

The survey, commissioned by a major labor union that supports Obamacare, shows that even as the Affordable Care Act continues to be viewed unfavorably by many people, a majority of them would strongly disapprove of eliminating federal tax credits that help more than 6 million customers pay their insurance premiums.

Hilarious. Even the SEIU has to admit that most people still don’t like Obama-Care.

IRS Confirms Amnesty Bonus, Grassley Is Working Stop It

From Breitbart:

IRS Again Confirms Amnesty Bonus, Grassley Working On Bill To Address

By Caroline May | March 2, 2015

The Internal Revenue Service is reiterating that illegal immigrants granted Social Security numbers and work permits as a result of President Obama’s executive amnesty would be eligible to claim tax credits for up to three prior tax years for work they did illegally.

In a recent letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), IRS Commissioner John Koskinen refers to a hearing last month during which the Iowa Republican pressed the commissioner about the tax implications for those illegal immigrants granted amnesty.

“[We] have reviewed the relevant statutes and legislative history, and we believe that the 2000 [Chief Counsel advice] is correct,” Koskinen wrote. “The CCA concludes that a taxpayer may claim the earned income tax credit (EITC) for a taxable year using a social security number (SSN) acquired in a later taxable year.”

A recent Congressional Research Service report found that in the first year of amnesty, an amnesty beneficiary could potentially claim more than $35,000 in EITC and Child Tax Credits…

“Given the IRS’ interpretation of tax rules intended to prohibit undocumented workers from qualifying for the EITC, these individuals will be eligible to claim billions of dollars in tax benefits based on earnings from unauthorized work in the United States,” Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, responded Monday.

WH Defends AR-15 Ammunition Ban As ‘Common Sense’

From Breitbart:

White House Defends ‘Common Sense’ AR-15 Ammunition Ban: ‘Everyone Should Agree’

By Charlie Spiering | March 2, 2015

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest is defending a proposal by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to ban AR-15 ammunition. Earnest calls it a “common sense” approach. “This seems to be an area where everyone should agree, that if there are armor piercing bullets available that can fit into easily concealed weapons, that it puts our law enforcement at considerable more risk,” Earnest explained when questioned about the ban by White House reporter Fred Lucas…

Republican lawmakers have opposed the ban, submitting a letter to ATF director B. Todd Jones. “Millions upon millions of M855 rounds have been sold and used in the U.S., yet the ATF has not even alleged, much less offered evidence, that even one such round has ever been fired from a handgun at a police officer,” the letter reads.

AP: DHS Funding On Track – Minus Amnesty Amendments

From a cheering Associated Press:

Homeland funding appears on track minus immigration add-ons

By DAVID ESPO | March 3, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — After a weeks-long political struggle, legislation to fund the Homeland Security Department is headed back to the House without restrictions conservatives demanded on President Barack Obama’s immigration policies. Even so, it stands a good chance of passage.

Speaker John Boehner and other House GOP leaders declined Monday night to say what their next move would be in a controversy that has exposed deep divisions inside the party’s ranks. But even Republican officials conceded the leadership was running out of options apart from a capitulation to Obama and the Democrats…

The Republican leadership have at least three options, if they would simply have the courage to use them.

Hillary Used Email Domain That Was Hacked By ‘Guccifer’

From the Washington Post, of all places:

Hacked emails indicate that Hillary Clinton used a domain registered the day of her Senate hearings

By Philip Bump | March 2, 2015

The New York Times reported Monday night that, during her tenure at the State Department, Hillary Clinton never used her official email account to conduct communications, relying instead on a private email account.

As the Times notes, only official accounts are automatically retained under the Federal Records Act, meaning that none of Clinton’s email communication was preserved.

In March 2013, an adviser to Clinton, Sidney Blumenthal, had his email hacked by "Guccifer" — the Romanian hacker perhaps best known for revealing George W. Bush’s paintings to the world.

At the time, Gawker reported that Blumenthal was communicating with an account that appeared to belong to Clinton at the "" domain.

Hillary Used Personal Email At State, Breaking Regulations

From the New York Times:

Hillary Clinton Used Personal Email Account at State Dept., Possibly Breaking Rules

By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT | March 2, 2015

WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton exclusively used a personal email account to conduct government business as secretary of state, State Department officials said, and may have violated federal requirements that officials’ correspondence be retained as part of the agency’s record. Mrs. Clinton did not have a government email address during her four-year tenure at the State Department. Her aides took no actions to have her personal emails preserved on department servers at the time, as required by the Federal Records Act.

At the risk of being too fair to Hillary, we are not sure that she broke any federal laws — just federal regulations.

Boehner To Give Bibi Churchill Bust, Dem ‘Boycott’ Grows

From a memory deficient Associated Press:

US House leader to give Israeli leader bust of Churchill

March 2, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner plans to give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a bust of Winston Churchill when he speaks Tuesday to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress about the danger of a nuclear-armed Iran.

The gift was chosen because Netanyahu and the former prime minister of Britain are the only foreign leaders who have addressed Congress three separate times…

Something tells us that this isn’t the only reason Mr. Boehner chose this gift. Lest we forget, one of Obama’s first actions upon taking office was to send a bust of Churchill that had resided in the Oval Office back to the UK.

Obama Confirms 10 Yr Deal, Says Netanyahu Wrong Before

From Reuters:

Exclusive: Obama says Iran must halt key nuclear work for at least a decade

By Jeff Mason | March 2, 2015

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Iran must commit to a verifiable freeze of at least 10 years on sensitive nuclear activity for a landmark atomic deal to be reached, but the odds are still against sealing a final agreement, U.S. President Barack Obama told Reuters on Monday.

So if the odds are against this deal ever happening, why have we put our relationship with Israel at risk defending it? And why have we lifted any and all the sanctions on Iran and unfrozen their $12 billion dollars worth of assets in the US?

Interviewed at the White House, Obama moved to dial back tensions over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned speech to Congress on Tuesday opposing the Iran deal, saying it was a distraction that would not be "permanently destructive" to U.S.

Boko Haram Release ISIS-Like Video, ISIS Is Now In Libya

From Reuters:

Nigeria’s Boko Haram releases beheading video echoing Islamic State

By Isaac Abrak | March 3, 2015

ABUJA (Reuters) – Nigeria’s Islamist sect [sic!] Boko Haram released a video purporting to show it beheading two men, its first online posting using advanced graphics and editing techniques reminiscent of footage from Islamic State. The film, released on Monday, shows militants standing behind the two men who are on their knees, their hands tied behind their backs, with one man standing over them, holding a knife. One of the men is made to tell the camera that they had been paid by authorities to spy on the militant group, before the film moves to another scene showing their decapitated bodies…

Boko Haram is answering the Obamas’ hashtag campaign with their own slashtag campaign.

LAT: LAPD Shoot Unarmed Homeless Black Man To Death

From a very hopeful Los Angeles Times:

LAPD fatal shooting of man caught on tape

By Gale Holland, Jack Dolan and Kate Mather | March 1, 2015

Authorities said Sunday night that Los Angeles police fatally shot a man on skid row during a struggle over an officer’s weapons. Police officials offered a detailed account of what they say prompted the Sunday morning shooting, which was captured on video by a bystander.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith said officers assigned to the LAPD’s Central Division and Safer Cities Initiative — a task force focused on skid row — responded to the location about noon Sunday after receiving a 911 call reporting a possible robbery.

As we now know, being a robbery suspect is no cause for the police to shoot you, under any circumstances.

NYT: DOJ Will Find Racial Bias In Ferguson PD Traffic Stops

From a cheering New York Times:

Justice Department to Fault Ferguson Police, Seeing Racial Bias in Traffic Stops

By MATT APUZZO | March 1, 2015

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has nearly completed a highly critical report accusing the police in Ferguson, Mo., of making discriminatory traffic stops of African-Americans that created years of racial animosity leading up to an officer’s shooting of a black teenager last summer, law enforcement officials said.

Gee, who could have predicted such a thing? And never mind that the Obama/Holder Department of (Social) Justice has already used this same tactic against more than a dozen police departments. Including those in Newark, Las Vegas and Oakland. Cities that are run by liberal Democrats. (Despite Las Vegas’ Mayor Goodman claiming to be an ‘Independent.’)

According to several officials who have been briefed on the report’s conclusions, the report criticizes the city for disproportionately ticketing and arresting African-Americans and relying on the fines to balance the city’s budget.

GOP Senators Pledge Help If Court Bars O-Care Subsidies

From the Associated Press:

GOP senators pledge help if court bars health law subsidies

By ALAN FRAM | March 1, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three leading Republican senators are promising to help millions of people who may lose federal health insurance subsidies if the Supreme Court invalidates a pillar of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

But in a Washington Post opinion article posted online late Sunday, GOP Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, John Barrasso of Wyoming and Orrin Hatch of Utah provide no detail on how much assistance they would propose, its duration or how they would pay for it. Nor do they address how they would overcome GOP divisions or Democratic opposition to weakening the law.

Sens. Alexander, Barrasso and Hatch. Sheesh.

The article appeared days before Wednesday’s oral arguments in a case brought by conservatives and Republicans that could upend the functioning of the 2010 health care law by invalidating the subsidies that help millions afford required health coverage.

McCarthy: Use Nuclear Option On Senate DHS Funding Bill

From The Hill:

House GOP leader: Senate should change its rules to pass DHS funding

By Jesse Byrnes | March 1, 2015

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on Sunday that the Senate should change its rules in order to pass a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

"I think they should change the rule," McCarthy said on NBC’s "Meet the Press," suggesting the Senate invoke the so-called "nuclear option" to allow spending bills to only require a simple majority to advance instead of 60 votes…

The Senate could do that. (As we have been suggesting for months.) Or, the House could amend the Senate’s DHS funding bill to remove funding for Obama’s illegal actions (work permits, Social Security numbers). And then the Republicans in the Senate could pass the House bill via ‘budget reconciliation,’ which only requires a simple majority.

After Injunction, ICE Is Letting Illegal Aliens Free On Bond

From a quietly rejoicing Associated Press:

Lawyers: Detained immigrant families in Texas offered bonds

By JAMIE STENGLE | February 27, 2015

DALLAS (AP) — Attorneys say the federal government is loosening its crackdown on offering bonds for Central American immigrant mothers and children seeking asylum in the U.S., a shift that comes after a federal judge ordered a halt to a detention strategy aimed at deterring other illegal crossings. Immigrant advocates say the effect so far has been minimal: Most families can’t afford to post bond anyway.

Lawyers say immigrants at the more than 500-bed facility in Karnes City say that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has this week been offering bonds, but many are as high as $7,500.

Gosh that’s terrible. But could it have something to do with the fact that none of these illegal aliens ever show up for their hearings?

Reid Refuses To Go To Conference With House On DHS Bill

From the Associated Press:

Homeland Security funding deal elusive

By KIMBERLY HEFLING | March 2, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a partial shutdown of the Homeland Security Department possible at week’s end, Speaker John Boehner says the House wants to enter talks with the Senate on a final bill funding the agency. Senate Democrats are not interested in joining those talks.

The Senate is holding a vote Monday on whether to proceed on the question of talks between the two chambers… House Republican leaders on Sunday demanded that Democrats begin negotiations on funding for the Homeland Security Department and President Barack Obama’s unilateral actions on immigration. But even some Republicans said the party should simply surrender and give the agency money without conditions…

The AP fails to report what is actually going on here.
